I Am A Running Mate – K-drama Episode 2 Recap & Review
Bow Out Before the Applause Fades
Episode 2 of I Am Running Mate starts 26 days before the student council elections. Se-hoon, along with Jeong-hui, is now Sang-hyeon's vice president.
Joon-Gyu, the teacher in charge of the elections, calls them for a meeting at the office. Since Sang-hyeon has a complete team with two running mates, he becomes candidate one. Won-dae has only one running mate, Yu-Gyeong, so Joon-Gyu gives him one week to find the boys' representative.
Se-hoon has not talked to Dae-won since he decided to change camps and has ignored his calls. Therefore, Se-hoon has a panic attack when they meet at the election office.
After school, Sang-hyeon and his friend Mi-na take Se-hoon out to have fun. Se-hoon decides to take Won-dae's call when he keeps calling while at the restaurant. He lies that he has always been close to Sang-hyeon, so he decided to become his running mate when asked.
After the meal, Sang-hyeon gifts Se-hoon with his smartwatch, which makes Se-hoon feel valued, believing that Sang-hyeon is a good person.
The following day at school, Yu-gyeong confronts Se-hoon about recommending her to Won-dae and then quitting on them. Se-hoon still chooses not to explain himself to her and insists he did not betray them.
Regarding the school choir, Se-hoon says that he will not quit since the choir and the elections are two different things. After Se-hoon leaves, Yu-gyeon notices that Ji-hun is popular among the students, so she asks him whether he wants to run for the school council.
At the end of the school day, Sang-hyeon suggests that Se-hoon have a face-to-face conversation to clear up any misunderstandings. Se-hoon listens in on a conversation between Won-dae and Yu-hyeon and realises that they are not bummed that he changed his mind.
Instead, Yu-Gyeon thinks his leaving was a good idea, and they already have other candidates to consider. After hearing this, Se-hoon decides not to talk to Won-dae.
Later, Se-hoon and Jeong-hui meet at Sang-hyeon's family restaurant to discuss campaign strategies. Sang-hyeon is impressed by their suggestions but worries that Se-hoon might share pledges similar to what he discussed with Won-dae.
Se-hoon assures them that his plans are different and even shares the screenshots of the messages exchanged between him and Won-dae as proof.
Twenty-four days to the election, a conflict arises between Gyeong-tae and Se-hoon. A demeaning picture of Yu-gyeong that Gyeong-tae had drawn in one of their choir lessons is found inside the music files.
Se-hoon had accidentally forgotten to remove the picture, and Gyeong-tae had written his name on the back of the photo. Luckily, Gyeong-tae does not get disciplinary action but a warning and apologises to Yu-Gyeong.
Gyeong-tae confronts Se-hoon for ratting him out and betraying Won-dae. Se-hoon gets a new nickname from the students: 'the rat', while Gyeong-tae becomes 'the pervert.'
During the elections for the choir captain, Won-dae suggests that Se-hoon should be the next captain. The reason why Won-dae suggests Se-hoon is that he arrives early at the choir to tidy up. He also says that the choir and the student council are different, so he does not hold a grudge even if they are rivals in the school elections.
The teacher invites Se-hoon to speak since no one else stands up to be his opponent. Won-dae tells Se-hoon that he has forgiven him when he goes up to give a speech, and the students find Won-dae favourable for suggesting a rival.
Se-hoon starts his speech by saying that he was ashamed that a simple reason like tidying up the choir room could get him to become a captain. He thinks it is unfair to other members with more serious roles, such as those who organise the music sheets, distribute snacks, those in charge of group messages, edit videos, and play the piano.
Se-hoon says that Won-dae's words are disappointing. Se-hoon adds that he is tone-deaf and unsuitable to become choir captain and nominates Yu Ui-jun, saying that he is loyal, a good singer, and has a passion for music.
Before his speech, Se-hoon received a message from Ji-hun telling him he had decided to join Won-dae as his running mate. At the end of the episode, Se-hoon writes a withdrawal application from the choir.
In his letter, he says that he is happy for the applause he got for his efforts, but he no longer wants to be applauded for mere efforts. He chooses to bow out before the applause fades.
