First baseman Bryce Harper has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Friday, with right wrist inflammation. And according to the slugger, it sounds more severe than any Philly fan would've liked to hear.
"It got to the point where I can't really function on a baseball field or hit a baseball," Harper said before Saturday's game. "It's a good time for me to take some time and get it right."
Harper largely echoed manager Rob Thomson's thinking with that answer. Thomson said Friday that anything involving the hands or feet is concerning and wouldn't be something the club overlooks.

Harper went on to confirm that this injury is the same issue he dealt with throughout last season. This time around, it started early and hasn't gone away.

"(I) felt it early in the season and tried to play through it as long as I could," Harper said. "Just trying to get through it the best I can. It's going to take some time (to heal)."
Harper did not offer any timetable on when he could return. The first day he's eligible to do so is Monday, June 16, when the Phillies travel to Miami.
Shortly after that, the New York Mets come to Philadelphia for three games from June 20-22. The Phillies would like to get him back for a series that will have major implications for the National League East Division race.
Harper is slashing .258/.368/.446 with nine home runs, 13 doubles and 34 RBIs. Prospect Otto Kemp, who made his major league debut Saturday, is holding Harper's spot on the roster for now.

Red Sox All-Star Aroldis Chapman Could Be 'First Moved' Ahead of Trade Deadline
Red Sox All-Star Aroldis Chapman Could Be 'First Moved' Ahead of Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the MLB trade deadline approaches, Aroldis Chapman has emerged as one of the most intriguing bullpen arms available, and the Boston Red Sox may soon have to decide whether to move him. Advertisement "Chapman is in the midst of his best season since 2016," wrote Theo DeRosa, who recently named the veteran left-hander one of nine relief pitchers who could be dealt this summer. "The left-hander has a 1.80 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 25 innings for the Red Sox, who have gone cold and currently occupy fourth place in the American League East. If Boston decides to sell, Chapman could be among the first players moved." Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman (44) pitches against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Biggerstaff-Imagn Images Signed this offseason to a one-year, $10.75 million deal, Chapman has been a rare bright spot in an otherwise inconsistent Red Sox bullpen. In 30 appearances, he has posted a 1.65 ERA over 27 1/3 innings with a dominant 34 percent strikeout rate. His fastball velocity and command have returned to elite form, resulting in a likely All-Star nod in the mid-summer classic. In the middle of a nine-game stretch against the AL East, the Red Sox have already won two of three games over the New York Yankees, and if they come out winners by the end of the week, it could prompt the Red Sox to refrain from selling in the immediate future. Advertisement However, Monday's loss vs. the Tampa Bay Rays dropped the Red Sox to 32–36 on the year. Unless Boston can reverse course quickly, Chapman could become trade bait at the deadline and net Boston quite the return for the once again dominant closer. MLB Insider Says Phillies Should ‘Worry' at MLB Trade Deadline
MLB Insider Says Phillies Should 'Worry' at MLB Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies are 10 games above .500, but one MLB insider thinks the team has several holes to fill as the MLB Trade Deadline draws closer. According to ESPN's Bradford Doolittle, the Phillies are in dire need of improvements at several key spots. Advertisement Doolittle says fans and the team alike should "worry" about what they need at the deadline, especially with an injury to Bryce Harper and an "average" offense that he says is being carried by Harper, Trea Turner and Schwarber. Oh, and offensive firepower is not even his biggest concern. "The position group once again rates as one of baseball's poorest defenses," Doolittle said. The starting rotation remains the most solid component to this Phillies team, which can only carry a team so far with lackluster production outside of the starting pitchers. Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper (3) looks on during an injury delay in the ninth inning against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Hamilton-Imagn Images Unfortunately for Phillies fans, defensive woes and an average offense are not Doolittle's only concerns. Still, the insider noted an ideal scenario for Philadelphia to attack the deadline. Advertisement "If the offense can produce consistently -- and soon, given the competitive environment in the NL -- Dave Dombrowski can focus his trade resources on upgrading the Phillies' leaky bullpen," Doolittle wrote. But at 10 games above .500, If Dombrowski can somehow address the bullpen and what some consider one of the worst defenses in the MLB, this team still has plenty of playoff potential. That potential will depend on if Harper can return from his wrist injury sooner rather than later. According to Paul Casella at it is the same injury he battled for much of last season. Harper has now been on the 10-day injured list since Saturday, June 7. That means he can return to play as early as next week Tuesday, June 17. Red Sox Projected to Trade $38.5 Million All-Star Pitcher After Kristian Campbell News
Red Sox Projected to Trade $38.5 Million All-Star Pitcher After Kristian Campbell News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Any games featuring Boston Red Sox teammates Kristian Campbell and Lucas Giolito, at least in the short term, will feature Campbell at second base and Giolito on the mound. Advertisement Whether or not that partnership will continue past the trade deadline, though, remains to be seen. Although Campbell's future in Boston is safe given his top prospect status, Giolito is a pending free agent on a team potentially destined for a fourth losing season in six years. Could, and would, the 29-33 Red Sox wave the white flag and fully pivot to a Campbell-led future? If so, Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer won't be surprised to see Boston trade Giolito ahead of the July 31 deadline. Giolito, who turns 31 next month, owns a 4.78 ERA and 26-10 K-BB ratio over 32 innings. He's a long way removed from the young pitcher who earned All-Star honors with the Chicago White Sox in 2019, and it's been four years since his last above-average season. Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Lucas GiolitoDale Zanine-Imagn Images "He's at least an innings-eater," Rymer argued, "and it probably wouldn't be hard to get Boston to eat some of his $19 million salary." Advertisement Indeed, Giolito is in the final year of a two-year, $38.5 million contract. The Red Sox (or whoever holds his rights come the offseason) also have a $14 million club option if he throws fewer than 140 innings. However, that becomes a $19 million mutual option if he hits that innings mark. Giolito signed that contract before missing all of last year with right elbow surgery. The inconsistent Red Sox are already making significant moves, announcing Monday that Campbell won't receive reps at first base after all. Instead, manager Alex Cora made it clear they're keeping Campbell at second. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow notably backed Cora over the weekend amid repeated calls for a managerial change. Advertisement Time is running out for Campbell, Giolito, and the Red Sox to right the ship. Boston enters Tuesday trailing by nine games in the AL East, and the Red Sox are 4.5 games out of the AL's third and final Wild Card spot.
