MIRI (May 31): Road safety must be embraced as a daily responsibility, not just during festive seasons, and every life saved is the result of a collective effort, said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
While the government continues to improve infrastructure and run awareness campaigns, the real impact depends on the commitment and responsibility of all road users, he said.
Lee, also the Senadin assemblyman made the remarks during a road safety campaign held in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak celebration at Permy Mall here today.
As part of the campaign, regulated helmets, safety vests, and reflective straps, sponsored by Sarawak Petroleum Berhad (Petros), were distributed to riders and drivers to encourage safer road practices.
Citing statistics from the Royal Malaysia Police, Lee said Miri recorded 1,120 road accident cases from January to April this year, marking a reduction of 48 cases or 4.1 per cent compared to the same period in 2024.
'Fatal accidents dropped from 19 to 14, while serious and minor injury cases also decreased,' he said, urging motorists to remain alert, especially along Miri's top five accident-prone roads – Jalan Pan Borneo, Jalan Miri–Bintulu (near Borneo Medical Centre), Jalan Miri Bypass, Jalan Miri–Pujut, and Jalan Kuala Baram Bypass.
'Every accident is a tragedy, whether it involves the loss of life or damage to property,' he stressed.
On a related note, he encouraged eligible secondary school students to sign up for the MyLesen programme, which offers affordable and legal motorcycle licences.
'We want the younger generation to be safety-conscious from an early age,' he said, adding that the programme eases the financial burden on families while ensuring youths receive proper training and education before getting on the road.
Lee also extended his Gawai greetings to all Sarawakians, calling on the public to make road safety part of their daily habits.
Also in attendance were Miri deputy mayor Ariffin Mohamad, and Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah. Gawai Lee Kim Shin miri road safety

13 deaths, nearly 700 accidents on Sibu roads from January to April

SIBU: A total of 683 road accidents involving 13 deaths were reported in Sibu between January and April, says Division Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman. "This is an alarming figure, more than just data – it represents a lost family, a stalled future, and a grief that cannot be replaced," he said at the launch of the Sibu Division Road Safety Campaign in conjunction with the upcoming Gawai celebration on Friday (May 23). The campaign, which aims to raise public awareness on road safety, involves members of the community, law enforcement agencies, and transport authorities. Abang Mohamad Porkan, who also chairs the Sibu Municipal Council and the division's Road Safety Council (MKJR), stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility that requires behavioural change among all road users. 'Without a shift in attitude – such as avoiding driving under the influence of alcohol, adhering to speed limits, and refraining from mobile phone use on the road – all our efforts will come to nothing," he added. Abang Mohamad Porkan also reaffirmed MKJR's commitment to improving road safety through continuous engagement and strategic planning. Regular meetings with agencies such as the district urban transportation and mobility action committee and the district public transport committee are being held to tackle issues surrounding public transportation and road safety more effectively, he said. As the festive season approaches, he reminded road users to stay vigilant and responsible behind the wheel to avoid further loss of life.

Auto Sales To Cool In 2025 After Record High In 2024, Says HLIB

REGION - CENTRAL > NEWS KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 (Bernama) -- Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) expects the automotive sector's total industry volume (TIV) for 2025 to normalise down to the 750,000-unit level, after achieving a record high of 816,700 units in 2024. The investment bank made the projection primarily due to declining order backlogs and easing new order intakes over the coming months. 'Nevertheless, there is still upside potential from exciting new model launches in 2025, along with more aggressive marketing activities to sustain sales by the various original equipment manufacturers, but at the expense of margins,' it said in a note today. bootstrap slideshow The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) projected the 2025 TIV to be at 780,000 units. On Monday, the association reported an expected weak April 2025 sales of 60,527 units, a drop of 16.8 per cent month-on-month (m-o-m), mainly due to fewer active working days during the month of Raya holidays. This brings the year-to-date tally to 248,730 units, down 5.4 per cent year-on-year. Meanwhile, MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Bhd has maintained its 2025 TIV forecast of 792,000, which is broadly in line with MAA's projection of 780,000 units, as high base effects begin to set in. 'With the revised excise duty for completely knocked down vehicles now scheduled to take effect in January 2026, potentially raising car prices by 10 per cent to 30 per cent if the ruling is upheld, there may be some degree of frontloading in demand this year,' it said. It expects TIV in May 2025 to improve m-o-m, supported by stronger demand from East Malaysia ahead of the Kaamatan and Gawai celebrations, as well as a greater number of working days.