The Episode Review
It is getting messy, and we are here for it. Won-dae and Yu-gyeong know exactly what they are doing by asking Ji-hun to join them. It is too early to tell if this will cause a rift between the friends, but time will tell. The thing about politics is that it is a dirty game.
To win, one must compromise a lot. We are just beginning, so the gloves are not yet out.
Won-dae tried to use Se-hoon during the choir elections to create a favourable image of himself. Se-hoon clocked it and handled it diplomatically, like a pro. We also have to take a moment and discuss Gyeong-tae's actions.
What he did to Yu-gyeong was wrong, and he should have received a severe punishment. It is annoying when such incidents are not handled with the severity they deserve. Yu-gyeong deserved better.

I tried the viral Korean skincare routine to get glass skin – a Boots serum with unusual ingredient made a difference
IT seems that no matter where you look these days, K-Beauty has taken over. In fact, there are almost 2 million videos on the subject on TikTok and the Korean skincare industry has taken over the UK's beauty scene. 9 9 A Boots spokesperson told Fabulous that one Korean beauty product sells almost every 15 seconds at Boots and represents over a tenth of all skincare sales. And it seems for good reason, many beauty experts have said that South Korea is estimated to be 10-12 years ahead of Europe and the US in terms of skincare and aesthetic treatments. Here, Fabulous reporter Leanne Hall, tries out the viral Korean skincare routine for two weeks to see whether she ends up with glass skin and which new ingredients are worth the hype. For context, I love South Korea and its culture and even visited earlier this year, and yes, I took home lots of skincare goodies. But I had no idea that many of the products were now readily available to buy in the UK, thanks to Boots, and I was eager to see what was on offer and how well they worked. I retired my normal skincare routine - opting for a new six-step routine using only K Beauty products for two weeks. My skin is on the combination side and pretty sensitive, meaning active ingredients, fragrance and sunscreen all tend to break me out quickly. Anua Heartleaf Quercetinol Pore Deep Cleansing Foam - £13 9 This is a relatively basic foaming cleanser, but one that does the job. With somewhat oily skin, I prefer a foam cleanser to others, and while this left my skin feel squeaky clean, it didn't dry it out. I don't think this did much to make my skin have that shiny glass finish, but it was the perfect building block to start my skincare routine with. Rating: 4/5 Medicube Zero Pore Pad 2.0 - £24 BUY IT NOW These Medicube pore pads are constantly coming up on my TikTok timeline so I was eager to try them out. They promise to gently exfoliate the skin with a blend of chemical exfoliants - 4.5% AHA Lactic Acid & 0.45% BHA Salicylic Acid. The pads are super easy to use, and I did see a difference with blackheads and clogged pores after using the toner. It also promises to help shrink pores, but I'm yet to see the difference there. Rating: 3/5 Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum - £20 BUY IT NOW Once the toner has been absorbed into the skin, it was time for a serum. A serum was not something I used before this experiment but is now something I can't live without. This Anua PDRN serum is super lightweight but packs a punch with its active ingredients. The blend of PDRN (salmon DNA taken from it's semen) and hyaluronic acid gives your skin a well-needed boost of moisture, increases collagen and help skin rejuvenate quicker. What is PDRN? Leanna Zaman, Boots Beauty Specialist, explains: 'PDRN is hitting the headlines for all the right reasons. "Derived from salmon DNA, which surprisingly shares a lot of similarities with our own DNA, PDRN-based skincare is great for most skin types and suitable for all ages. "In fact, anyone experiencing skin damage, dryness, or dehydration can benefit from PDRN's skin-loving properties. "I recommend pairing it with other humectants, such as Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramides, to enhance its hydrating and barrier-restoring effects." I'm fully aware the thought of putting salmon semen on your face is weird, but it works and has become a holy grail ingredient in South Korea for a reason. Rating: 5/5 Tocobo Multi Ceramide Cream - £21 BUY IT NOW When I first tried this moisturiser I was nervous. It has a thick whipped texture which is often too heavy for my skin type and clogs my pores. But after two weeks of using it I am pleased to report that I haven't had any issues with it. Instead, my skin has never been softer or more hydrated thanks to it being enriched with ceramides to moisturise the skin. I've often suffered with flaky dry skin around my chin but this immediately cleared it up, a total must-have. Rating: 5/5 Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics - was £15.50, currently £13.95 BUY IT NOW I know sunscreen is important to wear, but this is another product that I tend to skip. I have tried too many SPFs to try and count them all and each one has had my skin breaking out almost immediately. But I'm pleased to report this doesn't seem to have caused any acne since using it every day. Not only has it kept my skin clear, it absorbs quickly, leaves skin glowing and doesn't hurt when it goes near my eyes. Rating: 4/5 Medicube Collagen Night Wrapping Mask - £26 BUY IT NOW This particular Medicube buy has been going viral on TikTok with many praising it for giving you instant glass skin, so naturally, I had to try it. You simply do your usual skincare routine before applying a thick layer of this clear mask to your face. You then want to let it dry for 15 minutes to dry down and then you can sleep. Not only is this super fun to peel off (don't worry, it doesn't hurt like the ones in the 90s) it also instantly makes your skin glow. After peeling it off you are left with the softest skin you've ever had which reflects when the light hits for the perfect glass skin. Rating: 4/5 Final Thoughts Using these products together has absolutely made a difference in how my skin feels and looks. My skin genuinely feels more hydrated than it has ever been. (Trust me, I can say this with confidence, as I was berated for how dehydrated it was when I went to a facialist in Korea.) Not only was it so much more hydrated, making fine lines (hello 30) disappear but it left my skin more plump and glowy. While moisturising the skin, I also found I didn't break out as often as I normally would. For those wanting an extensive skincare routine, I would recommend all of these products. For those wanting to splurge on one wonder product, the collagen wrapping mask is a must-have to give skin an instant lift, perfect for prepping for big events. 9

Rishabh Pant conjures maverick magic to cap remarkable comeback to Test cricket
'Stupid, stupid, stupid,' echoed the words of Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar. The first player to ever reach 10,000 Test runs, he is known as 'Sunny' to his mates, Mr. Gavaskar to you or I, and as a demi-god to the 1.5 billion people of India. 'He should not be going into the Indian dressing room,' Gavaskar continued, live on air for ABC Radio in Australia. His fit of rage continuing as his co-commentator, the experienced Harsha Bhogle, himself a veteran of over 30 years of broadcasting, looked and listened on in cowed disbelief. 'He should be going into the other dressing room,' concluded Gavaskar. The player responsible for the outburst was Rishabh Pant. The maverick's maverick, Pant is one of few athletes in the world capable of eliciting such strength of emotion from onlookers. The cricket you dream of is his reality. When it works, it's wonderful; but when it doesn't, it can look woeful. Gavaskar's dressing down was the result of the latter. With the match in the balance, Pant had gone for a scoop off Aussie bowler Scott Boland and succeeded only in finding the fielder in the deep. Pant plays these shots while falling over. And so as the ball settled in the hands of Nathan Lyon, he found himself on his backside both figuratively and literally. The thing with mavericks is just as strongly as the emotion burns in you when they fail, equally it glows when they succeed. And as Pant soaked in the celebrations that accompanied him bringing up his second century of the match at Headingley, he looked towards the media balcony where a beaming Gavaskar was standing in applause, imploring Pant to recreate his celebration of day one where he debuted a front flip upon reaching three figures. Pant acknowledged the legend's request, smiled, and waved it away. 'You just stand there and admire and sometimes scratch your head,' Pant's batting partner KL Rahul said of his teammate after play. Rahul, himself, made 137. 'He's a unique player and you just leave them be.' Pant is well en route to becoming arguably the greatest wicketkeeper batter to ever live. An average of 44.44 speaks to his consistency; the 82 sixes he has hit in only 77 innings speaks to his chaos. In ten matches in England he has made four centuries, the joint most of any wicketkeeper in history along with Alec Stewart and Matt Prior, two of England's longest ever serving wicketkeepers. MS Dhoni, India's most-loved wicketkeeper in history, made six Test centuries in total. Pant already has eight. Not to mention the seven times he has been dismissed in the nineties. Pant's achievements are all the more remarkable given the near fatal car accident he suffered in 2022. Driving along a motorway in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, Pant's car struck the central reservation after he fell asleep at the wheel. It was a miracle he survived. 'It's a remarkable comeback, honestly,' said Aussie great Ricky Ponting, who is close with Pant after working together in the Indian Premier League. 