Disappointment for Ireland's Keith Andrews in first game as Premier League manager

Updated at 17.04 EX-IRELAND INTERNATIONAL Keith Andrews has made a disappointing start to life as a Premier League manager. The Dubliner's Brentford side were beaten 3-1 by Nottingham Forest in their opening game today. Forest made light of manager Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-season fears over a lack of signings with a dominant win over a much-changed Brentford. Chris Wood struck twice, either side of Dan Ndyoe's debut goal for Forest, on a nightmare afternoon for new Brentford boss Andrews. 'It was a very good first half. The combinations were really good, beautiful goals,' said Nuno. 'This is why we are insisting on a good, balanced squad that gives us options and solutions.' The Bees have lost their manager, captain and top scorer in the off-season. Thomas Frank left to take charge of Tottenham, Bryan Mbeumo got his dream move to Manchester United, and Arsenal secured Christian Norgaard. Yoane Wissa was also missing from the Brentford squad ahead of an expected move to Newcastle. Igor Thiago's first goal for the club from the penalty spot late on was the only consolation for the visitors. 'I do have genuine belief but we have to take responsibility for a first half that wasn't good enough,' said Andrews. Palace were denied an early opener when Eberechi Eze's free-kick was ruled out by a VAR review for Marc Guehi obstructing the Chelsea wall. New Chelsea signing Estevao came closest to snatching a winner for the home side, but the newly-crowned world champions were blunt in attack against a well-organised Palace defence. The Eagles' key duo of Guehi and Eze started despite mounting speculation that the England internationals are set to join Liverpool and Tottenham, respectively. 'As long as they are 100% committed, they will play as they are so good,' said Palace boss Oliver Glasner. 'They didn't just show they are great footballers, but they are great people and that's what I expected.' Eze thought he had opened the scoring with a blistering free-kick that had too much power for Robert Sanchez. The goal was disallowed for Guehi's role in creating a gap by man-handling Moises Caicedo into the Chelsea wall. Chelsea's demolition of European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final last month had raised the Blues' hopes they can challenge for a first Premier League title since 2017. But Enzo Maresca bemoaned his side's lack of preparation time since beating PSG in New York just 35 days ago. 'They played about eight (pre-season) games, we played just two, so we tried our best,' said the Italian. 'We expected a tough game. Apart from the first half free-kick, we didn't concede any chances.' Estevao scored against Chelsea at the Club World Cup in his final game for Palmeiras. The Brazilian has been hyped as one of the world's brightest young talents, but he lacked the composure to finish when he sliced high and wide from the middle of the box. – © AFP 2025

Nottingham Forest prove too good for Keith Andrews' Brentford

Nottingham Forest made a mockery of Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-match worries as they beat Keith Andrews' Brentford in their opening game of the Premier League season. Nuno expressed his "concern" for the campaign ahead of the match, citing a lack of options in his squad, but he will feel better after a rampant display at the City Ground. After new signings Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee were unveiled before kick-off, their new team-mates put on a show as Chris Wood's double and a debut goal for Dan Ndoye put them 3-0 up at the break. With more signings to come and a Europa League journey to look forward to after last season's seventh-place finish, Forest fans may have more optimism than their manager after this opener. It was the start that new boss Andrews would have dreaded. With Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard sold over the summer and Yoane Wissa effectively on strike trying to force a move away, the Dubliner has not been handed the easiest of tasks in his first managerial role. Igor Thiago got the Bees on the scoresheet with a second-half penalty, but life after Thomas Frank began poorly. Forest had only scored one goal in six excruciating pre-season friendlies, but they needed just six minutes to break the deadlock. Elliot Anderson's corner fell to Wood and the striker picked up where he left off last season by slamming home the loose ball from close range. Such was the novelty of scoring a goal, the celebrations on the touchline were wild, with goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa needing medical treatment after hitting his head on the roof of the dugout and suffering a nasty cut. Forest were electric and almost scored a brilliant team goal as new signing Ndoye, Morgan Gibbs-White and Anderson all combined, with the latter seeing a goalbound shot well blocked by Sepp van den Berg. Brentford looked to establish themselves in the game and forced goalkeeper Matz Sels into a good save when Yehor Yarmolyuk fizzed in a low shot. But Forest continued to dominate and two goals in five minutes before half-time sent them into dreamland. In the 42nd minute Gibbs-White arced in a delicious cross for Ndoye to send a flying header into the top corner. Then in the second minute of time added on Wood doubled his tally when he latched on to Anderson's through ball and rounded Caoimhin Kelleher to put it in an empty net. Forest were irresistible after the break as they searched for more goals. Callum Hudson-Odoi, on the brink of signing a new contract, stung the palms of Kelleher before Gibbs-White hooked an acrobatic effort just over the crossbar. Brentford brought on Jordan Henderson in the 68th minute as they tried to stem the tide and 10 minutes later they had reduced their deficit. Forest midfielder Ibrahim Sangare handled the ball in the area and Thiago rolled home the resulting penalty. There was no grandstand finish, though, as Forest got their season off to a winning start.

Evan Ferguson's new boss closes in on stat held by a former Ireland manager

Gian Piero Gasperini will hit a major milestone next week when he takes charge of Roma for the first time in their season opener against Bologna. For the former Atalanta manager, who green-lit the swoop for Ireland striker Evan Ferguson this summer, it will be his 600th game in charge in Serie A - a figure that only four men have previously hit. One of those is former Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni, who can boast a massive 689 games as a manager in the Italian top-flight. Trapattoni took charge of Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan, Cagliari and Fiorentina during a career that also saw him manage in Germany with Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart, Portugal with Benfica, and Austria with Red Bull Salzburg. It was during his time in Salzburg that he was approached by the FAI to manage Ireland, a role that he held from 2008 to 2013, and included qualification to Euro 2012. Gasperini's career in the dugout began in the underage ranks at Juventus. His first senior role came in 2003 with Crotone in Serie C1. He moved to Serie A in 2006 when he was appointed Genoa boss, and he went on to manage Inter Milan, Palermo, Genoa again, Atalanta and now Roma. At Atalanta he won the 2023/24 Europa League in Dublin, beating Bayer Leverkusen. Other managers to pass the 600-mark are Carlo Mazzone (792), Nereo Rocco (747) and Nils Liedholm (635). Gasperini gave Ferguson, a loan signing from Brighton, another pre-season run-out on Saturday in Roma's 2-2 draw with Saudi side Neom. Ferguson played the first-half before being replaced at the break by Artem Dovbyk. His managerial style is widely expected to bring the best out of the Irish youngster, as he favours a pressing game and has already spoken positively about Ferguson's abilities in that regard. And recently, former Ireland striker Clinton Morrison gave his verdict on the influence Gasperini could have on the 20-year-old. 'It's geared up for him. Gasperini is a top manager,' said Morrison. 'Look at what he did at Atalanta. Just look at (Ademola) Lookman, Gasparini took his game to another level. Now every big club wants Lookman. 'Roma have gained a fantastic manager, and Atalanta have lost one. Ferguson will come on leaps and bounds under him. 'When you have a manager making those kinds of quotes about you as a striker - which I was - it gives you confidence. 'That's what Ferguson needs; an arm around the shoulder, a bit of love, and he'll score goals. Most strikers need that.'
