South Australian Derby could be next for American Wolf after VRC St Leger win

News.com.au25-04-2025

One giant leap could springboard to a Group 1 win for American Wolf after Friday's VRC St Leger at Flemington.
Co-trainer Natalie Young put next Saturday's Group 1 South Australian Derby on American Wolf's agenda after he outslugged Litzdeel in the Anzac Day feature.
American Wolf won a maiden at Ballarat before stepping up sharply in class in the Listed VRC St Leger, answering Young and co-trainer Trent Busuttin's questions about the son of Tivaci seeing out the 2800m trip.
'Sometimes you just have to throw these horses into a bit of a deep end,' Young said.
'Third-up after 2800(m), sometimes you just have to have a crack at it.
'He had a beautiful run, he sat out the back third-last and relaxed beautifully.
' John Allen just rode him an absolute treat. He was tough late.'
Bookmakers promoted American Wolf to $15 in South Australian Derby betting after his VRC St Leger win.

Young said American Wolf would have every chance to prove to connections he could handle the eight-day back-up into the SA Derby.
'He's going on the right path and winning here at Flemington means he's going to be a three, four or $5 favourite and hopefully he can take the back-up,' Young said.
'If he pulls up well, eats up well and does all the usual things, they're only three once.
'You don't have to do much with them. He's run 28 (00m) today and he'll run 25 (00m) next week so you've just got to tick them over basically.
'He's on the up and he's still coming up to his peak.'
Earlier, Highvol lived up to trainer Nick Ryan's opinion of him with his debut win in the Listed Anzac Day Stakes.

Jamie Melham steered Highvol ($9) to a determined win over favoured runners Stay Cosmic ($4.40 equal favourite) and Just Kick ($5.50).
'From day dot, we've always had a big opinion of him,' Ryan's representative Damian Kefford said.
'Nick decided, 'look, we'll roll the dice here'. Nick always thought he'd be a 1400m-plus horse.
'It is a big task to come to Flemington for your first start over 1400m, but the raps that we had on him were warranted today.'

‘Never seen a better jockey': James McDonald closes in on Miracle Malcolm Johnston's mark

Hall of Fame jockey Malcolm Johnston is adamant James McDonald will claim his national riding record for most Group 1 wins in a season – it's just a matter of when. And Johnston also declared McDonald could ride an unthinkable 200 Australian Group 1 winners before the end of his riding career if he remains based in Sydney. These were Johnston's comments when interviewed by Racenet as McDonald closed in on his 16 major race winners in a season – a national record that has stood unchallenged since 1979-80. Just a week after trainer Chris Waller set a national record with 19 Group 1 winners for a season, McDonald is also poised to rewrite racing history at Eagle Farm. McDonald has ridden 15 Australian Group 1 winners this season and can equal or even break Johnston's longstanding record at Eagle Farm on Saturday when he partners Rothfire in the $3m Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) and Hidden Achievement in the $1m JJ Atkins (1600m). 'Records are made to be broken and J-Mac has the opportunity to set a new mark on Saturday that will probably stand the test of time,'' Johnston said. 'If he doesn't break my record this weekend then I'm sure he will one day – if it is not this year it will be in the years to come because he is going to break all the riding records.'' But like the time when Australian cricket captain Mark 'Tubby' Taylor decided to declare on 334 not out so he wouldn't surpass the legendary Sir Donald Bradman's highest Test score, Johnston is hoping McDonald equals but doesn't break his national riding record. • J-Mac confirmed for Rothfire's incredible Stradbroke bid 'I'd be very proud to share the record with J-Mac because I've never seen a better jockey,'' McDonald said. 'He's as good as Darren (Beadman), as good as Mick (Dittman), as good as Ronnie (Quinton). 'If James gets to 16 Group 1 wins then when you look at the replays of his next couple of Group 1 rides that will be me swinging off their tails. 'But to be fair, J-Mac has had a phenomenal season. He didn't have a Kingston Town like I had to win six Group 1 races in a season for me but he did have Via Sistina to help him.'' McDonald rode Via Sistina to win five Group 1 races during the season but did miss another two of the mighty mare's majors. The jockey chose to rode Fangirl in the Winx Stakes only to finish third behind Via Sistina and then he was in Sydney for Epsom Day but missed riding a Group 1 winner while the champion mare won the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington. But McDonald's outstanding 2024-25 season has also included six international Group 1 wins to increase his Australian tally of majors to 92 and his overall career record to 119 Group 1 wins. • Johnston said it was remarkable to think McDonald was still only 32 years of age and rode his first Australian Group 1 winner on Scarlett Lady just 14 years ago. 'If J-Mac stays in Sydney, he could ride 200 Group 1 winners before he retires – and I'm not counting his international wins,'' Johnston said. 'I hope James does stay here because we are privileged to watch one the greatest ever do his thing each week but I believe he will eventually go to Hong Kong. 'Once he breaks 'Ollie's' record (125 Australian Group 1 wins and 129 in total) then I suspect he will consider going to Hong Kong because he might be looking for a new challenge. 'But he has the best of both worlds at the moment because he can go and ride in Hong Kong when he wants to and he still gets the best of the rides in Australia.''

‘He's going to call it a day': Bombshell Max Verstappen rumour

Max Verstappen has been sensationally tipped to quit Red Bull at the end of the season by a former team mechanic. The Dutchman has won four drivers' titles in a row and is hunting for a fifth this year - which would see him match a feat only achieved by Michael Schumacher in Formula One history, The Sun reports. However, Verstappen has fallen 49 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri amid huge performance struggles with the Red Bull machinery this season. Verstappen has continued winning races despite the issues and even the power struggle which hit the team last year. He has been linked with an exit from the Red Bull garage, with a team transfer to the likes of Mercedes or Aston Martin. But ex-Red Bull mechanic Calum Nicholas believes Verstappen - who became a dad for the first time last month - could quit F1 entirely, if he wins a fifth World Drivers Championship. Speaking on Lucas Stewart's YouTube channel as he played a round of golf, Nicholas was asked how many titles Verstappen would win in his career. He gave his answer before revealing what he thought lay ahead for the 27-year-old. 'Five. I think Max is going to win the Drivers' this year, and then I think he's going to call it a day,' he said. Despite his answer, the mechanic insisted he didn't 'know anything' extra about Verstappen's career plans. 'To not back Max is just like lunacy, I think. The guy is just really really good,' he said. 'Not in terms of just his technical skill and his talent, but I've watched Max grow into this guy that can do everything. 'He does everything well now.' Verstappen's last race win this season came at the Imola Grand Prix on May 18. He finished fourth at the Monaco Grand Prix a week later before inexplicably ramming his car into George Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix. That earned him a 10-second penalty - demoting him from P5 to P10 - and three penalty points on his licence to put him on the brink of a race ban. Verstappen has 11 out of 12 points needed to earn a race ban across the 12-month rolling system for the penalty points. He will need to be on his best behaviour at the Canadian and Austrian Grand Prix to avoid a ban in the following race before he sees two penalty points expire on June 30. SunSport looked at five potential replacements for Verstappen if he is banned from competing for one weekend. Names include impressive F1 rookie Isack Hadjar, Red Bull flop Liam Lawson and F2 prodigy Arvid Lindblad, who recently raced against Leeds United stars on the Elland Road pitch.
