I Am A Running Mate – K-drama Episode 2 Recap & Review

The Review Geek23-06-2025
Bow Out Before the Applause Fades
Episode 2 of I Am Running Mate starts 26 days before the student council elections. Se-hoon, along with Jeong-hui, is now Sang-hyeon's vice president.
Joon-Gyu, the teacher in charge of the elections, calls them for a meeting at the office. Since Sang-hyeon has a complete team with two running mates, he becomes candidate one. Won-dae has only one running mate, Yu-Gyeong, so Joon-Gyu gives him one week to find the boys' representative.
Se-hoon has not talked to Dae-won since he decided to change camps and has ignored his calls. Therefore, Se-hoon has a panic attack when they meet at the election office.
After school, Sang-hyeon and his friend Mi-na take Se-hoon out to have fun. Se-hoon decides to take Won-dae's call when he keeps calling while at the restaurant. He lies that he has always been close to Sang-hyeon, so he decided to become his running mate when asked.
After the meal, Sang-hyeon gifts Se-hoon with his smartwatch, which makes Se-hoon feel valued, believing that Sang-hyeon is a good person.
The following day at school, Yu-gyeong confronts Se-hoon about recommending her to Won-dae and then quitting on them. Se-hoon still chooses not to explain himself to her and insists he did not betray them.
Regarding the school choir, Se-hoon says that he will not quit since the choir and the elections are two different things. After Se-hoon leaves, Yu-gyeon notices that Ji-hun is popular among the students, so she asks him whether he wants to run for the school council.
At the end of the school day, Sang-hyeon suggests that Se-hoon have a face-to-face conversation to clear up any misunderstandings. Se-hoon listens in on a conversation between Won-dae and Yu-hyeon and realises that they are not bummed that he changed his mind.
Instead, Yu-Gyeon thinks his leaving was a good idea, and they already have other candidates to consider. After hearing this, Se-hoon decides not to talk to Won-dae.
Later, Se-hoon and Jeong-hui meet at Sang-hyeon's family restaurant to discuss campaign strategies. Sang-hyeon is impressed by their suggestions but worries that Se-hoon might share pledges similar to what he discussed with Won-dae.
Se-hoon assures them that his plans are different and even shares the screenshots of the messages exchanged between him and Won-dae as proof.
Twenty-four days to the election, a conflict arises between Gyeong-tae and Se-hoon. A demeaning picture of Yu-gyeong that Gyeong-tae had drawn in one of their choir lessons is found inside the music files.
Se-hoon had accidentally forgotten to remove the picture, and Gyeong-tae had written his name on the back of the photo. Luckily, Gyeong-tae does not get disciplinary action but a warning and apologises to Yu-Gyeong.
Gyeong-tae confronts Se-hoon for ratting him out and betraying Won-dae. Se-hoon gets a new nickname from the students: 'the rat', while Gyeong-tae becomes 'the pervert.'
During the elections for the choir captain, Won-dae suggests that Se-hoon should be the next captain. The reason why Won-dae suggests Se-hoon is that he arrives early at the choir to tidy up. He also says that the choir and the student council are different, so he does not hold a grudge even if they are rivals in the school elections.
The teacher invites Se-hoon to speak since no one else stands up to be his opponent. Won-dae tells Se-hoon that he has forgiven him when he goes up to give a speech, and the students find Won-dae favourable for suggesting a rival.
Se-hoon starts his speech by saying that he was ashamed that a simple reason like tidying up the choir room could get him to become a captain. He thinks it is unfair to other members with more serious roles, such as those who organise the music sheets, distribute snacks, those in charge of group messages, edit videos, and play the piano.
Se-hoon says that Won-dae's words are disappointing. Se-hoon adds that he is tone-deaf and unsuitable to become choir captain and nominates Yu Ui-jun, saying that he is loyal, a good singer, and has a passion for music.
Before his speech, Se-hoon received a message from Ji-hun telling him he had decided to join Won-dae as his running mate. At the end of the episode, Se-hoon writes a withdrawal application from the choir.
In his letter, he says that he is happy for the applause he got for his efforts, but he no longer wants to be applauded for mere efforts. He chooses to bow out before the applause fades.
The Episode Review
It is getting messy, and we are here for it. Won-dae and Yu-gyeong know exactly what they are doing by asking Ji-hun to join them. It is too early to tell if this will cause a rift between the friends, but time will tell. The thing about politics is that it is a dirty game.
To win, one must compromise a lot. We are just beginning, so the gloves are not yet out.
Won-dae tried to use Se-hoon during the choir elections to create a favourable image of himself. Se-hoon clocked it and handled it diplomatically, like a pro. We also have to take a moment and discuss Gyeong-tae's actions.
What he did to Yu-gyeong was wrong, and he should have received a severe punishment. It is annoying when such incidents are not handled with the severity they deserve. Yu-gyeong deserved better.

