KUCHING (May 28): Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) together with its investors has committed more than RM100 million to evaluate Sarawak's carbon storage potential and develop a comprehensive database, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
He said the initiative aims to build a globally competitive carbon storage portfolio, enhancing Sarawak's expertise, investment appeal, and progress towards a low-carbon, sustainable economy.
'Petros, as the appointed resource manager, has launched the Sarawak Bid Round 2024 – Asia's first carbon storage-focused bid round – offering three offshore storage sites with significant geological potential.
'Petros is currently finalising the agreement and plans to award the successful bidders by end of Q2 2025,' he said during his ministerial winding-up speech here today.
Awang Tengah added that Petros is positioning Kuching and Samalaju as key hubs for Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), supported by the development of advanced infrastructure to establish integrated carbon storage systems within the next decade.
'This initiative will enable Sarawak to provide carbon storage solutions for both domestic and international emitters, opening up new opportunities in the CCUS industry,' he said.
He noted that Sarawak is poised to lead regional CCUS efforts, with the state holding more than 65 per cent of Malaysia's geological carbon storage potential.
'Sarawak is at the forefront of national and regional decarbonisation initiatives, driving sustainable solutions and reinforcing its key role in the global low-carbon economy,' he added. Awang Tengah carbon storage DUN Petros

We're only doing our job as opposition, Sarawak DAP tells GPS

Sarawak DAP's Michael Kong said it is unrealistic to expect the government to slash new borrowings from RM99 billion to zero within one to two years. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Sarawak DAP has fired back at Gabungan Parti Sarawak assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang for condemning the party's continuous attacks against GPS, calling it an attempt to stifle legitimate dissent and scrutiny. Michael Kong, an aide to Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen, said the party was simply fulfilling its role as the opposition and check and balance in the Sarawak assembly. 'Our duty is to represent the people, question excesses, and hold the government accountable. That is what a healthy democracy demands,' Kong said in a statement. Earlier, Lo said Sarawak DAP's repeated attacks on GPS called the government's unity into question. The Batu Kitang assemblyman said previous apologies from DAP over past offensive statements were discredited by their actions of repeatedly undermining Sarawak's leadership. Lo pointed out that DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook and adviser Lim Guan Eng had apologised to GPS over past statements by DAP leaders that offended the Sarawak government and people. He said these apologies, made before the unity government's formation, were quickly discredited by Sarawak DAP's actions. 'Sarawak DAP has done nothing but oppose GPS at every turn, questioning our policies, casting doubt on our initiatives, and repeatedly undermining Sarawak's leadership,' he said. Kong also slammed GPS assemblyman Wilfred Yap, who criticised the federal government for sidelining East Malaysia despite debt reduction by RM22 billion over the last two years. He said it is unrealistic to expect the government to slash new borrowings from RM99 billion to zero within one to two years, and that Yap's criticism 'reeks of double standards and selective outrage' 'It is deeply hypocritical for Yap to condemn the reduction of federal borrowings while applauding the Sarawak government's budgetary approach, which sees an increasing reliance on debt through its so-called 'alternative funding' mechanism,' he said. Kong also questioned Yap's criticism of the recently announced RM100 cash aid by the government to all Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above. 'Cash handouts are one of the most effective ways to directly channel financial aid to the people, particularly those in the B40 group. 'Is Yap now suggesting that programmes such as Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah should be discontinued because they are also cash handouts? 'If he truly opposes cash aid, he must also be prepared to tell the people of Sarawak that they should not receive any form of direct financial assistance,' he said.

Don't insult rakyat by saying PM trying to buy votes

MP SPEAKS | It seems to me that some people are determined to find fault with whatever initiatives that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the government carry out for the benefit of the people. This is clear after the several major initiatives including the one-off RM100 grant under the Rahmah Necessities Aid (Sara) programme, the delay in toll hikes for 10 highways, and the lower RON95 petrol price subsidy at RM1.99 per litre. We have stable growth, inflation, low unemployment rates, high foreign investment volume, and good EPF rates. We are bouncing back from Covid-19 and the economic mismanagement of previous administrations, such as the recession-ridden days of Muhyiddin Yassin. Just imagine my annoyance at reading false claims that the latest initiatives are ill-advised handouts and wastage designed to buy the people's votes at the next election. I wonder if the critics would be happier if the government did not try to help the people at all! Despite the good figures, these are difficult and unpredictable times with international tariffs and sales and services tax (SST), electricity tariffs also making possible impacts on the economy. There are difficult decisions that have to be made, because of the corruption and economic mismanagement of the past. So, when the government tries to give the people a buffer, why complain? Elite entitlement We are trying and have succeeded in combating the fiscal deficit, improving governance, and restoring investor confidence over the past two and a half years. One of the main initiatives is the expansion of the Sara programme, which will benefit 22 million citizens aged 18 and above, with an allocation of RM2bil. This is across the board and eligible Malaysians can redeem the one-off RM100 Sara aid credited to their MyKad at over 4,000 participating outlets nationwide to purchase essential goods, such as rice and eggs. So, the critics are upset, saying that this is nothing. To me it reflects the privilege and entitlement of the elite to fail to recognise that these contributions will mean something, especially to those in the B40. Let's not forget that aside from the expanded Sara programme, the government is also doubling the allocation for the Rahmah Sales programme from RM300mil to RM600 mil. Then how about the reduced RON95 petrol price, from the current rate to RM1.99 per litre, with the mechanism to be detailed by the Finance Ministry. Surely this will help us all, by easing the burden on the people and increasing the cash flow in the economy. Reducing fuel prices shows the government is committed to inducing growth and restoring some imbalances, particularly as in the long term the strategy is to have targeted subsidies on fuel prices. Greater economic programme All this is part of a greater economic programme with the 13th Malaysia Plan scheduled to be tabled on July 31, followed by Budget 2026 in October. So, we know that the opposition wants to disrupt the progress, but we don't mind, we are committed to peaceful assembly for rallies like 'Turun Anwar'. We know that some columnists and cybertroopers are being paid to attack our initiatives and confuse the people, but we are committed to freedom of speech. We know that some try to divide us on the basis of race and religion, but we remain committed to a progressive and prosperous Malaysia for all. R YUNESWARAN is the Segamat MP.
