Geelong star defender in the clear over brutal bump

Geelong star Tom Stewart has been cleared of any wrongdoing for his crunching bump on Gold Coast's Noah Anderson. Stewart's decision to bump his opponent on Saturday as the two came in for the ball from opposite directions could have landed him in hot water, with the collision resulting in Anderson's head hitting the turf. Anderson wasn't concussed in the incident, but he was sent for precautionary scans on his chest. OUCH! A massive collision between two star players. Hope Noah Anderson is okay 🙏📺 Watch #AFLCatsSuns LIVE on ch.504 or stream on Kayo: ✍️ BLOG 🔢 MATCH CENTRE — Fox Footy (@FOXFOOTY) June 7, 2025 Given the actual bump wasn't high, the AFL deemed Stewart had no case to answer. "It was the view of the MRO (match review officer) that Stewart's actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances and did not constitute a reportable offence," the findings read. It means Stewart is free to play in Geelong's blockbuster clash with Essendon at the MCG next Saturday. In other MRO news, Isaac Heeney, Jack Martin, Joel Jeffrey and Thomas Green all copped fines for careless contact with an umpire.

Coaches both say same thing after Geelong player's hit sends opponent to hospital

Chris Scott and Damien Hardwick have both agreed that Tom Stewart's hit on Noah Anderson was a fair bump, and the Geelong Cats player doesn't deserve a suspension. Stewart flattened Noah Anderson in Geelong's win over Gold Coast on Saturday night, and Anderson was later sent to hospital as a precaution. Play was held up while Anderson was assessed by medical staff, before he jogged slowly off the ground. He was eventually taken to the Suns' change-rooms, and later went to hospital for scans on his chest region. The Suns captain was cleared of concussion after his head hit the turf after the collision, which saw Stewart bump his opponent body-to-body. Some have suggested Stewart might draw a suspension because he ran past the ball to hit Anderson, but Scott and Hardwick don't think so. Cats coach Scott insisted Stewart showed the appropriate duty of care to Anderson and was adamant there would have to be a fundamental shift in rules for the five-time All-Australian to face sanction. "If it's a protective action where contact's unavoidable and you don't get them in the head, then you've done everything you can," Scott said in his press conference. "I sort of feel for Noah. Everyone loves him, he's a gun player and it was pretty heavy contact to the ribs, but it was to the body. Stewy, I thought his duty of care to Noah was as good as it could have been, and he was good enough to hit him in the body." Suns coach Hardwick agreed there was nothing untoward in the bump from Stewart, who was given a four-match ban in 2022 for a nasty hit on Richmond player Dion Prestia. "The game's combative, accidents happen on the footy field. It's one of those things," Hardwick said. "We'd love Noah to keep playing (but it's) within the rules, still allowed to bump. It was a reasonable hit, a solid hit. He's a big boy, Tom Stewart. But once again, we'll make it very clear, it was chest. It wasn't head or anything like that - no concussion. From our point of view he'll just go there (hospital) and see what that comes back at." RELATED: AFL world responds amid awful news about Dermott Brereton Lachie Neale at centre of AFL controversy after ugly scenes Speaking on Fox Footy after the match, reporter Jay Clark said he doesn't think Stewart has anything to worry about. 'He'll be fine,' Clark said. 'This is one of the bumps of the season. We should be celebrating this sort of physicality in our game. 'He executes the perfect bump, he doesn't hit him in the head there, Tom Stewart. We hope Noah Anderson is OK, but the MRO (match review officer) and the AFL will look at this tomorrow, and they'll ask 'Is it unreasonable? Is it excessive?' And it's clearly not. So, Tom Stewart will be playing against Essendon next week, in my view. "It's got to be unreasonable or excessive in the first instance. It's still got to be a reportable act; it's got to be rough conduct. And in my view, that was a clean bump to the shoulder. That's the sort of bump that we still want in our game, I think.'

Ulster 'playing knockout rugby now'

