Fyre Festival 2 issues refund for Mexico event, stops ticket sales

Boston Globe17-04-2025

The Washington Post could not confirm those statements, but a reporter who planned to attend the festival
received an email receipt for a refund worth $1,604.17 from Soldout.com, the ticketing partner for the event. On Wednesday evening, the Soldout.com page for the event no longer listed any ticket options. An organizer for Fyre 2 did not immediately respond to emails from The Post.

A postponement or cancellation would be another setback for Fyre founder Billy McFarland, who was sentenced to six years in prison for defrauding investors of $26 million over the first version of the festival in 2017, which left concertgoers stuck with little food and flimsy conditions amid promises of a premier concert event. The original Fyre Festival became the subject of two documentaries and widespread internet memes.

McFarland announced a sequel to the Fyre Festival in February - nearly three years after he was released from prison - immediately raising eyebrows and suspicions. The original Fyre Festival, with sparse amenities for attendees who had paid for a luxury event, was held in the Bahamas in 2017.
'I'm sure many people think I'm crazy for doing this again,' McFarland said in a release posted to Instagram when the sequel event was announced. 'But I feel I'd be crazy not to do it again. After years of reflection and now thoughtful planning, the new team and I have amazing plans for FYRE 2. The adventure seekers who trust the vision and take the leap will help make history.'
Tickets went on sale in February
,
with packages ranging from $1,400 to $1.1 million, but
the new festival quickly ran into problems.
Fyre Festival 2 was initially set for Isla Mujeres, another Mexican tourist hot spot near Cancún. But a tourism official for the island said the event didn't exist, and a Facebook page for the location said no permits for such a festival were approved, either.
Organizers said in March they had moved the location
to Playa del Carmen, and a luxury hotel there confirmed a partnership with Fyre to The Post. However, no lineup of performers has been announced, raising speculation about whether the event was real.
Then, in April, officials with Playa del Carmen disputed claims of the festival being held there. But McFarland said that he had conversations with the local government about the event, sharing a timeline of events on the Fyre Festival's Instagram page. 'All media reports suggesting our team has not been working with the government of PDC are simply inaccurate and based on misinformation,' the page read.

McFarland has yet to comment on the postponed festival or say if it will be rescheduled. As of Thursday morning, the festival's website still showed the event as set for May 30 in Playa del Carmen, but a link to buy tickets wasn't working.
A merchandise page was still selling $70 T-shirts that say 'Fyre Festival 2 is real.'

Watch the scary moment Katy Perry gets ambushed, startled by rogue fan on stage

The one that got away. Katy Perry was ambushed by a rogue fan who found his way onto the stage during her 'Lifetimes' tour this week. The scary incident occurred on Monday night as the 40-year-old singer was performing her hit song 'Hot N Cold' during a concert in Sydney, Australia. Perry appeared visibly shaken during the startling encounter, and she quickly grabbed her guitar and spun away from the stage crasher immediately after he put his arm around her shoulders. 'Well, there's never going to be another show like it, so just enjoy it, Sydney,' Perry said into the microphone as the dancing fan was grabbed by security, per a video of the incident shared to X. 'What the hell is going on?!' the 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)' singer then shouted as the interloper was finally escorted off the stage. Although Perry kept her cool during the incident and continued her performance without a hitch, fans of the pop star rushed to social media to express their shock regarding the 'very dangerous' incident. 'A very dangerous moment,' one person tweeted. 'Security to be fired, especially the one who was supposed to guard the entrance to the stage. Katy's bodyguard was the first. This could have ended really badly!' 'Why did he think that would be a good idea to assault an artist like that?' commented another fan. 'Katy Perry took it in a professional way, thank god she is ok.' 'Katy handled that like a pro – chaos on stage, and she still kept it cool,' added a third. 'Iconic energy. Now that's how you own the moment.' However, other viewers claimed that the incident was 'staged.' 'Staged,' one skeptical person tweeted. 'So she can go viral.' 'Honestly, this looks staged,' added a second person. 'And I hope it is because if it's real, that's seriously worrying.' The Post has reached out to Perry's rep for comment. Meanwhile, that wouldn't be the first time that the 'Firework' hitmaker suffered a startling mishap mid-concert. On May 17, during a show in Las Vegas, Perry's bejeweled bra almost popped completely off during her performance of 'Part of Me.' 'Oh s–t,' Perry said into the microphone during the wardrobe malfunction, 'my bra is gonna come off.' 'Put my bra back on, Patrick,' she joked after calling over one of her assistants. 'Sorry, guys, you didn't pay that much.' Shortly before her wardrobe malfunction, the 'I Kissed a Girl' songstress 'scolded' a fan for messaging her husband, Orlando Bloom. 'I know why you're here,' she began. 'Listen, if you keep DM-ing my man… you've been doing it for months, ever since the residency. You didn't come to see me play.' 'If you keep on DM-ing my man, I'm gonna have you removed,' Perry continued. 'Seriously, get your own life. I'm his wife. I don't want it. I'm his.' 'He don't want you, Kyle. I'm his wife,' she added. 'I'm his, he's mine… stay the f–k away!' It was later revealed that Perry's shocking remarks were scripted and part of the transition into her next song, the 2024 single 'I'm His, He's Mine.'