‘Exciting' new Channel 4 adventure show with huge cash prize and VERY familiar format set to air later this year

IN an era obsessed with Baby Boomers, Millennials and Gen Z, Channel 4 is giving us a TV show that cuts through the generational divides. This week, at the Edinburgh TV Festival, it is announcing Worlds Apart, a contest where a young and old person are paired up to complete a challenge on the road. 7 7 With more than a whiff of Race Across The World to the format, the teams of two will be sent to Japan, where there is a stronger emphasis on care and respect for the elderly. And if that wasn't enough of a feat, many of the contestants vying for the £50,000 cash prize will be Brits who have never travelled abroad before. Channel 4 commissioning editor Genna Gibson said: 'I've seen how generations can feel miles apart, but bring them together and you realise they share more than you think. 'Japan, with its ancient traditions and cutting-edge modern life is the perfect backdrop for their journeys.' Unsurprisingly, Worlds Apart is being made by South Shore, which was behind Freddie Flintoff 's young cricketers show Field Of Dreams on BBC One, and The Real Marigold Hotel, about veterans going on adventures, for BBC Two. Both shows endeavoured to shatter stereotypes about young and old. RO CAN'T RESIST A REVAMP TOP Boy creator Ronan Bennett is giving World War Two drama Army Of Shadows a bold new twist. His Channel 4 show was inspired by Jean-Pierre Melville's 1969 film and Joseph Kessel's seminal book. Ronan's project was unveiled last night at the Edinburgh TV Festival. The movie and novel dramatised the emergence of the French Resistance to the Nazi occupation of France. Ronan has created a new story of how resistance takes shape in a near-future authoritarian Britain. Under de facto American occupation, a former British army officer builds a covert cell from scratch as young recruits fight to reclaim their country. Ronan said: 'Democracy is in clear and present danger. 'This is a story about commitment, resistance and defiance in the coming age.' MOFFAT IN No10 DRAMA SHERLOCK and Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat is making a drama about life inside the Prime Minister's Downing Street home. Simply called Number 10, it will delve into what it is like to live in one of the most powerful places on Earth – an old terrace with mice and a lift that never works. 7 Channel 4 confirmed it was making the programme as the four-day Edinburgh TV Festival got under way yesterday. Sue Vertue, executive producer for Hartswood Films, which is creating the show for C4, said: 'We are excited to be working with Channel 4 on Number 10, which is a passion project for Steven. 'He says there are three famous doors in the world; he's done 221B Baker Street and the Tardis – now he's going to do the real one.' C4 have yet to announce the lead stars, but given the pedigree of Steven and Hartswood, its sure to attract huge names. GLENN IS STILL KILLING IT GLENN CLOSE plays a cantankerous killer in new Channel 4 drama Maud next year – having won the part thanks to her bunny-boiler role in film Fatal Attraction. The 1987 thriller saw her character Alex Forrest terrorise married lawyer Dan (Michael Douglas) after a one-night stand. Even though almost 40 years have passed, I'm told the film helped her bag the lead in the upcoming six-parter. Gwawr Lloyd, acting head of drama, at C4 said: 'Maud is a deliciously dark and daring drama and the amazing Glenn Close will bring a thrilling complexity to the role.' Filming for Maud, which is based on the short stories by Swedish writer Helene Tursten, will take place in London later this year. GAME SHOW TO RIVAL ALL OTHERS ITV doesn't appear to be hiding the similarities to Disney+ show Rivals in its teaser image for new game show, Nobody's Fool. Revealed at the start of the Edinburgh TV Festival, it sees two stars of the Jilly Cooper drama – Emily Atack and Danny Dyer – pose up as hosts. 7 7 7 And the pair are inside a stately home, just like the one in Rivals where lead character, saucy MP Rupert Campbell-Black, lives. While Emily looks quite different to her character Sarah Stratton, Danny's moustache and smart attire make him virtually indistinguishable from businessman Freddie Jones. Commenting on the show, due to air next year, Danny said: 'This is a blinder of a game show. 'Emily and I had a brilliant time making it and, much like the audience at home will be, we were kept guessing right until the very end.' Emily added: 'It's so exciting to be part of something this fresh.' Hmm, not entirely fresh though, is it?

Did you solve it? Are you a matcha for these tasty Japanese puzzles?

