The Best Makeup Removers That Won't Destroy Your Skin, According To Dermatologists
Confession: I've been using makeup wipes to remove my makeup for years. They're convenient (I'll admit I'm a little lazy when it comes to my beauty routine), cheap and popular — but this convenience can come at a cost. And after talking to dermatologists, I'm convinced I need to make a switch.
Amazon
'The best makeup removers are ones that are great at breaking down heavy and/or waterproof makeup while being gentle on the skin,' Dr. Shoshana Marmon, a board-certified dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at New York Medical College, told us This criteria, unfortunately, does not align with most makeup wipes, according to both Marmon and Dr. Asmi Berry, a board-certified dermatologist in Los Angeles.
'Makeup wipes are one of the worst options because many contain ingredients such as alcohol, fragrance, and preservatives that can irritate the skin and disrupt the skin barrier,' Berry said. 'They also don't thoroughly remove makeup and often leave behind residue, which can contribute to breakouts or dryness.'
I've definitely noticed my skin feeling dry and overworked after rubbing away at it with a wipe. But if makeup wipes are out, what's in?
'The type of makeup remover that works best for you depends on your skin type and the makeup you wear,' Berry said. Both she and Marmon recommended oil-based removers for dry and sensitive skin because they can keep the skin hydrated with its natural oils intact while they cleanse. On the other hand, micellar water or gel-based water cleansers are good choices for oily and acne-prone skin that get the job done without the residue and harsh rubbing of makeup wipes.
'While these water-based removers are gentle, they may not be strong enough to remove products that are long-wear or waterproof,' Berry added. 'If you wear full-coverage foundation, waterproof mascara, or heavy sunscreen, you may need an oil-based cleanser or a double-cleansing routine to ensure everything is fully removed.' She recommends a gel- or oil-based cleanser first, and micellar water second for people who wear heavier makeup.
It's also important to pay attention to ingredient labels on makeup removers.
'Glycerin, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and plant-based oils help hydrate and protect the skin,' Marmon told us, while 'fragrance, alcohol, sulfates, and certain preservatives like parabens can cause dryness and irritation' and should be avoided. Berry agrees, adding that fragrances and alcohols can even 'disrupt the natural protective barrier, leading to increased skin sensitivity over time.'
If you're overwhelmed about the amount of options for makeup removers out there, Marmon and Berry have helped me round up some picks that they recommend to their patients. These work for different skin types and many are just as convenient as makeup wipes without the harsh ingredients.
1. Bioderma Sensibio H2O micellar water
Amazon
"For my patients, I often recommend fragrance-free and gentle removers that effectively cleanse without disrupting the skin barrier," Berry says. "Bioderma Sensibio H2O micellar water is a good choice for sensitive skin because it removes makeup effortlessly without irritation." Marmon similarly recommends this micellar water, as it's gentle and non-stripping.
The first micellar water ever created, according to the brand, this product has a no-rinse formula so you can just apply it with a cotton pad and then go about your day. It works on face and eyes, is fragrance-free and the bottle comes in several different sizes, including a 3.4-ounce bottle that's great for travel.
Get it from Amazon for $5.99+ (available in six sizes and a multi-pack).
2.
Amazon
"The E.l.f. Cosmetics cleansing balm is great for dry skin as it melts away makeup while nourishing the skin, and contains hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and peptides," Berry said.
The balm is oil-based and transforms from a solid to an oil when you apply it to the skin, making it a good choice for double cleansing as well — just cleanse with micellar water or a water-based cleanser afterward. The tub comes in three sizes, and a little product goes a long way. You only need about a dime-sized amount to get off most everyday makeup.
Get it from Amazon for $4.24+ (available in three sizes).
3. La Roche-Posay Toleriane micellar cleansing water
Amazon
You may have heard of La Roche-Posay's Toleriane line, which includes a reader-favorite moisturizer. Marmon likes this micellar cleansing water from the same line because it's "oil-free, won't clog pores and contains glycerin for hydration." The oil-free formula is both cleansing and toning and is so gentle you can use it on your eyes, lips and entire face. Plus, like the other micellar waters, it's no-rinse, so it doesn't take any more time to apply than a makeup wipe would.
