I read Marisa Crane's debut I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself when it came out in 2023, and it blew me away. A Sharp Endless Need is so different from their first novel, yet it feels like a perfect successor. Yes, it's about teen basketball prodigies and not a speculative, dystopian future.
The themes and writing style, however, make for an entirely cohesive body of work. This coming-of-age novel is a poetic, rich and sharply written narrative of a queer person seeking purpose in their life. It's about ambition and obsession, and reads like a slow-motion train wreck that you can't look away from. Part Reflection, Part Retelling
Part of A Sharp Endless Need 's success comes from Crane's decision to have Mack narrate the novel from some point in the future. She's looking back with wisdom on her teen years. While she doesn't seem to regret her decisions, she does comment on what she wishes she had known as a teen. This stylistic choice results in a story that's part reflection and part retelling, one in which the reader is intimately involved.

In case you were wondering, you don't have to know a lot about basketball to enjoy this book. Crane clearly does, and their passion for the game shines through. However, that passion, along with the intensity of high school life, allows readers who don't know the sport well to appreciate Mack's obsessive journey.
Set against the backdrop of small-town Pennsylvania, A Sharp Endless Need combines sharp, exhilarating sports writing with a raw, heartfelt exploration of grief, identity and the choices that shape us. It's both a poignant coming-of-age novel and a love letter to basketball, perfect for anyone who has struggled to find their purpose.

Allison Holker's eldest daughter, Weslie, is getting real about the 'strict' lessons her mom used to impose when it came to eating. 'My entire growing up — I say this to her all the time now — [but] she was so almond mom,' Weslie, 17, said on the Sunday, June 22, episode of their 'Between Us' podcast. 'She was like, 'You have to eat greens [and have] chicken every night.'' While Holker, 37, was unsure about the origins of the slang term 'almond mom,' she does concur that she acted that way when it came to food. 'I definitely was one with Weslie. I was very strict,' Holker said. 'I was cooking all of the time, and her lunches for school were all the organic versions of everything. Like, there were no processed snacks. Everything was, like, different types of nuts [and] I had a lot of dried fruit options.' Allison Holker Admits She and Daughter Weslie, 16, Have Dealt With 'Hard Times': 'We've Beefed' For the uninitiated, an 'almond mom' is defined as a parent who often imposes unhealthy eating habits and body image expectations onto their children. Tyrese Haliburton's right leg gave out just minutes into Game 7 on Sunday night, and he had to be helped off the floor. () The NBA world was thrilled to get a rare Game 7 in the NBA Finals. But just minutes into that contest between the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday night, everything shifted. Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton went crashing down to the court during the first quarter, appearing to re-injure his strained right calf during a non-contact moment. He immediately started pounding the floor at the Paycom Center, too, and was extremely emotional as play went the other way. The Pacers quickly ruled him out just a few minutes later with what they called a right "lower leg injury." Further specifics are not known, though Haliburton's father confirmed to ESPN that it is an Achilles injury. Advertisement Almost immediately, players from across the league chimed in on social media. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James shared what most of basketball fans were feeling in a very not-safe-for-work way. He was far from alone. Even Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes chimed in. Haliburton first went down with the calf injury during Game 5 of the series, though he returned to the court for the Pacers' Game 6 win on Thursday. He had 14 points and five assists in that 108-91 win, which forced Sunday's Game 7. Haliburton was off to a great start on Sunday night, too. He had nine points and went 3-of-4 from the 3-point line before he went down to keep the Pacers in the mix early. Advertisement The Pacers are playing in the NBA Finals for the first time since 2000. The franchise, though they have three ABA titles from before the merger, has never won a league title. While Haliburton's injury doesn't end that quest completely, it does make it that much harder.
