Dapsy hails Petros deal as historic step in power return to Sarawak

Borneo Post29-05-2025

Soo says Sarawak was witnessing a genuine return of power for the first time in 60 years since the formation of Malaysia.
KUCHING (May 29): The Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak has hailed the recent joint declaration between the Sarawak and federal governments on recognising Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) as the primary entity for natural gas sales, a historic beginning of federal power devolution to the state.
Its political education director Soo Tien Ren said Sarawak was witnessing a genuine return of power for the first time in 60 years since the formation of Malaysia.
'This achievement did not come easy. It is not mere rhetoric, but the result of practical reform efforts by the Unity Government.
'It reflects the spirit of devolution that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Unity Government carries, and is a direct outcome of the political vision long championed by the DAP.
'DAP has consistently advocated for decentralisation and local autonomy.
'Today, Sarawak's rights are no longer sidelined. This milestone is the result of our unwavering principles, fearless stance and relentless efforts,' he said in a statement today.
Soo claimed that the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP), having been in the state government for six decades, had nothing to show but failure and negligence.
He went on to charge that SUPP had stood as a passive gatekeeper within the then Barisan Nasional coalition, and is now trying to ride on this historic achievement and take credit.
'Sarawakians must make it clear to these politicians: the people are watching, and they see the truth. You were the failed gatekeepers, and now you try to pose as saviours – a laughable and desperate charade.'
According to Soo, the Unity Government stands for inclusion, cooperation and pluralism, and remains committed to fighting religious and racial extremism as well as to building a just and progressive new Malaysia.
He stressed that Sarawak, as a model of multicultural harmony, must protect this spirit of unity. DAPSY oil and gas Petros Soo Tien Ren

S'wak High Court dismisses applications by Petronas to postpone, stay Petros suit

National oil company Petronas called on the bank guarantee last October after demanding payment of RM28,136,403.08 from Petros for gas supplied. PETALING JAYA : The Sarawak High Court has dismissed two applications filed by national oil company Petronas to postpone or stay the hearing of a suit brought by Petroleum Sarawak Bhd, the state's sole gas aggregator. Judicial commissioner Faridz Gohim Abdullah rejected the applications and confirmed that the case will be heard on June 11, the Dayak Daily reported. Faridz ruled that no special circumstances had been presented to justify a stay or adjournment. 'The hearing of the case should not be further delayed,' he was quoted as saying. Petros is suing to restrain Petronas from utilising funds of RM7.95 million received under a bank guarantee previously given by Petros in respect of the supply of gas. Petros contends that Petronas's demand for payment under the bank guarantee was 'unconscionable' or 'unlawful'. In April, Faridz dismissed an application by Petronas to suspend all legal proceedings on grounds that Petronas had failed to show the existence of any sufficiently exceptional or compelling grounds to stay the proceedings. In October last year, Petronas had called on the bank guarantee after demanding payment of RM28,136,403.08 from Petros for gas supplied. Petros filed its suit against Petronas on Oct 15, 2024. The Sarawak state-owned oil company simultaneously sought an ex-parte interim injunction to restrain Petronas from pursuing the payment and receiving monies under the bank guarantee. However, Faridz ruled that Petros's injunction application had become 'redundant' as Maybank Islamic Bhd had already paid Petronas on the guarantee.

Dapsy Sarawak to SUPP: Sarawakians deserve answers, not political drama

George Lam KUCHING (June 5): The Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak has urged its political opponent, the Sarawak United Peoples' Party (SUPP) to stop the blame game and provide the answers that Sarawakians seek. Responding to SUPP labelling every question raised by DAP and every concern voiced by the public as an 'obstacle' to development, Dapsy Sarawak secretary George Lam said SUPP's approach 'is not just wrong but also dangerous for democracy'. 'Focus on the real questions we're asking on behalf of the people. Sarawakians deserve answers, not political drama. And the more you try to silence us, the more the people will start to wonder: What exactly are you trying to hide?' he said in a statement today. To make matters worse, Lam said SUPP had gone as far as to claim that DAP's criticisms were somehow 'eroding Sarawak's political stability'. 'Let's be real, if your government has nothing to hide, why not just answer the questions? Why try to silence those who speak up? Why attack DAP just for doing our job? 'It's pretty clear to me that they don't want to talk about the real issues, so they try to distract everyone by blaming the opposition,' he added. Lam pointed out that the ruling state coalition, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), of which SUPP is a component, holds nearly 80 out of the 82 seats in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN), while DAP has only two. Given this, he questioned how DAP could possibly impede development or cause political instability. 'It doesn't even make sense. This is just an excuse to avoid being accountable. What worries me more is that, with such a huge majority, GPS can pass any bill they want — even ones that might affect people's rights — without any meaningful debate. 'And what does SUPP do? They clap, praise GPS and vote 'yes' every single time,' he said. Citing the RM100 million travel expenses budget as an example, Lam said that this was a huge amount of money for ordinary Sarawakians, but in the last DUN sitting, it was passed in one session with no explanation and no questions allowed. He quipped: 'Just like that. Is this how public money should be handled?' He said DAP has persistently raised questions to keep the government in check and make sure that the people's voices are heard. 'When policies don't make sense or when public funds are involved, we must speak up. But instead of answering, SUPP chooses to attack us. That's not leadership but fear,' added Lam. Debate over SPM grades focuses on children's future, not about ‘playing politics', says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: The fight to allow students with A- grades into the matriculation programme is not about 'playing politics' but about securing the future of children and ensuring fairness, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. "This is not about race because we are fighting for all who are affected by the 'unfair policy' as education policies should not be changed at will, as our children's future is too important. "Some DAP ministers have accused me of playing politics over this issue. "Let me be clear, this is not about politics. It's about fairness for students and their families. It's about meritocracy and our children's future," said the MCA president on Facebook on Thursday (June 5). Dr Wee said DAP had lauded the Prime Minister last year when he announced that SPM candidates who scored 10As would receive automatic entry into matriculation, calling it a bold move. "But this year, without any public announcement, a circular dated April 30 stated that only A+ and A were considered as 'Grade A'. "Why was this done silently, after students had already taken their exams and received their results. "Where is the transparency and good governance DAP promised?" he asked. The Ayer Hitam MP said students had worked hard based on last year's criteria and now the goalposts had shifted, which he described as unfair. "If a policy is changed, it should be announced clearly, before students take the exam, not after," he added. Dr Wee said MCA had received hundreds of appeals from students and parents who were confused and heartbroken. "Last year A- was excellent, this year suddenly it's not. "We need solutions, not finger-pointing as the people deserve an answer," he added.