Get it from Amazon for $18.99.
4. Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré
Amazon
This editors' pick, the Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré, is a reader favorite for its versatility. It's technically a moisturizer, but can also be used as a primer, cleansing milk and — you guessed it — makeup remover. Its formula contains hydrating natural ingredients like shea butter and aloe vera to nourish the skin. The multi-purpose product has garnered 4.5 stars on Amazon across almost 31,000 reviews, and multiple reviewers say they've been using it for years.
Promising review:"This is truly my holy grail product. I was introduced to this brand through Birchbox in 2013 and it's saved my skin in more ways than one. I use this to remove my makeup, to moisturize, AND as a foundation primer. I have angry skin and I've never had an issue with breakouts or clogged pores from using it. I had a terrible problem with dry patches on my face and foundation would just stick to them and flake off. Since I've started using this, my dry patches are gone and my normally oily t-zone has normalized. This replaces several products because it truly is a multitasker." — Paula Downie
Amazon
As gentle as the Lait-Crème Concentré is on sensitive skin, it does contain a tiny bit of fragrance. So if you'd rather cut that out entirely in accordance with derms' suggestions or due to allergies, Embryolisse also makes a Lait-Crème Sensitive that's essentially the same product but fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. You can still use the cream for all the same purposes as the original, and it contains the same soothing and nourishing ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter and beeswax.
Get it from Amazon for $32.
6. The cloth MakeUp Eraser Pro
Amazon
Another editors' pick, the MakeUp Eraser Pro is a great way to save some money: It's a cloth you can reuse and machine-wash again and again, meaning you won't have to restock as much as you would with something like a liquid cleanser in a bottle. Plus, the MakeUp Eraser cleans with just warm water. The soft surface and lack of harsh ingredients like alcohols make this a safer option for your skin than a makeup wipe.
The cloth has two sides, one short-pile to loosen and remove makeup and one long-pile to exfoliate the skin afterward. You can get the Eraser in a range of different colors and patterns to add some fun personality to your beauty routine.
Promising review:"This is my 3rd makeup eraser, I like to have multiples when they need washed. I'm not sure the magic but they remove makeup so well. Haven't used a makeup wipe in years thanks to this. I really appreciate the new design having a loop so I can easily hang it on a towel hook to dry. They hold up well in the wash, as I have washed mine several times and they still work great." — Amazon Customer
Amazon
Squalane, a lipid that is naturally found in your skin's oils, can be incredibly moisturizing for dry skin and is noncomedogenic. That's why we like The Ordinary's Squalane Cleanser, which moisturizes as it removes makeup and is alcohol-, fragrance- and paraben-free. The cleanser melts into an oil and protects the skin's natural barrier as it lifts makeup away. Some reviewers say they enjoy using this as a first cleanse in a double cleansing routine.
Promising review:"My FAVORITE hands down cleaner EVER!!! Such a little goes so far and removes even my most ultra waterproof eye makeup in less that 5 mins. I love the cream to oil concept and I will never stop buying this" — Tiana
Get it from Amazon for $10.50+ (available in two sizes).