LA Riots Hand Republicans Script for Midterms

The masked man on the motorcycle, the one who waved a Mexican flag in front of a torched car as Los Angeles police stood by, will soon be famous. His identity remains unknown, his image iconic - but for all the wrong reasons. Republicans will replay the clip again and again in campaign ads ahead of the midterms. "This lawlessness is exactly what Americans rejected in 2024," said Michael Whatley, chairman of the Republican National Committee. "While Democrats sow chaos, Republicans stand as the party of law and order." President Trump is delivering on his campaign promise to crack down on illegal immigration, Whatley told RealClearPolitics, and ahead of the midterms, his party "will continue to run on this winning message and finish the job for the American people." As National Guard were being deployed to quell violence in California, Republicans were mobilizing to capture and catalog video of looting, rioting, and violence. One RNC official told RCP they were struggling to capture the flood of content coming across cable news. "It was just non-stop," they said. "There was so much." That content from the LA riots will soon provide fodder for the contrast Republicans hope to paint in November of next year, illustrating the failed immigration policies they allege California Gov. Gavin Newsom now embodies. For his part, Newsom blames Trump for inflaming an already "combustible situation." Los Angeles became ground zero for the Trump administrations immigration crackdown Saturday when ICE agents launched a series of raids across the city. Protests followed. Some of the demonstrations have been peaceful. The ones getting wall-to-wall news coverage, however, were not. Demonstrators hurled rocks, firework shells, and Molotov cocktails at police. Vandalism and looting ensued, prompting Trump to order 2,000 National Guardsmen to the city without the approval of the California governor. Newsom quickly condemned the move as a "blatant abuse of power" that puts the nation on a path to authoritarianism. "Trump is pulling a military dragnet all across Los Angeles," Newsom said in a speech delivered from an LA studio Tuesday, as the city remains under a curfew ordered by Mayor Karen Bass. "Well beyond his stated intent to just go after violent and serious criminals, his agents are arresting dishwashers, gardeners, day laborers and seamstresses." "California may be first, but it clearly wont end here," the governor said. "Other states are next. Democracy is next." The White House already saw the riots as an opportunity to paint Democrats as hapless in the face of lawlessness. After the governors speech, they were overjoyed to have that fight with Newsom. "Democrats are not even choosing the 20 on 80-20 issues," a White House official told RCP. "Theyre choosing the 10 on 90-10 issues." The situation in Los Angeles could be perilous for Democrats. Newsom has tried to differentiate a violent mob from lawful demonstrators, warning on social media that those "who take advantage of Trumps chaos" will be held accountable, while encouraging those who are "protesting peacefully." The White House, meanwhile, sees nothing but anarchy and is considering invoking the Insurrection Act, a law that grants the president authority to deploy the military on U.S. soil. Asked if he was considering it, Trump told RCP Tuesday in the Oval Office, "We will see." Republicans are betting that voters have already made up their minds. "AI couldnt generate better imagery," said Jesse Hunt, a GOP strategist and former communications director at the National Republican Senatorial Campaign. Trump won the general election, in large part, in reaction to the lax immigration policies of the Biden administration, Hunt told RCP, and the mob violence in LA will capture voter attention ahead of the midterms. "It paints a real picture of which side voters can choose to be on," he said, "public servants enforcing U.S. law in an American city or a violent mob waving another countrys flag." The National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee has already cut a digital spot that will serve as a template for the midterms. Posted on social media Tuesday, the video splices together clips of rock-hurling rioters in the smoke-filled streets of LA with soundbites from Democrats defending the demonstrations as "mostly peaceful protests." The Congressional Leadership Fund, the super PAC aligned with Speaker Mike Johnson and the largest spender in House campaigns, has already argued this week that the riots roiling Los Angeles will continue to spread to other cities. When confronted with that chaos, the group predicted, "Americans will vote accordingly." A new survey commissioned by CLF, obtained by RCP, and conducted by Trump pollster Tony Fabrizio, provides the reasoning for their confidence. The polling of key congressional districts found that on illegal immigration and deportations, 57% favor "hiring nearly 40,000 additional ICE and border patrol agents to address illegal immigration as well as drug and human trafficking." The Republican survey also showed 68% of voters favor funding for the military to support law enforcement "in their fight against drug cartels." The Trump administration remains convinced that the public is on their side. "They are incredibly out of touch with what the vast majority of Americans support," a White House official said of Democrats, telling RCP, "We are going on offense and backing them into the corner of supporting dangerous criminal illegal aliens, violent rioters, and lawless chaos." College students, agitators and a Hamptons brat among 86 arrested at rowdy NYC anti-ICE protest