Earlier today I set you three puzzles from Tasty Japanese Morsels in Recreational Mathematics. Here they are again with solutions. 1. Squid game Two octopuses will face off in a boxing match. Each octopus requires eight gloves. (There is no distinction between left and right gloves.) The rules of octopus boxing stipulate that an octopus must only wear gloves of the same colour. There is a bag containing 16 red gloves and 16 green gloves. Find the minimum number of gloves that must be drawn at random from the bag to guarantee that the colours of the gloves of the two octopuses are (a) the same. (b) different. (c) either the same or different. Solution (a) 31 (b) 24 (c) 23 (a) If the lone glove left behind is red, both octopuses can wear green gloves. If the lone glove left behind is green, both octopuses can wear red gloves. (b) Imagine the first 16 choices are all of one colour. You will then need 8 of the other. (c) With 23 gloves, at least 7 are one colour (say red) and at least 8 are the other (say green). If there there exactly 7 red, then both octopuses can wear green. If there are more than 7 red, one can wear red and the other green. (Likewise, if at least 7 are green, and at least 8 are red, we get the same result.) 2. Sum-o wrestling. The diagram below represents a multiplication in which all but two of the digits have been replaced by stars. Reconstruct the computation. Solution Replace the stars with letters A to J. H must be 1 since F plus the carry of (D+G) must be 10 or larger. In fact, since the carry of D+E can at most be 1, it must be the case that H = 1, I = 0, and F = 9. We also know thanks to the given 1, that D + G = 11. Also, note that E = J Now to the multiplications. We know that 2 × AB = FG = ninety-somthing. So A = 4. And since C x AB = DE, we can deduce that C is 1 or 2. (If it was 3 or larger C x AB would have threedigits.) Suppose C = 1. Then AB = DE, which means that D = A = 4. However, we know G must be even, since G = 2 x B, so D + G is even, but this contradicts D + G = 11. Hence C = 2 and D = F = 9. It follows that J = E = G = 2 and B = 6. 3. Another boxing puzzle A restaurant uses 4 × 4 and 5 × 5 Bento boxes each divided into exactly eight square sections, as shown in the diagram below. The chef has asked you to create Bento boxes with rectangular boxes. Each Bento must still have eight square sections, even though, as in the example, the square sections do not have to be all of the same size. Design a 4 × 6 Bento box, a 3 × 9 Bento box, and a 5 × 6 Bento box. Solution Here's the 4 x 6 and the 3 x 9 And here's the 5 x 6 I hope you enjoyed these puzzles. I'll be back in two weeks. Arigato! Tasty Japanese Morsels in Recreational Mathematics is published by the American Mathematical Association. All the diagrams above are taken from the book. I've been setting a puzzle here on alternate Mondays since 2015. I'm always on the look-out for great puzzles. If you would like to suggest one, email me.

Horrifying moment tourist suffers severe injury after flaming jumping rope ‘barbeques' her neck

A shocking video shows the moment a woman was left with severe burns after a flaming skipping rope got wrapped around her neck at a full moon party. Karen Liseth, 22, went on a three-month trip to Thailand, and planned to go on to Bali, when she attended a celebration at a beach on the second week of the vacation. After a few drinks, she decided to 'do something crazy' - and asked her partner, Abed, now 29, to film her skipping with a flaming jump rope. Karen Liseth, 22, was left with severe burns after a flaming skipping rope got wrapped around her neck at a full moon party Everything was going to plan - until she tried to duck back out of the rope and it wrapped around her neck. Onlookers gasped in shock as the rope 'barbecued her' - leaving her with a sore and blackened neck. The business developer, from London, England, said she 'counts her blessings' the injury wasn't worse, because the rope could have hit her eyes or set her hair on fire. Karen said: 'I'd had a few drinks at the party and thought, "Why not do something crazy?" 'But then I completely miscalculated how to leave, and ran the other way - with the rope wrapping around my neck. 'I think I just felt adrenaline in the moment and laughed it off. I even had a few shots to help with the pain after!' Karen and her partner were visiting the Thai island of Ko Pha Ngan when they attended the party. She decided to be daring and skip with the rope - and asked Abed to film it. Karen added: 'I was in shock with the adrenaline at the time. 'After, my partner sat me down to check I was okay - that was when I realized it was painful and I started to cry.' The couple were stuck on the island until the morning - and Karen, then 18, said she woke up in pain. But due to how remote the area was, they crossed their fingers it would heal by itself and continued their trip. Karen said: 'I woke up and I couldn't really move my neck. 'I called my mom and told her what happened - she was like: "What the f***, Karen?" She was so concerned. 'It was a pain to shower and even to have my hair sat on my neck - I had to have my hair up for a few days because of the stinging. 'But I did carry on going in the sea and showering. 'It scabbed over, then the scabs came off a few times - after about two weeks it had healed.' Now fully healed, it has hardly even scarred - and there is virtually no evidence of the injury. Karen said she struggled to watch the video in the weeks after the injury in June 2022, but now can watch it with ease. She added: 'It was a horror, but it didn't ruin the vacation. That video describes my crazy personality really - it's a cool story to tell. 'This is a perfect example of what not to do when you've had a few drinks - I don't drink like that any more! 'But I was young - you do silly things.'
