No service on Singapore's Sengkang-Punggol LRT line due to power fault

SINGAPORE: Train services on the Sengkang-Punggol LRT line have halted due to a power fault on Friday (Aug 15) morning.
Free regular bus services are available from Sengkang Bus Interchange and bus stops near designated stations, said SBS Transit.
Free bridging bus services have also been activated, said the transport operator in a Facebook post at 8.55am.
Commuters were advised to follow directional signs to get to the boarding point for these bus services and approach staff members if they needed help.
Edwin Tan, 34, was travelling from his home near Meridian LRT station in Punggol to Dhoby Ghaut MRT station at 8.45am, when he was told there was no LRT service.
'I saw people coming down from the platform at Meridian LRT station, and a fellow commuter told me it is not working,' said the human resources assistant.
He had to hop on a regular bus service to Punggol MRT station to continue his journey to Dhoby Ghaut. Other affected passengers squeezed onto the buses, as they were rushing to work, he said.
'I am frustrated and disillusioned. But this was not as bad as the first time around, as the MRT is working fine,' added Tan.
Netizens who left comments on Facebook were largely disappointed at the disruption. Facebook user Debbie Michelle Aurelia, for instance, said that after the train had stalled, the announcement to alight was made only after more than five minutes.
Others touched on how it was the second time in three days that service on the Sengkang-Punggol LRT line has been disrupted by a power fault.
On Aug 12, operations on the line stopped for about one hour in the afternoon.
The breakdown was later found to have been caused by a flashover - an unintended electrical discharge - in one of the voltage transformers used to regulate the power supply, which led to a power trip.

Malaysia's curry puff climbs one rank up to 4th-Best Pastry in the World 2025 by TasteAtlas

In 2024, karipap ranked fifth, edging out iconic bakes like France's croissant and Egypt's kunafa. TasteAtlas has ranked Malaysia's beloved karipap as the world's fourth-best savoury pastry, up one spot from last year. Photo: Edited via Canva Golden, flaky and filled with comforting spice — few snacks capture Malaysia's culinary soul quite like the curry puff. From roadside stalls to family kitchens, this humble pastry is a constant companion to teatime rituals. Now, it has once again gained fresh international recognition. Food travel guide TasteAtlas, has crowned Malaysia's beloved karipap the fourth-best savoury pastry in the world, one rank higher than last year. According to TasteAtlas, the curry puff — or karipap — earned fourth place in its 'Top 50 Best Savory Pastries' (August 2025 edition) with a score of 4.5 out of 5 stars. 'Karipap or curry puff is a small, deep-fried or baked pastry shell filled with thick chicken and potatoes curry. It is believed that the flavourful snack was invented by the Malays from the Malay peninsula and parts of Sumatra and Borneo,' the portal said. TasteAtlas praised the pastry's textural balance, calling it 'crispy on the outside and warm and tender on the inside.' The site also highlighted its versatility and enduring popularity across Southeast Asia. In 2024, karipap ranked fifth, edging out iconic bakes like France's croissant and Egypt's kunafa. A year earlier, it was placed much further down the list at 28th. What makes the karipap stand out is its adaptability. 'It is a popular breakfast item or an afternoon snack which can be found at numerous stores, bars and markets. Because of its simplicity and flavour, karipap quickly became popular outside Malaysia, especially in Thailand and Singapore. 'Today there are numerous versions of karipap, so instead of potato and chicken curry, it can be filled with various other ingredients such as tuna, sardines and beef rendang. 'Crispy and flaky on the exterior, hot and soft in the interior, karipap is a snack that remains a staple of Southeast Asian cuisine,' the site added. This year, the Malaysian classic sits alongside other celebrated pastries: Bosnia's burek and Bulgaria's banitsa sas sirene, both scoring 4.5 stars and Serbia's pazarske mantije, which leads the list at 4.7 stars. For Malaysians, though, no ranking is needed to affirm its place at the heart of local food culture. Whether bought from a 'pasar malam', enjoyed in air-conditioned cafes or freshly made by a grandmother's hands, the karipap continues to be a flavourful emblem of heritage and everyday joy. Pleading for federal funding, Chow warns congestion from Penang mega projects could topple governments

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 18 — Penang said today that resolving the rising traffic congestion issues in the state is important for the state to remain competitive, not only in the eyes of tourists but also investors. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state will be facing the 'nightmare of traffic jams' as a result of the construction of mega projects in the upcoming years. 'Some politicians will feel pressured as it was proven that when mega projects lead to massive traffic congestion, it can even be the downfall of any government. 'So, do not think it is not important,' he said in his speech at launch of the City Competitiveness Master Plan here. He said the proposed Mount Erskine underpass project, which does not cost a lot, is yet to be implemented due to financial constraints even after the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has acquired lands and enforce evictions for the project. Chow said Penang currently has ongoing mega projects such as the LRT project and the Juru-Sungai Dua Elevated Highway. 'However, pending the completion of those mega projects, we hope the federal government will grant funding, under [the 13th Malaysia Plan], for us to implement small-scale projects that could bring about positive impact in managing traffic conditions in certain locations,' he said. He also hoped that traffic management plans during the construction of the mega projects will be implemented effectively and efficiently. The chief minister said Penang needs infrastructure projects to resolve its traffic jams as mobility has become a main issue. 'Even with durians and nasi kandar to attract visitors, when they are trapped in traffic jams for an hour to two hours here, it will be a great disincentive for anyone to travel to Penang,' he said. He related how last week a major investor, who was scouting for investment locations in Batu Kawan, was trapped in a jam for two hours when travelling from Ipoh to Penang — but luckily this did not affect any investment decision. He said it is not good for foreign investors to have an image of Penang as a place constantly locked in traffic congestion.

Negri Sembilan to revive Sg Timun firefly sanctuary

There are only four firefly sanctuaries in Malaysia, including this one in Kuala Selangor. Now Negri Sembilan wants to restore the sanctuary in Sungai Timun to attract tourists. — Filepic THE Negri Sembilan government plans to revive the long-dormant firefly sanctuary in Sungai Timun as a flagship eco-tourism attraction ahead of Visit Negri Sembilan Year 2026. State tourism, arts and culture committee chairman Nicole Tan Lee Koon said the initiative aimed to restore the area's natural charm and strengthen the state's tourism appeal. 'Malaysia has only four firefly sanctuaries, in Pahang, Sabah, Selangor and Negri Sembilan. 'We must take advantage of this by redeveloping our own sanctuary, which has been inactive since the Covid-19 pandemic,' she said. Tan was speaking to reporters after launching the Publicity and Public Participation Programme for the Rembau Local Plan Draft 2035 (Replacement), reports Bernama. She said the state was also exploring collaboration with the Melaka government to boost cross-border tourism and visitor traffic. 'Melaka has the River Cruise, so their tourists could be brought to Sungai Timun for firefly-watching. We will also engage local boat operators to assess how best to restart the activity,' she said. Tan also announced plans to expand the Jejak Warisan (Heritage Trail) programme, featuring a trekking route from Kampung Miku in Rembau to Seri Menanti in Kuala Pilah, passing through 10 tributaries. She said trained mountain guides would lead the activity, offering historical and cultural narratives to enrich the visitor experience.
