Lions ignoring the noise ahead of Wallabies Test

eNCA18-07-2025
BRISBANE - British and Irish Lions assistant coach Johnny Sexton said his team was taking no notice of bookmakers who have the visitors overwhelming favourites to win the opening Test against the Wallabies.
The teams play the first match of the three-Test series at a sold-out Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday, with Australia widely considered the underdogs.
The last time they met, in Brisbane in 2013, the Lions edged home 23-21 when Australia's Kurtley Beale slipped while attempting what would have been a match-winning penalty.
The Wallabies this time have been hit by injuries to star forwards Rob Valetini and Will Skelton, but Sexton stressed the Lions would not be taking them lightly.
"We don't pay too much attention to bookies' odds or what people are saying," Sexton said.
"We are just concentrating on tomorrow and trying to put a great performance out there because that's what is going to be needed -- a great performance, not a good performance."
The former Irish fly-half made his Lions debut in Brisbane in 2013, playing all three Tests as the Lions claimed the series 2-1.
"I think the atmosphere, the crowds, that's the thing that always lives with you," he said.
"Obviously, when Kurtley missed the kick the euphoria we felt shows the margins of professional sport, of top-level sport.
"It's going to come down to something small like that and hopefully we come out on the right side."
Australia will give 22-year-old flyhalf Tom Lynagh his starting debut on Saturday, but Sexton said he was sure the Australian would cope with the pressure.
"He's not had much experience internationally, a few games off the bench," Sexton said.
"But it seems like he's got a really steady head on him and is a mature guy for his age.
"We've looked at a lot of him this week. Once Noah Lolesio was ruled out we knew it would be either him or Ben Donaldson and we've done our homework on them.

Currie Cup result: Boland shock Lions in Wellington

Both teams looked to play attacking rugby but were guilty of making numerous errors. The Boland Cavaliers shocked the Lions 29-10 in an entertaining, yet error-ridden round three Currie Cup match played in Wellington on Sunday afternoon to announce themselves as title contenders in 2025. Hawies Fourie's team scored four tries to the two by the Lions, who had comfortably won their two previous matches, at home against Western Province and the Sharks. And after the Bulls' loss on Saturday (to the Pumas), who were also unbeaten going into round three, there are no longer any unbeaten teams in this year's competition and the top six of the eight-team log is as tight as it can get. The Pumas, Cheetahs and Boland are on 11 points each, while the Lions, Griquas and Bulls are on 10 points each. The Cavaliers secured their bonus point late on thanks to a try by replacement Juan Mostert, who made a big impact. Earlier Donavan Don, who got two, and Xavier Mitchell scored tries for the team, while fullback James Tedder kicked well and also played a big role in his team's attacking game. The Lions' tries came from Kade Wolhuter and Gianni Lombard. Pumas beat Bulls The other big result of the weekend was the Pumas' impressive and unexpected 41-7 thrashing of the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls had won their two opening games of the season and were favoured to make it three in a row against the men from Mbombela. But Jimmy Stonehouse's Pumas played some sparkling rugby in scoring six tries to the one by their hosts. The 2022 champions are now very much back in the race for the semifinals, with four regular season games to play. They're next up at home against the Lions, while the Bulls will be in Wellington to take on Boland. Also on Saturday, the Cheetahs pipped the Sharks 7-5 in Clermont in a low-scoring but fairly entertaining match, though both teams made an abundance or errors. It was the third loss in a row for the men from KwaZulu-Natal. The Sharks next go to Kimberley for a date with Griquas, who pulled off a big win at home on Friday, beating Western Province 47-17 while the Cheetahs are up against the men from Cape Town in Bloemfontein. After three straight defeats without picking up a bonus point, Western Province are bottom of the points table, with the Sharks just a head of them with one (bonus) point.

Proteas fall short despite Maphaka, Rickelton heroics in opening T20I against Australia

Photo: AFP Image: AFP The Proteas began their T20 International and ODI series against Australia with a 17-run defeat in the first T20I at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin on Sunday, despite the best efforts of young speedster Kwena Maphaka and wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton. South Africa had been set a competitive target of 179 after skipper Aiden Markram won the toss and chose to field first. The hosts signalled their attacking intent from the outset, with Mitch Marsh dispatching a Lungi Ngidi outswinger for six off the first ball. George Linde dropped Travis Head in Kagiso Rabada's opening over, but the batter fell next ball, cutting to Maphaka in the gully for two. Toss Update 🪙 South Africa have won the toss and have elected to bowl first in this opening T20I! 🔥🏏 Here's your Proteas Playing XI as we kick off the tour Down Under! 🇿🇦💪#WozaNawe — Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA) August 10, 2025 Video Player is loading. When Marsh skied one in Rabada's second over, Maphaka held on in the covers to make it 30/3. Australia continued to play aggressively. Ngidi's slower ball accounted for Cameron Green, who went for 35 off 13, caught by Rickelton. At 4/71 after the Powerplay, the Proteas had the upper hand. Maphaka bowled Mitchell Owen for two before Linde took a sharp diving catch in the covers to dismiss Glenn Maxwell for one off Muthusamy. The spinner's first two overs went for just two runs, helping peg back the scoring. 🚨 Change of Innings 🚨 Brilliant bowling from our Proteas Men sees Australia restricted to 178 all out in 20 overs! 🔥🏏 Now it's over to our batters to chase it down and kick off the series in style! 🇿🇦💪#WozaNawe — Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA) August 10, 2025 Tim David, however, kept the scoreboard ticking, reaching his half-century off 30 balls (five sixes). His stand with Ben Dwarshuis frustrated South Africa, until Maphaka returned to have Dwarshuis caught by Markram for 17. At 7/136 after 15 overs, the Proteas were still in the hunt, but David punished a Tristan Stubbs drop by launching consecutive sixes off Muthusamy. Stubbs later redeemed himself, catching David for 83 off Maphaka's bowling, before Adam Zampa lofted another Maphaka delivery to Dewald Brevis. The youngster's figures of 4/20 were the best in the innings as Australia closed on 178. Markram and Rickelton began the chase brightly, with the captain driving Josh Hazlewood through the covers and over midwicket for boundaries. But Markram fell for 12, and Lhuan-dré Pretorius (14) followed soon after. Brevis made just two as South Africa slipped to 3/48 after six overs. Into the final phase of play in Darwin! ⏳ Rickelton is keeping the chase alive as the Proteas men reach 120/5 after 15 overs. 💪🔥 59 runs are needed from 30 balls with all to play for in this opening T20I! 🏏🇿🇦#WozaNawe — Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA) August 10, 2025