United Rugby Championship: Ulster v SharksVenue: Kingspan Stadium, Belfast Date: Saturday, 26 April Kick-off: 19:35 BSTCoverage: Watch live on iPlayer, BBC Two NI & online, follow live text and watch highlights on BBC Sport website & app Ulster hooker Tom Stewart believes his side are playing "knockout rugby" going into their United Rugby Championship game against Sharks on results in the URC on Friday night, Ulster are 11th in the league standings, three points outside the all-important top they host the Sharks in Belfast this weekend, Richie Murphy's side finish their campaign away to Munster and Edinburgh, with Stewart feeling they are in must-win territory if they are to stand a chance of making the play-offs."I feel it's knockout rugby now, we're at a stage we need to win all these games to guarantee us going through," he told BBC Sport NI."It's nice to have that, it also puts a bit of added pressure, but one we can hopefully step up to." 'I'd love to get back in an Ireland squad' Stewart knows the Sharks will be a tough test given the number of South African internationals they have in their squad with nine World Cup winners named in their starting line-up for Saturday. But after facing a Leinster side stacked with Irish internationals last weekend, he hopes Ulster will be prepared for the challenge ahead."It's nice playing Ireland one week and South Africa the next!" he joked."We're delighted to be back at home and take it to them. There are opportunities there to go at them, they're a big pack and they'll want to go at us."They have a good scrum and a good maul, but it's a challenge we're excited for."Stewart still harbours ambitions of getting back into the Ireland squad after missing out on the Six Nations amid an injury-wrecked season that has restricted his game time at Kingspan back fully fit, some good displays in Ulster's last three games will surely put him in contention for the squad to take on Georgia and Portugal in the summer, when so many Irish players are expected to be on British and Irish Lions duty."I'd love to get back into a squad but at the minute I don't have the privilege of that," he added."I just need to keep working at Ulster and keep playing rugby as much as I can because when you go in and out and it's not as consistent as you want it to be, I do feel rusty at times."The biggest thing is just getting out on the pitch and staying out there."

'Put a stop to this': Calls for AFL to take action over infuriating Geelong move

Geelong coach Chris Scott has insisted Tom Stewart was nearly right to play against Brisbane on Saturday night, but the All-Australian was ruled out at the 11th hour. Stewart suffered a knee injury last week against St Kilda, but the Cats insist it's only a minor issue. The defender was named in Geelong's team to take on the Lions in Brisbane, but was taken out when the side was finalised before first bounce. AFL fans were highly sceptical that Stewart would play, and the fact he was listed as "likely" before the game raised eyebrows. When it was confirmed he wasn't playing, fans flocked to social media to complain. It's been a long-running complaint that Geelong aren't fully transparent with the extent of players' injuries, and there have been calls for years for the AFL to crack down on the practice of players being named when they're little chance to play. But speaking to reporters after the game, Scott insisted Stewart was a chance to play, and said they wouldn't have flown him to Brisbane if not. "We always take as long as possible, which is different to what I understand of some other systems where they want certainty earlier in the week," he said. "We take as long as we possibly can to make a good decision. "It's a little complicated when you're travelling. It's not ideal putting a guy on the plane and then having him not play, but it is an indication of how close we thought he was. He did a little bit today and just didn't feel quite right. "We were always going to err on the side of caution, which meant that if he was a fair way off yesterday we wouldn't have brought him. We gave him a chance to play and I'm told we should be really confident he'll play next week." Geelong's football manager Andrew Mackie said during the week: "Scans on Monday morning have ruled out any serious injury to Tom's right knee. With two training sessions remaining before we head to Brisbane, Tom will be closely monitored throughout the week and will be a test to play against the Lions on Saturday night." But the majority of fans weren't buying it, and many suggested Stewart was little chance to play. There's no suggestion that Geelong have been dishonest, but the situation reignited debate around the naming of teams. Aaaaaaaand Tom Stewart is on welcome 🤝🏻#AFLLionsCats — Footy Degenerate (@FootyIsMyJam) March 29, 2025 The AFL needs to put a stop to this crap — nath :) (@nathandg12) March 29, 2025 AFL has let Geelong get away with this for a literal decade. It's nonsense, like 100s before him, he was never playing. — Gil (@Doesgilgetalick) March 29, 2025 Geelong should be fined — Man Sam (@MANSAM642407) March 29, 2025 I think it was pretty clear they were going to pull Tom Stewart out didn't even train this week. Whereas Bailey Smith did. As for Knevitt sub as a Geelong fan not sure why but it was always a risk from the start I guess he would get it at some point — rjexxxx 🇵🇸🔻 (@rje1812) March 29, 2025 RELATED: Carlton fans savaged over 'embarrassing' act towards former player Simon Goodwin's confession after Max Gawn reveals family news Stewart was sorely missed as the Cats coughed up a 32-point lead at the Gabba to slump to 1-2 on the season. Geelong were cruising on a wet night, before Brisbane kicked seven goals to two in the second half to win 10.10 (70) to 9.7 (61). The loss followed an upset seven-point defeat to St Kilda six days earlier. "Big parts of the game we had under control, so it's very annoying we let it slip," Scott said. "But if you have losses early in the season and think ... 'we're so far off' ... we're miles away from that space. "You try to look forward. There have been so many years when we've ended up in a pretty good position and you look back and think 'that game's really going to hurt us' and in the end it hasn't. You'll get plenty of opportunities to feel sorry for yourself and let it compound, but you've just got to hang in a little bit."
