Sunday marks Princess Basma's birthday
AMMAN — Sunday marks the birthday of HRH Princess Basma Bint Talal, a pioneering advocate for women's rights, youth empowerment and sustainable human development in Jordan and the Arab region.
Princess Basma is the founder and chairperson of the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD), one of the Kingdom's oldest and most impactful non-profit organisations, established in 1977.
JOHUD operates through a network of 52 locally managed Community Development Centres, offering a unique model of participatory development rooted in community engagement and decentralised governance, a vision closely aligned with Princess Basma's lifelong commitment to inclusive development.
In recognition of her decades-long service, His Majesty King Abdullah awarded Princess Basma the Silver Jubilee Medal in April 2024. In May 2022, she received the Order of the State Centennial for her contributions to Jordan's progress and national development.
Among the national initiatives launched and directed by Princess Basma are the Goodwill Campaign (established 1991), providing support to thousands of families in need annually, and the Queen Alia Competition for Social Responsibility, which has been promoting social awareness among generations of Jordan's school children for decades.
Since its inception in 1992, Princess Basma has chaired the Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW), playing a pivotal role in addressing women's and gender-related issues, particularly in legislative and policy reform.
In 2025, the 2024 JNCW Law was passed to strengthen coordination between public and civil institutions and advance national strategies for women's political, social, and economic empowerment.
In 2004, she founded the National Alliance Against Hunger and Malnutrition (Najmah), hosted by JOHUD, to support national efforts to combat hunger through local and international partnerships.
On the international level, as a member of the Advisory Board of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, Princess Basma advocates for environmental sustainability, leveraging JOHUD's networks as platforms for environmental activism. She serves as an Honorary Human Development Ambassador for UNDP and Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women and the UNFPA. She holds a PhD in development studies from Oxford University.
She has been married to Walid Kurdi since 1980. They have four children, Farah, Ghazi, Saad, and Zein Al Sharaf, and ten grandchildren: Fatima Al Zahraa, Zein Al Sharaf, Abdul Aziz, Aisha, Iman, Basma, Haya, Raya, Alia, and Jad.

2.3m youth in Jordan, majority single, highly educated
AMMAN — Youth aged 15–24 constitute one-fifth of Jordan's population, or around 2.3 million people, out of an estimated 11.7 million in 2024, according to population estimates by the Department of Statistics (DoS). Marking International Youth Day, observed on August 12, the DoS highlighted the distribution of youth across the Kingdom's governorates. Amman accounted for the largest share with 41.6 per cent, followed by Irbid at 19.2 per cent and Zarqa at 14.2 per cent. The remaining governorates recorded youth proportions ranging between 1 and 5.7 per cent. The sex ratio stood at 116 males per 100 females, according to a DoS statement. The adjusted labour force participation rate among youth was 21.5 per cent, 32.5 per cent for males and 8.9 per cent for females, compared with 65.9 per cent for the total population aged 15 and above. In terms of digital engagement, 64.2 per cent of youth aged 15–19 reported using computers, compared with 47.9 per cent among those aged 20–24. Internet use was almost universal, with over 96 per cent of youth in both age groups connected. Education levels remain high, with 99.3 per cent of youth having received formal education and 32.7 per cent holding a secondary school diploma or higher. The DoS also reported that 4.6 per cent of youth were married, while 95.3 per cent were single. Data from the 2023 Population and Family Health Survey showed that awareness of family planning was widespread among married women, with 27 per cent of those aged 15–19 and 46.4 per cent of those aged 20–24 using such methods.

Jordan, partners conduct new airdrop of aid into Gaza
AMMAN — The Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) said it conducted on Wednesday a new airdrop of aid into Gaza, in cooperation with international partners. JAF said in a statement that the operation delivered 79 tonnes of food and relief supplies into the besieged Strip, airdropped by military cargo planes from the Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF), Germany, the UAE, Belgium, France, and Italy. The operation on Wednesday brought the number of airdrops carried out solely by Jordan since the resumption of missions on July 27 to 153, while combined operations with partner nations have now reached 331. In total, the RJAF has delivered nearly 765 tonnes of humanitarian aid and essential supplies to the war-torn Strip, JAF said. Wednesday's mission also included aid provided by Canada, underscoring the growing international response in support of Jordan's efforts to assist the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

JHCO says 28-truck aid convoy crossed into Gaza on Tuesday
AMMAN — The Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation (JHCO) announced that a new 28-truck aid convoy, loaded with food supplies, crossed from Jordan into Gaza on Tuesday evening. JHCO Secretary-General Hussein Shibli said that the shipment falls within Jordan's continued efforts to support the people of Gaza. He told the public service TV Al Mamlaka that land aid convoys and airdrop operations are continuing to deliver relief to beseiged Gaza 'by all possible means.' He added that Jordan has sent 282 aid trucks to the Gaza Strip over the past two weeks, of which 220 have entered the strip so far.