'If you can even see his leg now, and if you listen to the stories he tells about what he confronted when he woke up on the side of the road having been thrown out of his car 40 metres up the road at 200kph, I mean…' Pant's return to the Test arena took just under two years, a stage where, despite his legend in the shorter formats, he describes as the one 'where I belong most'. Pant's twin centuries showcase how fast cricket and life moves on. India are a new-look side. Pant, himself, a newly appointed vice-captain. The question was what shape would India take after losing the father figures of the side in Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin and Rohit Sharma all in one go. Within the space of three days, the answer is already clear: Rishabh's. Greater responsibility brings the expectation of greater maturity. But it also gives the chance for greater mischief. After all, an 18-year-old is allowed in both the voting booth and the pub. Pant said ahead of the series that he relished the chance for greater responsibility and confirmed he'd be batting at number five. But that extra responsibility hasn't quelled his eccentricities. 'He has a method to his batting which none of us in this room understand,' Rahul continued when describing Pant. 'But it works for him and he's gotten hundreds all over the world.' When facing seam, he still runs down the wicket and charges the seamers. When faced with spin, he still wallops the ball for sixes at will and takes risks others wouldn't consider. All while providing a commentary soundtrack for the world to listen to. 'No twos between these two,' joked Harry Brook at Pant and KL Rahul's expense, inferring the duo don't fancy running that much against the spin of Shoaib Bashir. 'If he bowls a full toss, no twos,' came Pant's reply with one eye on Brook and the other on the stand he planned on hitting the ball into. Pant spent 26 balls in the nineties. An uncharacteristic show of nerves, but not a surprising one for a player who has been dismissed within ten runs of a century on seven occasions. Pant's blase attitude to the 'nervous nineties' is his personality in a nutshell. He's not here for personal accolades. But his nudges and nurdles as the three figures approached suggested that it wasn't a habit he wished to turn into a tradition. A cut into the offside brought up the century and saw the entirety of Headingley rise to their feet. Pant is a rare player that entertains those who are new to the sport, and wows those who are old to it. At Headingley this afternoon, a player who will go down in history, made today his.

China tries to shift appetite for extreme eating shows
HONG KONG, June 24 (Reuters) - China said on Tuesday that consumers should "rationally resist bad content" of extreme eating shows, which have boomed online, because they cause "heartbreaking" food waste and spread "unhealthy" ideas about food. Extreme eating shows in China have included people eating as many cups of instant noodles as possible, devouring dumplings and wolfing down hamburgers. The statement from China's Consumer Association is the latest effort to curb people's appetite for online eating shows, which remain widely streamed in the world's second largest economy even after attempts to more tightly regulate the industry in 2020. The shows attract hoards of followers who are keen to watch people consuming copious amounts of food, including very spicy dishes. Some online platforms are "now full of extreme eating shows, which use the food intake that challenges the physiological limits of human beings," the statement said. "Not only does it seriously deviate from the true connotation of food culture, but it also causes heartbreaking food waste." The shows trample on China's traditional virtues of diligence and thrift, the association added, and also spread "unhealthy and irrational" ideas about eating that could harm young people. "Every porridge and every meal should be thought of as hard-earned," it said. China in 2020 strengthened regulation and banned clips that promoted food waste. It passed a law in 2021 to combat food waste while last year authorities also unveiled an action plan to boost food production while reducing waste. The association urged consumers not to follow, like, or forward extreme eating shows and actively block related accounts or channels. Show creators must refuse waste and not plan, produce, or publish extreme eating content, it said. "The focus of creation should be shifted to exploring the cultural connotation of the true nature of food." The statement comes a week after Beijing ordered some civil servants not to dine out in groups of more than three after deaths linked to excessive alcohol consumption at banquets. China is also battling rising obesity, particularly among children, after physical activity dropped during the COVID-19 pandemic and people ordered more fast food online.
