Coaches both say same thing after Geelong player's hit sends opponent to hospital

Yahoo7 hours ago

Chris Scott and Damien Hardwick have both agreed that Tom Stewart's hit on Noah Anderson was a fair bump, and the Geelong Cats player doesn't deserve a suspension. Stewart flattened Noah Anderson in Geelong's win over Gold Coast on Saturday night, and Anderson was later sent to hospital as a precaution.
Play was held up while Anderson was assessed by medical staff, before he jogged slowly off the ground. He was eventually taken to the Suns' change-rooms, and later went to hospital for scans on his chest region.
The Suns captain was cleared of concussion after his head hit the turf after the collision, which saw Stewart bump his opponent body-to-body. Some have suggested Stewart might draw a suspension because he ran past the ball to hit Anderson, but Scott and Hardwick don't think so.
Cats coach Scott insisted Stewart showed the appropriate duty of care to Anderson and was adamant there would have to be a fundamental shift in rules for the five-time All-Australian to face sanction. "If it's a protective action where contact's unavoidable and you don't get them in the head, then you've done everything you can," Scott said in his press conference.
"I sort of feel for Noah. Everyone loves him, he's a gun player and it was pretty heavy contact to the ribs, but it was to the body. Stewy, I thought his duty of care to Noah was as good as it could have been, and he was good enough to hit him in the body."
Suns coach Hardwick agreed there was nothing untoward in the bump from Stewart, who was given a four-match ban in 2022 for a nasty hit on Richmond player Dion Prestia. "The game's combative, accidents happen on the footy field. It's one of those things," Hardwick said.
"We'd love Noah to keep playing (but it's) within the rules, still allowed to bump. It was a reasonable hit, a solid hit. He's a big boy, Tom Stewart. But once again, we'll make it very clear, it was chest. It wasn't head or anything like that - no concussion. From our point of view he'll just go there (hospital) and see what that comes back at."

Speaking on Fox Footy after the match, reporter Jay Clark said he doesn't think Stewart has anything to worry about. 'He'll be fine,' Clark said. 'This is one of the bumps of the season. We should be celebrating this sort of physicality in our game.
'He executes the perfect bump, he doesn't hit him in the head there, Tom Stewart. We hope Noah Anderson is OK, but the MRO (match review officer) and the AFL will look at this tomorrow, and they'll ask 'Is it unreasonable? Is it excessive?' And it's clearly not. So, Tom Stewart will be playing against Essendon next week, in my view.
"It's got to be unreasonable or excessive in the first instance. It's still got to be a reportable act; it's got to be rough conduct. And in my view, that was a clean bump to the shoulder. That's the sort of bump that we still want in our game, I think.'

Milestone Papalii double lifts Raiders over Souths

Josh Papalii scored a fairytale double as he became the most-capped player in Canberra history and lifted the Raiders to a gritty come-from-behind win over South Sydney. Chants of "Papa" rang through GIO Stadium after the Raiders legend's two late tries, before Papalii converted his second himself to put the icing on a 36-12 victory and send the Raiders to the top of the NRL ladder on Sunday. Despite the veteran's late show, it was young five-eighth Ethan Strange who was responsible for turning the day around for the home side, after two early Rabbitohs tries for Keaon Koloamatangi and Alex Johnston threatened to rain on Big Papa's parade. Strange was unstoppable in wet and near-freezing conditions that made handling a tricky task. Just before halftime, the 20-year-old showed why he is one of the best running halves in the league by pushing past four Souths defenders to muscle his way to the tryline and lift the Raiders back into the game. THE MILESTONE MAN! 👏#NRLRaidersSouths — NRL (@NRL) June 8, 2025 Until then, Canberra had looked bereft of ideas in attack, but momentum suddenly swung their way. Strange replicated his effort after the break, jinking past more flat-footed defenders to put the Raiders back level. Soon after, Johnston failed to defuse a Jamal Fogarty bomb and back-rower Zac Hosking cleaned up the scraps to send Canberra ahead. The Raiders grew in confidence and doubled their lead through Simi Sasagi before Papalii, who was given a rare start by coach Ricky Stuart in his 319th game, came on for his second stint. In the 70th minute, the strong crowd of 19,438 that braved the miserable conditions were sent into raptures when hooker Owen Pattie sent Papalii over with a short range pass. Three minutes later the veteran went over after another Pattie pass and stepped up to land the conversion. The Raiders went top with the result, though Canterbury could usurp them when they face Parramatta on Monday. Other than a brief moment in round 2 of 2024, it's the first time Canberra have topped the ladder since round 6 in 2005.

