DAFM and Coillte to host conference on homegrown timber building

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and Coillte, will host a conference in October focusing on increasing the use of Irish homegrown timber in construction. The event, titled 'Build with Wood: From Policy to Practice', will be held on October 15 at Avondale Forest Park, Co. Wicklow. The event is also being co-organised by the Timber in Construction Steering Group, which was established in November 2023 to explore ways to scale up the use of timber in construction. The event is set to be opened by a welcome address from architect and broadcaster Dermot Bannon, which will be followed by an address from Minister of State for forestry Michael Healy-Rae. Following the minister, Coillte CEO Imelda Hurley will address the conference. The meeting will also hear from private architects and representatives from the construction and engineering sectors; as well as personnel from Forest Industries Ireland and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. The topics to be covered include developing guidance for mass timber in Ireland; the carbon impact of modelling timber use; decarbonising construction; and turning policy into practice. The meeting follows the publication earlier this month of the timber construction in Ireland research report, 'Pioneering Research and Innovation for timber and wood-based products in Ireland'. Notable examples of research featured in the booklet include: SAOLWood – Sustainable Construction and Lifecycle Assessment of Irish Timber; MODCONS – Modular Mass Timber Buildings for the Circular Economy; WoodProps – Wood Properties for Ireland Programme. SAOLWood is creating Ireland's first national database to track the environmental footprint of Irish wood products across their full life cycle. MODCONS focuses on the design, development and experimental testing of a sustainable modular timber using prefabrication to speed up construction, reduce waste and improve building performance. Related Stories WoodProps, meanwhile, is a national programme helping define the structural capabilities of Irish timber species, especially Sitka spruce. Launching that report, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon said: "The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is a key funder of forestry and timber research. "My department funds this research in order to produce the knowledge, insights and technology needed to address evolving strategic, policy and industry needs. "This investment in research and innovation reflects the continued government support for utilising our forest resource and creating a renewable building environment," Minister Heydon.

€20k/acre AMV set for auction of 90ac Kildare stud farm

Coming under the hammer on Wednesday, September 17, at Goff's Bloodstock Sales, is a superb 90-acre stud farm (the estate of the late well-known trainer Kevin Prendergast) in the heart of Ireland's premier equestrian country. The property is at Friarstown, Co Kildare — about 5km from Kildare town, 6km from the M7 and 7km from Newbridge. 'The thoroughbred industry and supporting services are all on your doorstep here,' says selling agent Andrew Nolan. 'The Goffs Bloodstock Sales complex is a mere 20-minute drive away. And the Turf Club, Irish National Stud, Thoroughbred Remedies Ireland, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, Horse Racing Ireland and major veterinary clinics are all within easy reach.' Also nearby are the racecourses of The Curragh, Punchestown and Naas, and the lands are typical of the area — a superb large, level parcel of land which includes a yard and residence. 'The lands are laid out in four divisions and are currently all in grass,' adds Mr Nolan. 'The property has frontage onto the L3003 [Rathangan Road] and is approached via electric gates. The dormer house and outbuildings. "In total, there are 13 boxes, a three-span hay barn with lean-to structure and a two-span hay barn with associated outbuildings… there's a tack room, feed room, lunging ring, a four-bay covered horse walker and a loading bay.' The layout of the property is such that all the buildings are close to the roadside, with the lands extending beyond. The house is a dormer residence offering 130sq m of living space and is in need of modernisation. There is a good level of interest in this large farm at the heart of Ireland's most important area for agricultural production and the bloodstock industry. 'You could do anything with this land,' says Mr Nolan. 'You could run a breeding operation for thoroughbreds or revert to drystock or tillage … We had a similar farm on the other side of The Curragh, which eventually sold to a local farmer.' The AMV of €1.80m (€20,000/acre) should encourage plenty of bids on the day for this sizeable chunk of Irish agri-equestrian heritage.
