INDIA bloc's Vice Presidential candidate B Sudershan Reddy on Wednesday said that he is happy about his nomination and does not look at the polls as 'Radhakrishnan versus Reddy'. Sudershan Reddy told ANI, "I am happy about my nomination. If it was an unpleasant one, why would I undertake this journey and proceed further?"
Further, he said that the Vice Presidential elections are not a 'Radhakrishnan versus Reddy' contest and there is scope for party whips in the polls.
"It is not Radhakrishnan versus Reddy. I don't think even Radhakrishnan treats it as 'Reddy versus Radhakrishnan'. At present, there are two candidates. We do not know there may be a third candidate tomorrow. Since it is not a general election, in that sense, the Vice President of India is to be elected by the members of the parliament. Therefore, there is no question of any whip by political parties asking that you vote for this man, or you don't vote for that man. It is the wisdom and their individual assessment about the relative merits and demerits of the candidates," he said.
Addressing Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge's "ideological fight" remarks, he said that the INDIA bloc and the NDA represent two different ideologies.
He said, "What's wrong with this? If not NDA, the dominant political party in India represents a particular ideology. There is nothing new. It is not hidden. Kharge believes in an entirely different ideology, therefore he made that statement. What is wrong with that statement?"
Earlier on Tuesday, Mallikarjun Kharge announced Reddy as the INDIA bloc's candidate for the VP elections. Kharge, in an X post, said, 'This Vice Presidential contest is an ideological battle. All Opposition parties have nominated Shri B. Sudershan Reddy garu as their joint candidate for the position of the Vice President of India.'
Rahul Gandhi also said that the Opposition is united in this "ideological battle".
"I warmly congratulate B Sudershan Reddy Garu on being nominated as the joint opposition candidate for the Vice President of India. A distinguished jurist and champion of justice, he represents the spirit of our Constitution - safeguarding people's rights, equality and our Democracy. We stand united in this ideological battle and wish him all the very best," Gandhi posted on X.
Meanwhile, Kharge said Reddy would file his nomination on August 21.
Justice B Sudershan Reddy, who served as Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 2007, retired in July 2011. He will contest against the NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan.
The Vice-Presidential election is scheduled for September 9, with counting on the same day.

However, a major trade imbalance has accompanied the growth; it has increased from $6.6 billion to $58.9 billion which is about nine times. So we need to address that urgently.' Jaishankar also outlined the key priorities for deepening bilateral economic ties, with a strong focus on easing trade barriers and boosting connectivity. Among the top agenda items were removal of tariff and non-tariff barriers, resolving logistics bottlenecks, and enhancing regional connectivity through major corridors such as the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), the Northern Sea Route, and the Chennai-Vladivostok maritime link. Jaishankar stressed the need to streamline payment mechanisms, finalise and execute the Programme of Economic Cooperation until 2030, and to accelerate negotiations for the India-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement, whose terms of reference were finalised during the session. Regular engagement between Indian and Russian businesses was also identified as critical to realising these goals. Noting that the meeting was taking place against the backdrop of a complex geopolitical environment, Jaishankar emphasised that despite global challenges, the leadership of both countries remains in close and regular contact, having met twice in person last year. 'They provide us wise and practical guidance to our Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. They had two 'in person' meetings last year and are personally committed to further advancing our strategic partnership,' he added. As the two sides convened to discuss economic cooperation, Jaishankar proposed several measures aimed at improving coordination and strengthening the partnership, underscoring the importance of enhanced efficiency in achieving shared goals. Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, currently on a three-day visit to Russia, met Russian scholars and think tank representatives to discuss India‑Russia relations and broader global issues. Jaishankar's visit comes against the backdrop of deteriorating ties between India and the US, following President Donald Trump's decision to double tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, which includes an additional 25% penalty for purchasing Russian crude oil. Taking to X, Jaishankar said, 'Pleased to interact with prominent scholars and think tank representatives of Russia. Discussed India-Russia relations, contemporary world geopolitics and India's viewpoint.' Later, the External Affairs Minister also paid tribute at Moscow's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Wednesday. The historic war memorial near the Kremlin is dedicated to the Soviet soldiers killed during World War II. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding the possibility of Putin visiting India later this year. On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin had called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and shared his insights about the recent meeting in Alaska with US President Donald Trump over the Ukraine conflict. PM Modi said India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. With inputs from agencies

Karnataka HC slams govt bike taxi ban, upholds operators' right to work

The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday came down on the state government's ban on bike taxis, calling its arguments against the service 'thin' and "legally untenable". Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru, heading the bench, noted that bike taxis are permitted in at least 13 states across the country and have emerged as a lawful and essential mode of urban transport. He observed that such services are not a luxury but a necessity, especially for affordable and efficient last-mile connectivity. Rejecting the government's stance that the Motor Vehicles Act prohibits bike taxis, the court said the State cannot deny livelihoods by citing the absence of a formal policy. A mere lack of regulation cannot be the basis for a blanket ban that deprives thousands of their right to work under Article 19(1)(g) of the Constitution, the Chief Justice remarked. The court also asked the Advocate General (AG) to ensure that no coercive or punitive action is taken against bike taxi operators in the interim. The AG informed the bench that the issue of framing a policy for bike taxis would be taken up at the 'highest level' of the government. The matter has now been posted for further hearing on September 22. The Chief Justice further questioned whether the State had made a conscious policy decision to exclude bike taxis, cautioning that such a move could not be justified without strong legal grounds. Welcoming the development, the Bike Taxi Welfare Association said it was committed to working with the government and stakeholders to ensure that the services operate safely, legally, and sustainably, benefiting both commuters and operators.