They shouldn't have trouble making bail. Cops cuffed 86 demonstrators at a rowdy anti-ICE rally in Lower Manhattan Tuesday, among them the daughter of a Moroccan actor, a self-proclaimed poet from an upscale college and a coed whose family owns a posh home in the Hamptons, The Post has learned. 'My sense is, the vast majority of the 2,500 people that were there, were there to protest peacefully,' NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said on Fox 5 News. 'There was a smaller group of a few hundred where we did have to make arrests. Some of them were looking for trouble.' The protest in Foley Square against deportation arrests by federal immigration agents began peacefully but grew increasingly violent shortly after 5 p.m., with the mob hurling bottles at cops and throwing traffic cones into traffic, an NYPD spokesperson said. Of the 86 who were charged, 52 were issued summonses for disorderly conduct and other minor charges, while 34 were arrested and charged with more serious crimes, including felony assault. Among those busted was Vega Gullette, a 19-year-old student at Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers who describes herself as 'a Moroccan-American writer, artist, and lover of junk.' The teen, who was charged with attempted assault in the second-degree and obstructing government administration, is the daughter of Sean Gullette, an actor, screenwriter and director whose credits include the Darren Aronofsky films 'Requiem for a Dream' and 'Pi.' Gullette had a group of friends show up to her court hearing on Wednesday in a show of support, some of whom draped themselves in keffiyehs, which are associated with pro-Palestine political movements. Also among those charged was Rachel Schreiber, 22, of Brooklyn, who is facing resisting arrest, reckless endangerment and attempted assault charges in the melee. She smiled when she saw the large group of friends, some of whom wore masks, who showed up for her hearing in Manhattan criminal court. 'So many,' she said to herself while she walked out of the courtroom. Records show her parents own a $3 million home in Westhampton Beach. 'I'm not giving any reaction,' her mother told The Post Wednesday. 'I'm not ready to talk about this with the press.' Some of the pinched protesters are no strangers to Big Apple demonstrations. Robert Mills, 40, who was charged with reckless endangerment and issued a disorderly conduct citation in Tuesday's scuffle, was charged with obstructing governmental administration in April during an anti-Israeli protest in Brooklyn, the Jewish News Syndicate reported. Tabitha Howell, 40 — who was cited for disorderly conduct — was among those injured when a crazed Queens woman drove into a Manhattan Black Lives matter protest in 2020. 'It's one thing to face physical recovery,' Howell, who said she suffered five bulging discs in her back and a traumatic brain injury in the incident, told The Post at the time. 'It's another to try to process what happened mentally and emotionally.' Meanwhile, Tisch and Mayor Eric Adams gave assurances this week that the city will not devolve in to chaos like Los Angeles, where ICE agents sparked outbreaks of violence that required the National Guard to step in to try to restore peace. 'Watching what was going on in California, I spent the weekend on the phone with our federal partners in New York City — the head of the FBI in New York, federal protective services, homeland security investigations,' Tisch told MSNBC's 'Morning Joe.