Drug-friendly games enticing, but not for me: Chalmers

Kyle Chalmers hopes the drug-friendly Enhanced Games will push World Aquatics to boost prize money for clean swimmers. Chalmers doesn't begrudge athletes, including compatriot James Magnussen, from competing at the multi-sports event with no drug testing. "James is one of my really great mates so I'm definitely not going to knock him for going across there," Chalmers said on Sunday. "That is something that is hard in our sport, there's not a huge amount of money or prize money on offer and we kind of do it for the love of it. "So I am not going to be a person that slams swimmers for wanting to go across and make some money and give themselves a better opportunity in life or set their families up. "If they want to make that choice, then good on them ... I don't have any negativity towards that and especially towards James." Enhanced Games, founded by Melbourne-born entrepreneur Aron D'Souza, is offering $US1 million in prize money for anyone breaking the 50m freestyle world record and other events. Enhanced Games has already paid that bonus to Greece's four-time Olympian Kristian Gkolomeev for bettering the legal world record of 20.91 seconds set by Brazilian Cesar Cielo in 2009. Gkolomeev, while on performance-enhancing drugs, clocked 20.89 at a trial in the US last February. World Aquatics last week passed a by-law giving the global governing body powers to ban anyone who supports Enhanced Games. But Chalmers hoped Enhanced Games, to also feature athletics and weightlifting when staged in Las Vegas in May, would prompt World Aquatics to increase prize money. "I really, really hope so," Chalmers said. "Swimmers have been underpaid for a very long time at the big competitions. "I have never thought about it a huge amount because you do it for the love of swimming, and I have been well aware my whole career that there's not a lot of money to be made in it. "But when something like that comes in where there's so much money, I think it would be pretty enticing for quite a lot of athletes. "I'm very lucky to have a lot of personal sponsors so I do OK for myself, which is nice. "But I know that there's a lot of swimmers out there that really struggle." Gkolomeev's million-dollar pay-day came after the Greek said he made only $5000 a year during his clean swim career. "To make $1 million in one race is incredible," Chalmers said. "So I really hope that there is a shift, that we are able to get a little bit more prize money for what we do, but I guess we'll see. "I think it's threatening World Aquatics a little bit." World Aquatics has urged national federations, including Swimming Australia (SA), to enact their own bans. "At the moment, Swimming Australia's board is meeting to look at what is the policy that World Aquatics put down, I'll leave that kind of stuff to them," SA's head coach Rohan Taylor said on Sunday. "For me, I'm just focused on this team and working with these guys and providing the right environment for them for safe sport, clean sport - that's what we're about."

Benji goes public with nasty claim as Daley fixes mistake he made with Terrell May

Laurie Daley was accused of a major mis-step when he failed to contact Terrell May to explain why he'd been overlooked for selection in State of Origin 1. Many felt May's form was so good that he deserved a phone call from the NSW coach, which is normally only reserved for incumbent players being axed. It now appears Daley has realised his mistake and met with May face-to-face to explain. According to , Daley organised a coffee and chat with May in Concord last week to discuss where he sits in the NSW pecking order, and why he didn't get the nod for Blues selection. 'I've had a lot of meetings with a lot of players around Origin, but I prefer to keep those conversations private,' Daley said. 'It was a good chat.' Many thought May was a shoo-in for State of Origin selection when he made a barnstorming start to the year with the Wests Tigers, especially when incumbent captain Jake Trbojevic was ruled out. But Daley picked Max King on the bench instead, and went with Stefano Utoikamanu in his extended squad. With Mitch Barnett ruled out for the rest of the year with a ruptured ACL, Daley will likely promote King to the starting side and pick Utoikamanu in the gameday 17 for Origin 2. May doesn't appear to be in contention for the Game 2 squad either, with Souths forward Keaon Koloamatangi overtaking him in the pecking order. Discussing the situation on Saturday, Tigers coach Benji Marshall fuelled the nasty theory doing the rounds that May has been overlooked purely because of his name. There's still a lot of confusion around why the Roosters allowed May to leave this year as well, but Marshall reckons it's all to do with perceptions about his family. Terrell's brother Taylan was sacked by the Penrith Panthers in 2024, and is reportedly on the cusp of a return with the Tigers. Their eldest brother Tyrone also had a few off-field issues during his time in the NRL. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Marshall described May as a "great performer with impact on and off the field", and suggested he might be garnering more attention for Origin if he had a different name. "Given Terrell's form early in the season, I think he's been one of the best front-rowers in the game," Marshall said. "I don't pick the (NSW) team, but he's been outstanding for what he's done for us and I'm punching him out for pretty big minutes. I hate the stuff that gets thrown around about his personality and his character, because what we see is a guy who brings leadership to our team. "All the (negative) things that get said about him ... it's not true. I feel sorry for him because he's got a bit of a bad rap, but he's a really good bloke. What more can he do? Maybe if his name wasn't Terrell May he would make it."
