Road safety must be daily, not just festive seasons, says S'wak Transport Minister

Lee puts on a safety helmet on a rider during the road safety campaign, while Ariffin (to his left) and the others look on. MIRI (May 31): Road safety must be embraced as a daily responsibility, not just during festive seasons, and every life saved is the result of a collective effort, said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. While the government continues to improve infrastructure and run awareness campaigns, the real impact depends on the commitment and responsibility of all road users, he said. Lee, also the Senadin assemblyman made the remarks during a road safety campaign held in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak celebration at Permy Mall here today. As part of the campaign, regulated helmets, safety vests, and reflective straps, sponsored by Sarawak Petroleum Berhad (Petros), were distributed to riders and drivers to encourage safer road practices. Citing statistics from the Royal Malaysia Police, Lee said Miri recorded 1,120 road accident cases from January to April this year, marking a reduction of 48 cases or 4.1 per cent compared to the same period in 2024. 'Fatal accidents dropped from 19 to 14, while serious and minor injury cases also decreased,' he said, urging motorists to remain alert, especially along Miri's top five accident-prone roads – Jalan Pan Borneo, Jalan Miri–Bintulu (near Borneo Medical Centre), Jalan Miri Bypass, Jalan Miri–Pujut, and Jalan Kuala Baram Bypass. 'Every accident is a tragedy, whether it involves the loss of life or damage to property,' he stressed. On a related note, he encouraged eligible secondary school students to sign up for the MyLesen programme, which offers affordable and legal motorcycle licences. 'We want the younger generation to be safety-conscious from an early age,' he said, adding that the programme eases the financial burden on families while ensuring youths receive proper training and education before getting on the road. Lee also extended his Gawai greetings to all Sarawakians, calling on the public to make road safety part of their daily habits. Also in attendance were Miri deputy mayor Ariffin Mohamad, and Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah. Gawai Lee Kim Shin miri road safety

Dapsy hails Petros deal as historic step in power return to Sarawak

Soo says Sarawak was witnessing a genuine return of power for the first time in 60 years since the formation of Malaysia. KUCHING (May 29): The Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak has hailed the recent joint declaration between the Sarawak and federal governments on recognising Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) as the primary entity for natural gas sales, a historic beginning of federal power devolution to the state. Its political education director Soo Tien Ren said Sarawak was witnessing a genuine return of power for the first time in 60 years since the formation of Malaysia. 'This achievement did not come easy. It is not mere rhetoric, but the result of practical reform efforts by the Unity Government. 'It reflects the spirit of devolution that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Unity Government carries, and is a direct outcome of the political vision long championed by the DAP. 'DAP has consistently advocated for decentralisation and local autonomy. 'Today, Sarawak's rights are no longer sidelined. This milestone is the result of our unwavering principles, fearless stance and relentless efforts,' he said in a statement today. Soo claimed that the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP), having been in the state government for six decades, had nothing to show but failure and negligence. He went on to charge that SUPP had stood as a passive gatekeeper within the then Barisan Nasional coalition, and is now trying to ride on this historic achievement and take credit. 'Sarawakians must make it clear to these politicians: the people are watching, and they see the truth. You were the failed gatekeepers, and now you try to pose as saviours – a laughable and desperate charade.' According to Soo, the Unity Government stands for inclusion, cooperation and pluralism, and remains committed to fighting religious and racial extremism as well as to building a just and progressive new Malaysia. He stressed that Sarawak, as a model of multicultural harmony, must protect this spirit of unity. DAPSY oil and gas Petros Soo Tien Ren

Sarawak surpasses 2030 renewable energy target 5 years early, hits 70 pct green power mix

