Sam Mitchell goes public with sad new revelation about former Hawthorn teammate

Yahoo4 days ago

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell says he didn't catch up with Cyril Rioli in Darwin recently and has had very little contact with his estranged former teammate. The pair won four AFL premierships together at Hawthorn but Rioli has distanced himself from the club and many of his former teammates after making racism allegations surrounding his time at the Hawks.
The 35-year-old was conspicuously absent for Hawthorn's centenary celebrations at the MCG in May, despite dozens of his former teammates taking part. However, there were signs that Rioli was ready to start mending bridges with his former club after being spotted catching up with Hawthorn legend Luke Hodge before the Hawks' round 10 clash with the Suns in Darwin three weeks ago.
Rioli lives in Darwin but declined an invitation to attend Hawthorn's training session before the game against Gold Coast. However, his surprise appearance at the round 10 fixture between the Suns and Hawks left the AFL community pleased to see Rioli associating with Hawthorn again.
One man that didn't get the chance to catch up with Rioli though is Hawthorn coach Mitchell, who says the former Norm Smith Medallist will always be welcome back at the club that he achieved so much at. Speaking on Seven's The Agenda Setters, Mitchell acknowledged that it was a 'complicated' situation for Rioli says he's ready to catch up whenever his former teammate feels ready.
"I didn't run into him in Darwin and I haven't reached out to him of that close a nature," Mitchell said. "He knows that he would be welcome back at Hawthorn if he wants to but it's obviously a complicated part of his life and whether he wants to come back.
"If he does that would be great but like every club there are players that absolutely bleed the colours for the rest of their lives and there are players that maybe aren't that happy with things that happened at a club. And (with) Cyril, I'm always willing to chat if he wants to."

Rioli's recent catch-up with Hodge delighted the AFL community after the former Hawks captain revealed he hadn't been able to contact Rioli for a number of years. And it prompted moves from Hawthorn president Andy Gowers behind the scenes to bring some of the former players together after recent events.
In November last year, Hawthorn settled a federal court case with past First Nations players and their families, and issued an apology. Rioli was among a group of players who alleged they were racially vilified during their time at the club, and the case was settled without a determination of any of the parties' allegations.
And Rioli's no-show at Hawthorn's centenary celebrations last month suggested he's ready to return to his former club. A number of Hawthorn Hawks and premiership winners paraded the club's 13 cups on the ground before the big round eight win over Richmond but Rioli was nowhere to be seen.
"When you go through so much with a lot of guys, you want to see all their faces," Hodge said at the time. "We understand that Hawthorn and Cyril haven't come to the stage where Cyril feels comfortable back in the football club just yet. But time heals all wounds and we're hoping it gets to that stage with Cyril."

Coastal Carolina sweeps Auburn to reach College World Series for 2nd time

AUBURN, Ala. -- Jacob Morrison and Hayden Johnson combined to scatter eight hits and Coastal Carolina defeated Auburn 4-1 on Saturday to sweep the Auburn Super Regional and reach the College World Series for the second time. The Chanticleers will try to duplicate the national championship they won in 2016. Morrison allowed one run on six hits with six strikeouts in six innings. Johnson (5-0) came on in the seventh and pitched three scoreless innings with two hits and five strikeouts. Coastal Carolina's three-run seventh inning featured an RBI single by Walker Mitchell and a series of Auburn miscues led to the other two runs. With the scored tied 1-1 after Mitchell's single, he moved up a base on a single by Blagen Pado and scored from second on a throwing error by the first baseman on a ball hit by Ty Dooley. A walk by Ty Barrango loaded the bases and Coastal's third run scored when Wells Sykes was hit by a pitch. Mitchell drove in the final run with a single in the eighth inning. Cade Fisher (1-3) was on the mound in the sloppy seventh inning and allowed three runs, one earned, in 2 2/3 innings. Caden Bodine's 10th-inning home run early Saturday morning gave the Chanticleers a 7-6 victory in the first game. The Tigers played in the super regional round for the fifth time. They advanced to the College World Series in two of their previous four appearances. ___

