Bitcoin rises to new record high, eclipses January top

Khaleej Times21-05-2025

The price of Bitcoin rose to its highest level on record on Wednesday, eclipsing the previous high from January, as risk sentiment continues to improve after last month's tariff-induced sell-off.
The world's largest cryptocurrency touched a high of $109,481.83, a 2% gain on the day.
Bitcoin, at times, trades in a similar fashion to tech stocks and other assets that rise in value when investor sentiment is high. The tech-heavy Nasdaq is up 30% from its early April low.
That has also coincided with continued weakness in the dollar, a further boost for bitcoin's exchange rate against the U.S. currency.
Crypto market participants often point to increased involvement from traditional financial firms as reasons for its gains.
This week they have referenced JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, a long term crypto sceptic, saying its clients can buy bitcoin and crypto exchange Coinbase being added to the SP 500 this month as being contributing factors.
Coinbase said on Monday the US Department of Justice has opened a probe into a recent data breach at the company.

Oil prices steady but face volatility from US-Iran tension

Oil prices were steady on Thursday morning, after rising about 4 per cent on Wednesday amid signs of escalating tension between the US and Iran. Brent, the benchmark for two thirds of the world's oil, was down 0.39 per cent at $69.50 a barrel at 9.32am UAE time. West Texas Intermediate, the gauge that tracks US crude, was trading 0.29 per cent lower at $67.95 a barrel. Both the benchmarks rose by more than 4 per cent on Wednesday. The US State Department on Wednesday began preparing to evacuate non-essential staff from the American embassy in Baghdad amid faltering efforts between Washington and Tehran to reach a nuclear deal. The US also authorised military dependents from locations across the region to leave. 'They are being moved out because it could be a dangerous place,' US President Donald Trump said. 'We've given notice to move out and we'll see what happens. [Iran] can't have a nuclear weapon. Very simply, they can't have a nuclear weapon, we're not going to allow that.' The oil price change looks like a 'short squeeze amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East', said Giovanni Staunovo, a strategist at Swiss bank UBS. 'The decision of the US might be used as leverage in the nuclear talks, which are on this weekend,' he added. Meanwhile, crude was also boosted by the trade truce reached between the US and China this week. Officials from the US and Beijing said on Tuesday night they had agreed to a framework deal after two days of high-level talks in London. Mr Trump on Wednesday hailed the truce and said the country's relationship with China was 'excellent'. 'Our deal with China is done. Subject to final approval with President Xi [Jinping] and me,' Mr Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. The US leader added that he and Mr Xi 'will work closely together to open up China to American trade'. 'The broader market cheer from the latest thaw in US-China trade tensions may endure for the next few days at least, sustaining support for crude, especially as it comes in the backdrop of an evolving consensus expectation that the US will settle for a much lower level of 'reciprocal tariffs' with its trading partners than the levels Trump announced on April 2,' said Vandana Hari, founder of Vanda Insights. The benign US May inflation data has added to the positivity by bolstering confidence in the economy, she said. 'However, the US-Iran situation is in a major flux,' she added. 'Tensions could escalate or they could ease, prompting crude to shake off some of the supply risk premium.' Looking ahead, she expects Brent to average in the high-$60s for the second half of this year. 'While the low-$60s for Brent may be in the rear-view mirror, the overall theme for this year, framed by an economic slowdown amid US tariff tensions and Opec+ accelerating its supply boost, is intact,' she said. Mr Staunovo said volatility will stay high. 'Our end-of-June forecast for Brent is at $68 a barrel', he said.

Private market push in focus as BlackRock hosts investor day

NEW YORK: BlackRock will hold an investor day on Thursday that is expected to provide insight into the asset management firm's strategic priorities and its growing focus on private markets. The world's largest asset manager, overseeing $11.58 trillion as of the end of the first quarter, last year expanded its presence in private markets through a series of acquisitions that BlackRock's boss Larry Fink said were transformational for the New York-based firm. BlackRock spent about $25 billion in 2024 on infrastructure investment fund Global Infrastructure Partners and private credit business HPS Investment Partners. It also struck a $3.2 billion deal to acquire UK data provider Preqin. That acquisition officially closed in March this year. "I think investors are going to want more granular details and more color on BlackRock's strategy to increase exposure to alternative assets," said Cathy Seifert, an analyst at CFRA Research who covers BlackRock. BlackRock declined to comment on the focus of its investor day. Private assets generate significantly higher fees than exchange-traded funds (ETFs), a core part of BlackRock's business through its iShares franchise. In his 2025 annual chairman's letter to shareholders, BlackRock's Chairman and CEO Fink said protectionism had returned with force as a result of a wealth divide that could be countered by offering more investors access to high-return private markets such as infrastructure and private credit. Ben Budish, an analyst at Barclays, said he expected updates from the company on potentially creating indexes based on private markets after the acquisition of private markets data provider Preqin. "Looking at what BlackRock did with iShares and ETFs, is there a way to do that with private markets? … I'm sure there's more details to come on that," he said. Private credit, where non-bank institutions lend to companies, has experienced significant growth in recent years due to stricter regulations that have increased the cost for traditional banks to fund higher-risk loans. But broader market volatility caused by U.S. President Donald Trump's aggressive stance on tariffs has led to slower dealmaking in private markets in general, raising some concerns there may be a mismatch between money available for private lending and not enough places to invest it. Investors may also look for any signs regarding succession at the firm. Fink, 72, has led BlackRock since co-founding it in 1988. A recent wave of senior executive departures has reignited speculation about his eventual successor, even as Fink has signaled no immediate plan to step down. "The firm would do itself a favor by highlighting the depth and breadth of their management bench, particularly since the company's business model is expanding and potentially becoming more complex," said Seifert.