Abang Johari (second right) being briefed at one of the exhibitions at the Asia Carbon Conference 2025. KUCHING (May 29): Sarawak has officially surpassed its 2030 target of 60 per cent renewable energy in its installed power capacity, five years ahead of schedule, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He said renewable sources now make up more than 70 per cent of Sarawak's total energy generation mix, with hydropower leading the charge. 'I am thrilled to announce that we have surpassed our 2030 target of 60 per cent renewables for installed power capacity ahead of schedule. 'Hydropower, our abundant natural resource, now contributes a staggering 70 per cent of our total energy generation mix,' he said during the Asia Carbon Conference 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today. This achievement, he added, is a key milestone in Sarawak's bold transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy, a transformation he described as being driven by 'ambition, robust policy, and sustained dedication'. He also revealed that the shift from fossil fuels has resulted in a 72 per cent reduction in Sarawak's grid carbon emissions between 2010 and 2023, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment for the state's nearly three million residents. 'We would like to outline a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach to climate action. Beyond hydropower, Sarawak is scaling up green hydrogen initiatives, implementing floating solar and mini-hydro projects, and promoting the adoption of electric vehicles across the state. 'Sarawak is rapidly establishing itself as a regional leader in carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), and a key hub for low-carbon innovation in Southeast Asia,' he said. Notably, he said Sarawak has committed to developing four carbon storage sites by 2030, with its state-owned entity Petros taking the lead. He cited a recent agreement signed between Petros, Petronas and Japanese partners for storage at the M3 depleted field offshore of Sarawak. abang johari energy generation mix lead renewable energy

Sarawak unveils ambitious Sustainability Blueprint 2030 to lead Southeast Asia's green transition

Abang Johari (centre) shows the Sustainability Blueprint 2030 booklet while others look on. KUCHING (May 29): Sarawak has positioned itself as a regional leader in climate action with the launch of its Sustainability Blueprint 2030, a comprehensive roadmap aimed at accelerating the state's transition to a low-carbon, green economy. Unveiled by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the Asia Carbon Conference 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today, the blueprint outlines 10 strategic thrusts, 48 strategies, and 111 actionable plans to guide the state's environmental and economic transformation. It was developed by the State Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability. 'Sarawak is determined to lead Malaysia and the region in climate action and sustainable development,' Abang Johari said in his keynote address. He highlighted Sarawak's significant progress in renewable energy development, noting that hydropower now accounts for 70 per cent of the state's energy mix. This shift has enabled Sarawak to cut its grid carbon emissions by 72 per cent since 2010 – well ahead of its 2030 targets. He also pointed to the state's growing hydrogen economy and the deployment of solar and mini-hydro solutions for rural electrification, along with rising adoption of electric vehicles. He cited the Sarawak Methanol Complex, launched in 2024 and already exporting, as a key driver of green industrial growth. On carbon management, Sarawak is developing four carbon capture and storage (CCS) sites by 2030, with Petros spearheading the state's Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) strategy. The recently enacted Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Ordinance 2023, effective since March, mandates GHG reporting and lays the foundation for carbon levies and emissions trading. Additionally, Sarawak is working with the World Bank to establish a Carbon Levy framework and finalising a comprehensive Carbon Plan to support a regulated, investor-friendly carbon market. Sarawak's commitment to biodiversity was also emphasised. The state has launched a Biodiversity Masterplan, integrated conservation into development planning, and enabled biofuel production using palm oil waste. Seven forestry carbon study permits have been issued, with one nature-based carbon project licensed and six more under review. Sarawak also aims to publish a full greenhouse gas inventory by 2027 to benchmark emissions against a carbon budget. 'This is not just Sarawak's carbon journey as this is our contribution to the planet and future generations,' said Abang Johari. With Malaysia chairing Asean this year 2025, Sarawak is positioning itself as a regional model for green development. Abang Johari called on local and international partners to collaborate on sustainable projects, reaffirming Sarawak's openness to investment and cooperation. 'Sarawak is open for business, and more importantly, Sarawak is open for collaboration. 'This is not just Sarawak's carbon journey as this is our contribution to the planet and future generations,' he said. The Asia Carbon Conference (ACC), which runs from May 29-30 at the BCCK, provides a critical platform for discussions on carbon pricing, CCS, nature-based solutions, policy frameworks, and green investment opportunities. abang johari Sustainability Blueprint 2030
