M&S tells warehouse agency staff to stay home as cyber incident continues

Yahoo28-04-2025
LONDON (Reuters) - British retailer Marks & Spencer told agency staff at its central England distribution centre to stay at home on Monday, after it stopped taking online orders following a cyber incident last week.
Shares in the company, one of the best known names on Britain's shopping streets, were trading down 2% on Monday, having lost as much as 8% since April 22 when it said it had been grappling with a cyber incident for a few days.
M&S told agency staff who usually work at its Castle Donington distribution centre near Derby not to come in, according to a person familiar with the situation. Agency staff are used when the warehouse is at its busiest.
About 200 people were told not to come in, said Sky News, which first reported the story.
An M&S spokesperson said on Monday there was no further update on the cyber incident following a statement on Friday which announced it was stopping orders from its website and app as part of its "proactive management" of the incident.
The chain, which has about 1,000 stores across Britain, makes around one third of its clothing and home sales online. It has said it is working with experts to resolve the issue.
Investec analyst Kate Calvert said that the longer it took for online sales to resume, the worse the hit would be for M&S.
"There will be a short-term profit impact without a doubt," she said.
M&S, which sells upmarket groceries as well as clothing and home products, posted bumper Christmas sales in January and is due to publish full-year results on May 21.
Nathaniel Jones, VP of security at cyber security group Darktrace, said the fact that M&S had taken systems offline suggested it was likely a ransomware-related event.
"Retailers are increasingly targeted because they combine valuable customer data with complex, interconnected systems," he said.

Why Coherent Stock Tanked by Nearly 20% on Thursday

Key Points The company's top- and bottom-line growth was robust in its fiscal fourth quarter of 2025. The two metrics also topped the consensus analyst estimate; however, investors found certain developments worrying. 10 stocks we like better than Coherent › Photonics company Coherent (NYSE: COHR) wasn't a bright light on the stock exchange Thursday. Despite delivering a second quarter that (slightly) beat analyst estimates, factors such as growth deceleration in a key business segment raised some concern. With that, more than a few market players assertively sold out of the stock to leave it with a loss of almost 20% on the day. That compared quite unfavorably to the more or less flat trajectory of the S&P 500 index. A double beat wasn't good enough For its fiscal Q4 of 2025, Coherent's revenue was $1.53 billion, notching a new record for the company. That figure was also 16% higher year over year. The company's non-GAAP (adjusted) net income grew more modestly, advancing by nearly 9% to $192 million or an even $1.00 per share. Both headline figures came in slightly higher than the consensus analyst estimates of $1.51 billion for revenue and $0.92 for adjusted earnings per share (EPS). Coherent attributed the improvements to the liveliness of certain revenue drivers, such as artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. However, in a new research note on the company, analyst Vivek Arya from Bank of America Securities pointed out that the company's revenue growth in the data center space was slowing. According to reports he wrote, this was 24% in Q4, but 39%, 46%, and 58% in the three preceding frames. This was one of the factors that inspired Arya to downgrade his recommendation on the stock to neutral from his previous buy. Modeling a better first quarter Coherent management proffered guidance for its current (first) quarter. It believes revenue will fall between $1.46 billion and $1.6 billion, and adjusted EPS will come in at $0.93 to $1.13. Both ranges start well above Q4 of fiscal 2024's $1.31 billion on the top line and adjusted EPS of $0.61. The average analyst estimates of, respectively, $1.55 billion and $1.03 per share for the present quarter are within the two guidance ranges. Should you buy stock in Coherent right now? Stock Market News Review: SPY, QQQ Stumble on Souring Consumer Sentiment as Trump-Putin Summit Kicks Off

Both the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) and the Nasdaq 100 ETF (QQQ) closed in negative territory as investors await updates from a high-stakes summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders have already touched down at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage, Alaska, with discussions underway to end the Russia-Ukraine war. The meeting, initially planned to be a one-on-one event, now consists of three participants from each side. Trump is joined by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff, while Putin is accompanied by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov. 'All I want to do is set the table for the next meeting, which should happen shortly,' Trump said before taking off to Alaska. Earlier this week, he explained that a second meeting could include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders. Meanwhile, the market received a shock after the University of Michigan's preliminary August Index of Consumer Sentiment showed a reading of 58.6, below the expectation for 62.0 and falling from 61.7 in July. If the reading holds, it would mark the first decline following four consecutive months of increases. 'Overall, consumers are no longer bracing for the worst-case scenario for the economy feared in April when reciprocal tariffs were announced and then paused,' said Surveys of Consumers Director Joanne Hsu. 'However, consumers continue to expect both inflation and unemployment to deteriorate in the future.' In addition, consumers now expect year-ahead inflation of 4.9% compared to 4.5% in July. Long-term inflation expectations jumped to 3.9% from 3.4%. July's elevated Producer Price Index (PPI) and core Consumer Price Index (CPI) add to the evidence that inflation could be mounting a comeback as consumers face higher prices from the Trump administration's tariffs. Import prices are also on the rise, signaling that U.S. trading partners aren't lowering prices in order to offset higher domestic prices. July's import prices rose by 0.4% month-over-month, ahead of the expectation for prices to remain unchanged. Import prices fell by 0.2% year-over-year. On the tariff front, Trump said he would announce the rate for semiconductor imports in the coming weeks, adding that it could be as high as 200% or 300%. That's much higher than the 100% figure he suggested during a White House event with Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook earlier this month.