This whitening pen 'worked better than a visit to my dentist' — a 3-pack is down to $14
No shade, but that morning coffee is doing a number on your teeth. If you love a daily cup of joe or glass of red wine, chances are you've noticed your teeth getting dingier over time. Some folks have tried everything from whitening strips and trays to special toothpastes, but still haven't been able to return to the glory days when their teeth were at their whitest. All's not lost, though. There's one product that over 14,000 Amazon shoppers say leads to positive results. Introducing the VieBeauti Whitening Pen, and Amazon's got a three-pack on sale for only $14 when you apply the on-page coupon. We've barely seen the price of these big sellers on Amazon — with over 4,000 purchased in the past month — drop lower than $14 per pack, so snap 'em up while you can. And don't forget to clip the on-page coupon for an extra 15% off. If your smile isn't as bright as it used to be, these at-home whitening pens may be a way to get around the hassle — and considerable expense — of professional whitening treatments. The pen uses a brush tip applicator. Simply twist the bottom to release the gel into the brush, spread it on your teeth, and let it sit for at least 20 to 30 seconds while smiling. After that, you may relax your lips, but avoid eating or drinking for the next 30 minutes. That's it! The pens are safe even for those with sensitive teeth and can be easily used on the go. Since this pack comes with three pens, you can keep one in the bathroom, one in your purse and one at work for any time, anywhere whitening. More than 14,000 shoppers are grinning from ear to ear about these VieBeauti Whitening Pen, giving them a glowing five-star rating. "This worked better than a visit to my dentist!" raved one shopper. "I like everything about this whitener. Easy to use, comes in threes so I can travel with one and results are better than I had hoped!" Another happy user reported: "No tingling, discomfort or negative side effects. Just gorgeous white teeth for a fraction of the cost from the dentist." "I'm a big coffee drinker, and I noticed my teeth were getting a bit discolored," said a satisfied reviewer. "I know in the past my sister said she paid a lot of money to have her teeth whitened by a professional and she said it didn't make much of a difference. ... I looked at multiple products and decided on this one. I am so glad I did! I love this stuff so much that I bought more of it when I ran out." Another java lover shared, "These 67-year-old teeth have just reason to be yellow from years of coffee. I was surprised how easy this was to use, and that I actually did see results ... without any sensitivity." "I've used professional whitening gel purchased from my dentist before, and the sensitivity it caused was so bad, I had to stop," said a satisfied user. "I feel like I'm getting about the same results with this gel without that sensitivity, so I couldn't be happier." Some reviewers aren't smiling about the taste. "I don't think I have consistently used it long enough to see big results, but the taste is not good to me," explained this reviewer. "Kind of a pain to 'let it dry' on your teeth. I usually end up using my hair dryer to speed it along." A final shopper stated: "Yes, I see a bit of whitening, but will get strips next time. The gel doesn't firm up or dry, so you end up swallowing the gel and it does not taste good." If you still prefer to go the whitening strip route, Crest has your teeth covered (literally): If you have Amazon Prime, you'll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here. (And by the way, those without Prime still get free shipping on orders of $35 or more.) Orbital: A Delicious, Jitter-Free Cold Brew Concentrate
If, like me, you love coffee but can't tolerate caffeine (or you are simply looking to cut back on the amount you consume), then you're in luck. The universe has blessed us with a truly sumptuous decaf concentrate from Orbital Coffee. I am not kidding when I say it tastes just as good, if not better, than any cold brew you can buy from even the hippest coffee shop. Those of us who are relegated to drinking decaf every day know that it is rare to find decaffeinated cold brew. I've long resorted to making it at home in a French press, to mixed (mainly poor) results. When the warm weather hits, I become deeply jealous of everyone showing off their tasty cold brew coffee. So when I first heard that Orbital Coffee specializes in decaf blends, and, more specifically, makes a coffee concentrate that is perfect for cold brew, I knew I had to get my hands on it. Orbital uses a chemical-free Swiss water decaffeination process that removes caffeine without stripping it of its natural inherent flavors or infusing it with possibly harmful chemicals. The Ethiopia concentrate has a really rich, smooth and creamy flavor with peach, molasses and brown sugar tasting notes. The Colombia concentrate is slightly juicier, with citrusy notes paired with caramel, dark chocolate and brown sugar for a bright, silky honey finish. I'm absolutely smitten with both of these flavors. They rival the bold flavor and deliciously smooth texture of regular iced coffee or cold brew, but without the jitters. I'd often drink two cups a day and never felt any caffeine-like effects. They're also lower in acidity than the average coffee concentrate, making them easier on the tummy. While both of these concentrates can be warmed and enjoyed hot, I delighted in drinking them over ice. It's so rare that decaf drinkers can enjoy a truly lush and decadent cold brew, sans caffeine. You can snag them at the Orbital website for either $15 or $30, depending on which size you get. The brand does have an Amazon storefront, but as of right now, it's only selling coffee beans there. Hopefully, we'll be able to get the concentrate there one day! Get the Ethiopia concentrate or the Columbia concentrate from Orbital Coffee for $15+ (available in two sizes).