'Not happy': Fans react amid sad news around Tony Squires and Candice Warner

Fans are expressing their sadness after it was revealed on Saturday that long-running sports program 'The Back Page' has been axed after 29 years. Tony Squires, who has hosted the show on Fox Sports for the last 12 years, confirmed the sad news but admitted he wasn't surprised. The sport talk-show has been running since 1997, but will wrap up for good after three more episodes. 'Ironically, I wrote a story in 2021 saying television shows don't usually last 25 years,' Squires told . 'They're like animals on the Savannah - very few of them die of old age. 'There's always something young and exciting with big nasty teeth, coming to get them. Well, The Back Page is now 29 years old, I've been hosting it for almost 13 years ... and we've been got. To be honest, it wasn't a shock.' The late, great Mike Gibson was the show's first host back in 1997, and held the role up until 2012. Peter FitzSimons, Billy Birmingham, Tracey Holmes and Jeff Wells were the panellists when it first began, and in recent times it regularly featured journalist Robert Craddock, ironwoman Candice Warner, NRL legend Greg Alexander and AFL great Brad Johnson. Warner, the wife of Aussie cricket great David, became a weekly panellist in 2022 and used the show as a launching pad for her burgeoning media career. Former AFL player-turned-radio host Ryan Fitzgerald was also a regular panellist, as were Socceroos legends Robbie Slater and Mark Bosnich. 'It's been a privilege to host a show once run by the legendary Mike Gibson,' said Squires, who's expected to stay on with Fox Sports in another role. 'But most of all it's been fun - like sitting at the pub with your mates pretending to know a shitload about sport. 'I'm going to miss it. Not because it was a job, but because it was my social life. I got to hang out with Kelli Underwood, Ryan Fitzgerald, Kerry O'Keeffe, Candice Warner, Brad Johnson, Ben Dixon and Robert Craddock - the most enthusiastic man on the planet. 'We've interviewed hundreds of sporting superstars over the years. From Rod Laver to Gout Gout – a 17-year-old kid who lit up the screen on his first live TV interview show just a few weeks ago.' Fox Sports boss Steve Crawley said the decision to cut 'The Back Page' is not a cost-cutting move, denying it has anything to do with Foxtel's new owners DAZN. 'At Fox Sports we have introduced a number of new shows in recent times and we have more in final planning,' he said. 'The Back Page has been entertaining audiences for nearly three decades; there are very few shows that can claim that. 'Entertainment programming is a tough business in that it's like life itself, how everything has a lifespan. Even the great shows like 'Hey Hey It's Saturday' and 'The Back Page'. In a big country with different codes of football and unique tastes, it's extremely rare for a sports show to survive, let alone for almost 30 years.' RELATED: Fresh blow for Panthers as four-time premiership winner retires Tennis world blasts 'classless' act after French Open women's final Crawley commended Squires and the team that made the show so successful. 'Host Tony Squires, panellists Crash (Craddock) and Fitzy, Candice Warner and Kelli Underwood and producer Matt Parslow have put in so much hard work,' he said. 'We'll celebrate Back Page over the final three weekly episodes.' Fans of the show took to social media on Saturday to express their sadness at hearing it's been axed. "Not happy at all about this decision," one person wrote. Another commented: "Great show. Looked forward to it every Tuesday. Can't believe it is ending." The Back Page Australia's longest-running television sports show is closing down after 29 years. Only 3 more episodes to go.I liked it best when Gibbo was host & Billy Birmingham, Peter 'Chippy' Frilingos, Mike Coleman & David Hookes used to chew the sporting fat. Crash ok too. — OBBY (@OBBY001) June 7, 2025

Coaches both say same thing after Geelong player's hit sends opponent to hospital

Chris Scott and Damien Hardwick have both agreed that Tom Stewart's hit on Noah Anderson was a fair bump, and the Geelong Cats player doesn't deserve a suspension. Stewart flattened Noah Anderson in Geelong's win over Gold Coast on Saturday night, and Anderson was later sent to hospital as a precaution. Play was held up while Anderson was assessed by medical staff, before he jogged slowly off the ground. He was eventually taken to the Suns' change-rooms, and later went to hospital for scans on his chest region. The Suns captain was cleared of concussion after his head hit the turf after the collision, which saw Stewart bump his opponent body-to-body. Some have suggested Stewart might draw a suspension because he ran past the ball to hit Anderson, but Scott and Hardwick don't think so. Cats coach Scott insisted Stewart showed the appropriate duty of care to Anderson and was adamant there would have to be a fundamental shift in rules for the five-time All-Australian to face sanction. "If it's a protective action where contact's unavoidable and you don't get them in the head, then you've done everything you can," Scott said in his press conference. "I sort of feel for Noah. Everyone loves him, he's a gun player and it was pretty heavy contact to the ribs, but it was to the body. Stewy, I thought his duty of care to Noah was as good as it could have been, and he was good enough to hit him in the body." Suns coach Hardwick agreed there was nothing untoward in the bump from Stewart, who was given a four-match ban in 2022 for a nasty hit on Richmond player Dion Prestia. "The game's combative, accidents happen on the footy field. It's one of those things," Hardwick said. "We'd love Noah to keep playing (but it's) within the rules, still allowed to bump. It was a reasonable hit, a solid hit. He's a big boy, Tom Stewart. But once again, we'll make it very clear, it was chest. It wasn't head or anything like that - no concussion. From our point of view he'll just go there (hospital) and see what that comes back at." RELATED: AFL world responds amid awful news about Dermott Brereton Lachie Neale at centre of AFL controversy after ugly scenes Speaking on Fox Footy after the match, reporter Jay Clark said he doesn't think Stewart has anything to worry about. 'He'll be fine,' Clark said. 'This is one of the bumps of the season. We should be celebrating this sort of physicality in our game. 'He executes the perfect bump, he doesn't hit him in the head there, Tom Stewart. We hope Noah Anderson is OK, but the MRO (match review officer) and the AFL will look at this tomorrow, and they'll ask 'Is it unreasonable? Is it excessive?' And it's clearly not. So, Tom Stewart will be playing against Essendon next week, in my view. "It's got to be unreasonable or excessive in the first instance. It's still got to be a reportable act; it's got to be rough conduct. And in my view, that was a clean bump to the shoulder. That's the sort of bump that we still want in our game, I think.'
