Sarawak steps up role in ASEAN Power Grid, expands RE vision
OSAKA: Sarawak is stepping up a plan to integrate Borneo into the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), underlining its commitment to regional energy cooperation, said Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. He said Sarawak has been supplying electricity to West Kalimantan, Indonesia, since 2016 and is currently in the process of supplying power to Brunei. 'We will play our part to contribute to the APG. Sarawak is also actively enhancing its grid infrastructure to strengthen power distribution across the state and beyond,' he said after the opening ceremony of the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Japan, today. Besides renewable energy (RE), Awang Tengah said Sarawak is transforming its industrial landscape through strategic diversification into hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, oil and gas (O&G), petrochemical products, and aerospace. These developments complement the sustainable O&G sector and expansion into high-value petrochemical downstream activities, leveraging advanced technologies and sustainable practices, he said. 'Sarawak is shaping a dynamic economic hub in Southeast Asia, balancing economic growth and environmental responsibility while achieving long-term prosperity,' said Awang Tengah. He said Sarawak is going to be the hub for RE, anchored in hydropower as it has the potential to generate at least 30,000 megawatts (MW) or 30 gigawatts (GW), if fully developed. Currently, Sarawak is targeting an increase in its generating capacity to 10,000 MW or 10 GW by 2030, and to 15,000 MW or 15 GW by 2035. 'Apart from hydropower potential, there is also huge potential for us to develop this RE through solar power and bio-energy from biomass and waste,' he explained. Awang Tengah also revealed that Sarawak will be hosting Sarawak Week with the theme 'Sustainability for Tomorrow' at the Malaysia Pavilion for the World Expo Osaka from August 4-10. The Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka spans 2,654.52 square meters across three floors, reflecting the nation's diverse culture and dynamic economy. With the theme 'Weaving a Future in Harmony', the pavilion highlights Malaysia's commitment to a sustainable, inclusive and forward-looking future. The pavilion also serves as a hub for international collaboration and dialogue, as well as pocket talks, product launches, memorandum of understanding signings and business matching sessions. It will also host forums, summits, and networking events that would position Malaysia as a dynamic global partner.

Sarawak bids to lead Asia in carbon storage with RM100 mln Petros initiative, says Deputy Premier
Awang Tengah says the initiative aims to build a globally competitive carbon storage portfolio, enhancing Sarawak's expertise, investment appeal, and progress towards a low-carbon, sustainable economy. – Photo by Sarawak Public Communications Unit KUCHING (May 28): Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) together with its investors has committed more than RM100 million to evaluate Sarawak's carbon storage potential and develop a comprehensive database, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. He said the initiative aims to build a globally competitive carbon storage portfolio, enhancing Sarawak's expertise, investment appeal, and progress towards a low-carbon, sustainable economy. 'Petros, as the appointed resource manager, has launched the Sarawak Bid Round 2024 – Asia's first carbon storage-focused bid round – offering three offshore storage sites with significant geological potential. 'Petros is currently finalising the agreement and plans to award the successful bidders by end of Q2 2025,' he said during his ministerial winding-up speech here today. Awang Tengah added that Petros is positioning Kuching and Samalaju as key hubs for Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), supported by the development of advanced infrastructure to establish integrated carbon storage systems within the next decade. 'This initiative will enable Sarawak to provide carbon storage solutions for both domestic and international emitters, opening up new opportunities in the CCUS industry,' he said. He noted that Sarawak is poised to lead regional CCUS efforts, with the state holding more than 65 per cent of Malaysia's geological carbon storage potential. 'Sarawak is at the forefront of national and regional decarbonisation initiatives, driving sustainable solutions and reinforcing its key role in the global low-carbon economy,' he added. Sarawak recorded RM17.6 billion in approved investment last year
KUCHING: Sarawak recorded RM17.6 billion in approved investments across the services, manufacturing, and primary sectors last year, Deputy Premier Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said today. He said RM13.5 billion, or 76.6 per cent of the total, came from domestic direct investment (DDI), while foreign direct investment (FDI) contributed RM4.1 billion, or 23.4 per cent. "The investments, both from DDI and FDI, involved 376 projects and are expected to create over 7,800 jobs," said Awang Tengah, who is also the state International Trade, Industry and Investment Minister, in his winding-up speech in the State Legislative Assembly here today. He said investments in the services sector accounted for RM7.6 billion, or 43 per cent, closely followed by manufacturing at RM7.5 billion (42.9 per cent), while the primary sector received RM2.5 billion (14.1 per cent). Despite similar investment values, the manufacturing sector was the largest contributor to employment, generating 6,430 jobs or 81.8 per cent of total jobs created. "The manufacturing sector recorded key investments in chemical products (urea, melamine, polycrystalline silicon, and biodiesel) worth RM2.9 billion; electrical and electronic (E&E) products at RM1.2 billion; and non-metallic products (clinker, concrete, and cement) at RM800 million," he said. In the first quarter of this year, the manufacturing sector attracted RM681 million in investments across 24 projects, expected to create more than 900 jobs. Awang Tengah said 115 manufacturing and related services projects were approved last year, with over 65 per cent already successfully implemented, reflecting strong investment facilitation. He added that ongoing investments in industrial infrastructure, including industrial parks, logistics, and digital connectivity, would reinforce Sarawak's long-term growth and competitiveness, positioning it as a prime destination for investors seeking stability and strategic market access. Investor confidence, he noted, remains robust, as reflected in reinvestments totalling RM6.8 billion within the manufacturing sector, primarily in chemical and basic metal industries. "This underscores strong investor confidence in Sarawak's current business environment and affirms our growing reputation as a competitive and reliable investment destination," he said. Awang Tengah also said Sarawak's push for renewable energy, especially solar power, has garnered strong investor interest, with leading potential investors from Abu Dhabi, China, and Singapore currently conducting feasibility assessments. He added that the International Trade, Industry and Investment Ministry is actively streamlining regulatory processes, reducing bureaucracy, and improving policy transparency to enhance business efficiency. "We are adopting a whole-of-government approach to ensure a unified and strategic advancement of Sarawak's development priorities. "Concurrently, we are addressing critical gaps in the investment ecosystem, including upgrading key infrastructure and investing in talent development to better align with industry needs. "These efforts reaffirm our commitment to position Sarawak as a preferred destination for high-quality investments, now and in the years to come," he said. He added that Sarawak continues to attract investors due to its political stability, rich natural resources, strategic location, and investor-friendly policies.