I love this $20 Amazon ice roller for depuffing my face and tons of other benefits
More than just a beauty product, the Esarora ice roller offers an instant cool-down for your face and body. It depuffs, sculpts and tightens the skin for an easy anti-aging treatment, but it also helps with aches, pains and other discomfort from head to toe. Come summertime, the frozen tool is great for keeping cool and comfortable on hot days too. After a year of using this Amazon gadget, I'm sharing why I consider it one of the best ice rollers out there. Esarora Ice Roller Keep this editor- and celebrity-loved ice roller in your freezer for an on-demand depuffing treatment. The chilled roller also helps with calming inflamed skin, easing aches and pains, combatting hot flashes and more. The Esarora ice roller has been on my radar for years. In the early 2020s, it seemed to be one of those inescapable Amazon hits that bloggers and celebrities swore by (see model and entrepreneur Karlie Kloss using it on Jimmy Fallon below). The skin care tool has also garnered attention on TikTok as at-home facial treatments, from chemical peels to dermarolling, have gained popularity, leaving users in need of a quick fix to soothe and calm skin. A post shared by Jimmy Fallon (@jimmyfallon) Along with all this fanfare are the Amazon reviews — over 22,000 of them, amounting to an overall 4.6-star rating. I read through pages and pages of the glowing reviews, learning about all the ways people use the ice roller: for depuffing, inflamed skin, muscle soreness, hot flashes, migraines, hangovers, sinus pressure, joint pain, overheated/flushed faces, post-medical procedures and more. I didn't need any more convincing to order the Esarora ice roller last summer. I've tested a number of cryotherapy tools and ice rollers over the years and the Esarora remains a favorite. At $20, it's one of the cheapest I've found, and I like it even better than some of the pricier alternatives. The Esarora roller is a bit bigger than you'd expect for a facial massager, but that extra surface area is what makes it so versatile. It effortlessly glides across my face, never pulling or tugging at my skin, and leaves me looking more sculpted, awake and glowy. Essentially, the cooling treatment increases circulation and the massaging action helps promote lymphatic drainage. But its depuffing power is just the beginning of its benefits. It feels great on my shoulders and neck when I have tension, and I've also used it to calm down mosquito bites all over my body. My face tends to get hot and red when I work out, so I love pulling out the ice roller to cool down too. The tool is truly effortless to use. As long as you keep it in the freezer, you'll have instant cryotherapy. The frozen gel part of the tool stays cold for over an hour, which really impressed me. I've tried stainless steel ice rollers that are incredibly cold (almost disagreeably so) that rise to room temp in half that time. If you want different cold intensity levels, the Esarora ice roller also comes in a set with both a gel head and a stainless steel head. If I'm nitpicking, the only thing I don't love about the Esarora ice roller is its bulky handle. It's not the most ergonomically comfortable to hold, but that doesn't detract from how effective the tool is overall. Over the past year, the Esarora ice roller has become a fixture of my freezer. One of my favorite ways to use it is to enhance my skin prep, especially in the summertime. Gliding the ice roller over a calming sheet mask never fails to revive my skin after I've gotten too much sun. How do you use the Esarora ice roller? How do you use the Esarora ice roller? For the initial use, place the roller head in the freezer overnight or for at least an hour so it freezes. Once it's nice and cold, all you have to do is attach the head to the handle and glide it over any area you want to treat. I keep my entire ice roller, handle and all, in the freezer so it's ready to go whenever I want to depuff and cool down. How many times a week should you use an ice roller? How many times a week should you use an ice roller? You can use an ice roller as often as you wish. Reaching for it in the morning, when the face is typically the puffiest, will help get your circulation going and combat any swelling. Do dermatologists recommend ice rollers? Do dermatologists recommend ice rollers? Yes — in fact, two dermatologists shared the many beauty benefits of using cryotherapy tools in our guide to the best ice rollers. CNN Underscored has a team of skilled writers and editors who have many years of experience testing, researching and recommending products, and they ensure each article is carefully edited and products are properly vetted. We talk to top experts when applicable to make certain we are testing each product accurately, recommending only the best products and considering the pros and cons of each item.
