KUCHING (July 30): The Batang Lupar 1 Bridge has reached 84 per cent completion and is expected to be operational by the Gawai celebration in 2026, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
He said despite technical challenges, including an issue at pier number 52, the contractor had assured the matter would be resolved soon.
'We discussed about the bridge being usable by Gawai 2026. We hope all outstanding issues will be resolved and we will continue to visit and monitor the progress of this project,' he said in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report after a working visit to the project site in Sebuyau today.
According to the report, the 4.8km bridge forms part of the Sarawak government's ongoing effort to strengthen coastal road connectivity and will fully replace the long-standing ferry service between Sebuyau and Triso.
The RM848.7 million project began construction on Jan 7, 2021, and is one of 16 major bridge projects currently underway across Sarawak.
Uggah, who is also the State Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, said the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak is actively on the ground to assess and discuss any arising issues.
'Our aim is to minimise the number of delayed or problematic projects in the state,' he said.
He also revealed another major bridge project has commenced at Miri Marina, with a total cost of RM6.53 billion.
'The government's aspiration is for all these investments to have a direct impact on the state's economic growth through improved infrastructure,' he said.
Earlier, Uggah was briefed on the project status by JKR Sarawak director Dr Cassidy Morris, along with the technical leadership from Perbena Emas and the Sebuyau District Office.
Also present were Samarahan Division Resident Mohamad Irwan Bahari Bujang and Sebuyau District Officer Ayurad Iman Bujang. Batang Lupar 1 bridge completion Douglas Uggah

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the launch announced that each eligible student will receive RM1,200, disbursed in two phases of RM600 per semester via the S Pay Global platform. Open to all Sarawakian students regardless of household income, the BKK aims to ease the financial burden on families and help students focus on their academic journey. The aid is expected to benefit around 42,000 Sarawakian students currently enrolled in institutions of higher learning nationwide. 'The Sarawak government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has delivered on its promise. This shows that we care, not only about the students as Sarawakians, but because we are a government that is genuinely concerned about the future of our state,' said Abang Johari. Also at the ceremony here were Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof; Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn; Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi; Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Sarawak Attorney-General Dato Sri Saferi Ali; and other dignitaries. The Premier described the BKK as part of a larger strategy to empower youth through education and enhance Sarawak's global economic competitiveness. 'This assistance is provided regardless of students' backgrounds. We want to cultivate a generation that is knowledgeable, competitive and ready to seize opportunities not just within Sarawak, but internationally,' he said. Abang Johari also stressed the importance of preparing Sarawak's youth to become globally competent professionals in an increasingly borderless economic landscape. 'This is a strategic form of assistance. We have bright Sarawakian students who are intellectually capable and can pursue studies that are relevant to current global economic developments,' he said. He further noted that application numbers are expected to increase and reaffirmed the state's commitment to introducing more student-focused initiatives in the future. Introduced as part of Abang Johari's winding-up speech during the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting in November last year, the assistance was initially targeted at students from households with a per capita income of RM1,500 or below. However, the eligibility has since been broadened to include all full-time diploma and bachelor's degree students with Sarawakian status, regardless of socioeconomic background. Meanwhile, Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, in his speech said the aid is designed not only to ease students' financial pressures but also to motivate them to excel in their studies. A second application phase will open in September, catering to newly enrolled students and those who missed the initial round. Abang Johari BKK financial aid tertiary education

Sarawak cements leadership in good governance, public trust

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said one of the most crucial factors in national success is public trust, which is earned through opennes and accountability. 'Our public service must be people-centred and value-driven, where integrity is practiced not just at the top but at every level,' he said in a speech read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, during the launch of the Borneo International Integrity Summit (BIIS) 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday. Abang Johari said that to promote good governance across organisations, it must first be institutionalised. 'This step includes strengthening the capacity and independence of institutions like the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) and local integrity units,' he said. 'Our civil service must also be subjected to meritocracy, digital systems and public-centric service systems in order to practice good support systems and transparency.' Abang Johari noted that Sarawak has made rapid strides in positioning itself at the heart of business and economic activity. 'This development shows that we are on the right path and aiming for the better vision in the coming years,' he said. Based on the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, he said the strategy identifies good governance and integrity as fundamental enablers of Sarawak's transformation. He noted that these principles are not just vital for achieving long-term goals but also demonstrate a firm commitment to serving the people with honesty, using resources responsibly and strengthening public institutions to be resilient and trustworthy. 'It is about shaping a society that is just, inclusive and accountable. It is about building a future where every citizen, regardless of background or status, has equal access to opportunities. 'It is about ensuring that every ringgit spent is done so with integrity and transparency,' he said. He also emphasised that making decisions in the public interest, upholding good governance, and maintaining public trust must remain key priorities for the government. The summit attracted more than 800 participants, including students from both national and international universities, as well as delegates and personnel from state and federal government agencies.
