Calls come for Marcus Ashcroft and Brett Kirk Medals to be renamed amid ‘unfair advantage'
The medal is given to the best player on the ground in the QClash between the Lions and Suns.
It is named after Marcus Ashcroft, who grew up on the Gold Coast before going on to play 318 games for Brisbane, including three premierships.
Post-AFL career, Ashcroft spent close to 10 years at the Suns, first as an assistant coach in 2008 before being promoted to football manager the following year ahead of the Suns' first season in 2011.
Ashcroft now has two sons, Will and Levi, who play for the Lions.
The brothers were among the Lions' best in Sunday night's win over the Suns, racking up a staggering 63 possessions between them.
Will won the medal named after his dad, but Hutchison believes the siblings have extra motivation to perform well.
He also noted that best on ground in the Sydney derby gets a medal named after Brett Kirk, who is currently an assistant coach at the Swans.
'Marcus Ashcroft, great respect in the game, but in reality he's got two sons who shared 63 possession who will fight to try to win the dad's medal in their name. It is bordering on an unfair advantage for Brisbane, the extra motivation it drives,' he said on The Agenda Setters.
'Brett Kirk is an assistant coach (at Sydney) giving out this one in the Swans-Giants game. Is it time that both clubs moved to a broader narrative.'
Fellow panellist Kane Cornes agreed.
'That might be one of your great takes. That is a good take. They have got to change the name, you can't have that as the Ashcroft and Kirk medal. He's an assistant coach handing over the medal to one of his players. That's a good pickup,' he said.
Caroline Wilson pointed out that Ashcroft was a three-time premiership player at Brisbane, but also held a key role at the Suns during their formative years.
Hutchison also noted how they changed the name of the medal in Western Australia from Ross Glendinning Medal to Glendinning-Allan to acknowledge Fremantle.
'If you're the Suns, you say 'now the two kids have arrived, it is time for a reset'. It happened in Western Australia. A motivational factor for one team and not the other on game day,' he said.
Cornes made a comparison to the Showdown Medal, which doesn't carry the name of any former player.
'It's like calling the Showdown Medal the (Mark) Ricciuto Medal. Why would a Port player want to win that medal?' He said.

In late 2021, after Laming had announced his impending retirement from politics, the AEC launched proceedings against the MP over three posts made on the 'Redland Hospital: Let's fight for fair funding' Facebook page before the previous election in 2019, which the regulator argued had lacked proper authorisation of political links. Initially, the Federal Court imposed three penalties totalling $20,000 on Laming. The AEC appealed that decision, and a three-judge bench ruled that Laming had contravened the laws every time each post was viewed, doubling his fine to $40,000. Laming successfully appealed that decision, with the High Court agreeing with the initial judgment, which found that he had breached electoral laws each time he posted the offending material. The majority ruling focused on one specific section of the Electoral Act, with Justice James Edelman dissenting in a judgment that flexed his relative youth by mentioning TikTok. So in other words, a win for Laming, even if the original $20,000 fine remains in place. And separately, he remains on the hook for $10,000 in unpaid parliamentary expenses from 2019, after losing a Federal Court challenge last year.

Fremantle holding fire on celebrating Dockers success
Dockers fans may have AFL finals in their eyes but the City of Fremantle is still hedging its bets. The Dockers rose to the top four — and a double chance in finals — after holding out against Port Adelaide last weekend. The city council recently asked staff to formalise celebrating the Dockers' participation in the AFL and AFLW finals series and grand final — as well as other local sport successes — as part of its draft economic strategy 2025-2030. But the competition for September finals action is so tight that the Dockers could yet finish outside of the top eight if they don't maintain winning form and the port city's local government is not yet ready to commit to planning a party. Past celebrations of the AFL Dockers making the finals included painting the median of the cappuccino strip purple, live-streaming the game on a big screen outdoors and painting the Fremantle Football Club's logo on the grass slope of the Walyalup Civic Centre. 'The race for top eight is as tight as it's ever been,' The Nightly sport opinion writer Sophie Gannon said. 'Friday night's game against Brisbane is as big of a game that this club can remember. 'A win would see Freo in contention for a top four place, but a loss will leave them in a position where they rely on winning against Bulldogs at Marvel to ensure they even make the top eight. 'Although having won 11 out of the past 12 games, Freo must be careful as they're making a habit of playing three average quarters and then making a strong comeback in the fourth, doing this five out of the past six weeks. 'They'll need to play all four quarters to contend against the best in the league.' Fremantle's finals hopes last year died in a defeat to Port Adelaide in the last game of the season after Carlton's dramatic loss to St Kilda had left the door open for them to make the top eight. Another opportunity for partying lies with Fremantle's AFLW side, who are expected to be genuine premiership contenders this year. Simon Goodwin speaks out on sole reason for ‘shock' sacking

Premiership coach Simon Goodwin has opened up on his exit from the Melbourne Football Club for the first time since last Tuesday's shock announcement to sack him after nine years at the helm. Goodwin, who is one of just four people to ever lead the Demons to a V/AFL flag, spoke to Fox Footy's AFL 360 eight days on from his departure at Melbourne. 'It was a shock, there's no doubt about that. I was disappointed that they'd come to that decision — but you accept that position,' Goodwin began. 'Do I 100% think that I was the right person to carry this team forward? Yes, because I've done it before ... but that's the decision the board made, and I accept that decision. But as I said, I'm sure the board went through a thorough process.' 'That was the (only) reason I got; that they needed a new voice.' The two-time Adelaide premiership player had a decorated career across his 275-game career, and has now spent well over a decade as a coach in the AFL system — making him a prime target for all clubs looking ahead to 2026. Seven's Mitch Cleary revealed on Wednesday evening that GWS have reached out to Goodwin in regards to a role next year. 'There's certainly been challenges, and things that all football clubs need to work on — and Melbourne's no different. But if you walk through the doors at training at Casey Fields with those players, the environment's healthy, alive and well ... and that's the biggest part of your program to get right. 'For the next coach, I think it's set-up incredibly well. I'd be incredibly excited by the group that they've got available to them.'
