DeChambeau, English and Riley tie for 2nd place at PGA Championship, 5 shots behind Scheffler
The power hitter also seemed thrilled to get out of Charlotte and as far away from Quail Hollow's closing three holes known as the Green Mile as he could.
'The Green Mile did it to me yesterday and kind of did it to me again today — and that's golf, man,' DeChambeau said. 'I've got to be more precise and fix what I can fix to make myself more consistent and get up there, the likes of what Scottie (Scheffler) is doing right now.'
DeChambeau played the final three holes at Quail Hollow in 4-over-par for the weekend, and tied for second with Harris English and Davis Riley at 6-under 278, five shots behind Scheffler.
DeChambeau called the closing stretch at Quail Hollow one of the toughest he's played.
On both Saturday and Sunday he birdied the difficult par-4 15th hole and entered the Green Mile looking to apply pressure to Scheffler.
He never did.
Instead DeChambeau was forced to take some consolation with his third top-5 finish in the last four major championships, including last summer's win at the U.S. Open. He has seven top-10 finishes in his last 11 majors.
'Always proud to top five in a major,' DeChambeau said. 'I feel like I'm playing good when I'm doing that but I mean, it's disappointing not to get the job done because that's what I came here to do.'
Now he'll set his sights on winning a third U.S. Open next month at Oakmont.
'I'm going to work my butt to have make that happen,' DeChambeau said.
Riley will be there with him.
After shooting 68 and 67 on Friday and Saturday, he closed with a disappointing 72 but hung on for a tie for second place, by far his best finish at a major. It moved him to 53rd in the world ranking, setting him up for a spot in the U.S. Open field.
The top four finishers at the PGA Championship also earned an automatic spot in the 2026 Masters.
'Hopefully, it will springboard me and I can kind of get in contention more on some of these majors,' Riley said.
English had the low round of the day, shooting a 65 after playing the final 12 holes in 6 under. That included making a birdie on No. 18, one of just six on the day from the field.
'I feel like I'm a more well rounded player now, and it's just about matching up everything,' English said referring to a string of missed cuts at the majors earlier in his career. 'Got to get my short game a little tighter, got to get my putting a little more consistent, but I'm really happy with the way I'm hitting the ball right now.'

He said it also gives some confidence with team selection for September's Ryder Cup fast approaching.
'It's a big thought in my mind,' said English, who helped the U.S. team win in 2021 at Whistling Straights, but did not make the team in 2023. 'Playing at Whistling, once you make one of those teams, you never want to miss out.
'It's just the pinnacle of our sport. It's definitely the forefront of my mind. Yeah, I'm here to try to compete in a major championship, and however well it does with me and the Ryder Cup, I'm all for it. I know this will go a long way, but I know there's a lot of golf to play and keep getting better and keep having good finishes.'

Sébastien Haller leaves Dortmund for Utrecht after stint marked by cancer recovery and near-misses
DORTMUND, Germany (AP) — Sébastien Haller's eventful three years at Borussia Dortmund ended Monday with a transfer to Dutch club Utrecht. It ended a stint with the German club which began with a cancer diagnosis but during his time there Haller almost won the Bundesliga, reached the final of the Champions League, and won the African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast. He found himself increasingly sidelined at Dortmund, though, and spent last season on loan. 'Sébastien has written a special story here,' Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl said in a statement Monday. Weeks after signing for Dortmund in 2022, and before playing a game, Haller was diagnosed with a testicular tumor during the team's preseason camp. After two operations and a course of chemotherapy, he returned to action just six months later. Nine Bundesliga goals from Haller in the second half of the 2022-23 season put Dortmund on the verge of a long-awaited Bundesliga title but the team fell short in the final minutes of the season. Injuries and inconsistent form meant Haller's role in the Champions League final a year later was as a late substitute when Dortmund lost 2-0 to Real Madrid. It was to be his last game for Dortmund before loans last season with Leganes in Spain and then Utrecht. Haller returns on a one-season contract to familiar surroundings at Utrecht, where his prolific scoring a decade ago helped to launch his career. He scored six times in 18 games on loan there last season to help the team finish fourth in the Dutch league, which put the team into the Europa League qualifying rounds. Cal Raleigh hits 47th homer, closing in on Salvador Perez's catcher record
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — Cal Raleigh autographed a toilet seat for one fan, along with the scores of baseballs and other paraphernalia 'The Big Dumper' signed for shrieking Little Leaguers. Raleigh gave the kids a real treat hours later. The Seattle Mariners slugger socked his 47th homer of the season to boost his major league lead and put him within striking distance of the season homer record for catchers set by Kansas City's Salvador Perez. 'He continues to swing a really hot bat,' Mariners manager Dan Wilson said. 'I don't think I'll ever get tired of that.' Raleigh's two-run shot in the seventh inning sent hundreds of Little Leaguers from around the globe cheering in delight to see one of the brightest stars in Sunday's MLB Little League Classic go deep. It didn't help the Mariners much in defeat. The New York Mets beat the Mariners 7-3 and won the last two games of the three-game set. The Mariners are still in the thick of the AL wild-card race and hope to gain ground when they head Monday to Philadelphia for the start of a three-game series. Raleigh could make catching history in Philly. Perez hit 48 homers for the Royals in 2021. 'I think it's been an incredible season for him,' Wilson said. 'But I think we knew what's in there. He's done a great job of bringing it out.' Raleigh put more than his prodigious power on display in the home of youth baseball's biggest weeks of the summer. Raleigh's chest protector featured a baseball card design of Mariners players and coaches from when they were kids. He breezed through the pregame clubhouse in a 'Little Dumper' T-shirt gifted by some of the Little Leaguers. 'You grow up wanting to come here as a kid. He hit 27 homers in 2022, 30 in 2023 and 34 last season. Now he's on pace to easily top 50 homers and maybe more. There are only five other players in big league history who have hit at least 40 homers while primarily playing catcher: Perez, Johnny Bench (twice), Roy Campanella, Todd Hundley and Mike Piazza (twice). Bench, Campanella and Piazza are Hall of Famers. 'He's a guy that we knew all along coming up in the minor leagues that he had a pretty high ceiling,' Wilson said. 'What he does behind the plate and what he does now at the plate has been unbelievable. He's carried the weight of both of those things and has done it very well.' A first-time All-Star at age 28, Raleigh burst through on the national scene when he won the All-Star Home Run Derby. He became the first switch-hitter and first catcher to win the title.
