
NIA-Bhubaneswar gets police station status
Bhubaneswar: Odisha government has declared the branch office of the National Investigating Agency (NIA) in Bhubaneswar as a police station. The State Home department accorded the police station status through a notification signed by Additional Chief Secretary Satyabrata Sahu.
The notification in this regard was issued on May 17. As per the notification, the State government exercising the powers conferred under Section 2 (1) (u) of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (46 of 2023) has declared the NIA office located in VSS Nagar area of Bhubaneswar as a police station with the whole of Odisha falling under its jurisdiction.
The NIA office has been designated as a police station for the investigation of scheduled offences under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008 (34 of 2008), for exercising the powers under the provisions of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (46 of 2023).
The Odisha Home department notification further noted that the order will come into force on the date of publication of this notification in the Odisha Gazette. The NIA office, headed by a Superintendent of Police, In-Charge, is located at Vani Vihar in the VSS Nagar area of the city. With this notification, the counter-terrorism agency that reports to the Union Home Ministry will formally open the office, which has been designated as a police station by the State government on May 17. Odisha has several vital installations of national importance like the Integrated Test Range (ITR) - Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) at Chandipur, off the Odisha coast, Ordnance factory at Badmal in Bolangir, Paradip Port and the famous Jagannath temple at Puri.
Due to its 480 km-long coastline and proximity to Bangladesh, Odisha is vulnerable to terrorist activities as well. Odisha is also reportedly witnessing a heavy influx of illegal infiltration of Bangladeshi citizens.

1 Bangladeshi national, 1 Indian tout arrested in Tripura
The Government Railway Police (GRP) Monday informed that one Bangladeshi national and an Indian tout were arrested during two separate raids at the Agartala railway station in Tripura. In the first incident, a Bangladeshi national, identified as Pranajit Ray, 35, was arrested during a joint operation conducted by the Agartala GRP, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Border Security Force (BSF) and other sister agencies on Wednesday. During the preliminary interrogation, the investigators found that Ray, a resident of Sylhet district in Bangladesh, illegally entered Tripura and had planned to go to Kolkata from the Agartala railway station. 'We seized some documents and some Indian currency. We are examining these things,' said an officer. In a separate incident, an Indian human trafficker, a resident of Chanipur in West Tripura district, was also arrested during a joint operation conducted by security agencies. A GRP officer said the trafficker, identified as Debasish Malakar alias Debu, used to provide food and shelter to Bangladeshi nationals who entered Tripura illegally. 'He was absconding for a long time. We arrested him yesterday (Wednesday) and produced before court today (Friday),' he said. Several Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas have been arrested for entering Tripura illegally in recent months. As per a report of the Tripura Police, 816 Bangladeshi nationals, 79 Rohingya persons and two Nigerians were arrested in the state between January 1, 2024, and February 28 this year. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, recently informed that 2,815 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested for illegally crossing the Indo-Bangla border into Tripura from 2022 to October 31, 2024, out of which 1,746 have been pushed back to their country and 1,069 are housed in jail custody, temporary detention centres, shelter homes or are out on bail. Tripura shares 856 km of international border with Bangladesh, much of which is covered with barbed wire fence except a few patches that are still unfenced due to local disputes.

NIA names 64th accused in 2022 Kerala RSS leader Srinivasan's murder case
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against a 64th individual in connection with the murder of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader SK Srinivasan in Palakkad, Kerala, in April 2022. The killing was allegedly carried out by members of the banned organisation, the Popular Front of India (PFI).The supplementary chargesheet, filed before the NIA Special Court in Ernakulam, names Rafeek MS as the 64th person to be formally accused in the case. He has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The NIA stated that its investigation remains ongoing, with 71 people identified as accused so far, and eight still to the agency, Rafeek MS, described as an active member of the now-banned Popular Front of India, conspired with others involved in the murder and knowingly harboured Muhammed Shefeek, a key conspirator and member of the reconnaissance team. Rafeek is also accused of destroying evidence and continuing to shelter Shefeek even after the organisation was banned by the Government of India in September 2022. NIA charge-sheets another accused in RSS leader murder case
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday charge-sheeted another accused in a case relating to the murder of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Sreenivasan by members of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) in Palakkad, officials said. In a supplementary chargesheet filed before the NIA Special Court, Ernakulam, Rafeek M.S. has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He is the 64th accused to be charge-sheeted in the case, the officials said. 71 accused The NIA has so far identified 71 accused in the case and is continuing with its investigation and search to nab the eight absconders. Rafeek, an active cadre of the PFI, had conspired with other accused persons involved in the attack on Sreenivasan, as per the NIA investigations. 'He had knowingly harboured Muhammed Shefeek, a key member of the conspiracy and the recce team involved in the murder. Rafeek had also destroyed the evidence and even continued to harbour Shefeek after the attack, despite the PFI being banned by the Government of India in September 2022,' the statement said. Sreenivisan was murdered on April 16, 2022.
