Israel says it has taken first steps of military operation in Gaza City, ‘IDF holding positions on the outskirts'

Israel's military on Wednesday announced that it has taken the first steps in the planned operation to take over Gaza City.
'We have begun the preliminary operations and the first stages of the attack on Gaza City, and already now IDF forces are holding the outskirts of Gaza City,' Brigadier General Effie Defrin, Israel's military spokesman, said.
Following a clash with Hamas south of Khan Younis in the strip on Wednesday, he said: 'We will deepen the attack on Hamas in Gaza City, a stronghold of governmental and military terror for the terrorist organization.'
'While operating in Gaza, we are also continuing offensive and defensive activities on the Lebanese border, in Syria and in Judea and Samaria. We continue to monitor developments in Iran,' Defrin said further.
Earlier in the day, the Israeli military said that Defence Minister Yoav Gallant had approved plans for a new phase of operations and 60,000 reservists would be called up.
According to the military, the reserve soldiers would not report for duty until September, an interval that was expected to give the mediators some time to bridge gaps between Hamas and Israel over truce terms.
However, after Israeli troops clashed with Hamas fighters in the Palestinian enclave on Wednesday, Benjamin Netanyahu's office said the Prime Minister sped up the timeline for taking control of Hamas strongholds and defeating the militant group.
Israel has been under increasing international criticism, including from some of its closest allies, over its plan to seize Gaza's biggest urban centre, an operation likely to force the displacement of many more Palestinians.
Israel currently holds about 75% of the Gaza Strip and Netanyahu has said that his country was not looking to occupy the region, but to 'free it from Hamas'.
Before the war broke out, the Gaza Strip was home to about 2.3 million Palestinians, including many who were displaced in previous conflicts. Israel has accused Hamas of operating from within civilian infrastructure in Gaza including including homes, schools, hospitals and mosques, many of which have been destroyed since the conflict started nearly two years ago.
The war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, as a retaliation for the Hamas cross-border terror attack in Israel that left around 1,200 people dead.
Over 62,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's air and ground war in Gaza since then, according to Gaza health officials.
Various international efforts, including those by Israel's close allies and Arab nations, have so far failed to end the killings and free around 50 hostages, who are still being held in Gaza by Hamas.
On Monday, Hamas accepted a proposal put forward by Arab mediators, Egypt and Qatar for a 60-day ceasefire that would involve releasing some of the remaining hostages and freeing Palestinian prisoners in Israel.
The Israeli government, which insists on the release of all the 50 remaining hostages at once, has not commented on the ceasefire deal, saying it is studying the proposal. Israeli authorities believe that 20 hostages are still alive.

Netanyahu now wants war's end, ties it to Gaza takeover and hostage deal

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday, August 21, that he visited the Gaza Division to approve the Israeli Defence Force's plans to seize control of Gaza City and defeat Hamas. He added that he had also instructed officials to begin immediate negotiations for the release of all hostages and to work toward ending the war under terms acceptable to Israel. "I came today to the Gaza Division in order to approve the plans that the IDF presented to me and to the defense minister for taking control of Gaza City and for defeating Hamas," Netanyahu said. "At the same time, I instructed to begin immediate negotiations for the release of all our hostages and for ending the war under conditions acceptable to Israel," he added. The announcement by Netanyahu came several days after Hamas said it had agreed to a ceasefire proposal that would see half of the hostages released and kick off talks to end the war and free the rest. This also came just as Netanyahu has approved the plans for the military takeover of the Gaza city. Although Jerusalem had earlier approved the framework, Netanyahu has now insisted that Israel will halt fighting only as part of a comprehensive deal covering all 50 remaining captives. It remains unclear whether his Thursday remarks signaled any real shift in the negotiations. A spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office told Times of Israel that there were no immediate plans to dispatch an Israeli delegation, while a senior official later clarified that envoys would be sent once a venue for the talks was decided. The deal pushed by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, would commit the terror group to release 10 living hostages and the bodies of 18 of the slain hostages in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire and release of hundreds of Palestinian security prisoners. It was proposed that during the ceasefire, talks would begin for a permanent end to the war and the release of the remaining 22 hostages, Times of Israel reported. Israel had earlier approved a similar framework but has yet to respond to the offer. Netanyahu has not rejected the framework leaving open the possibility of both a negotiated settlement and a military escalation.

Hell Gaza

Israel is tearing apart Palestine. US is okay with it. Other countries are only saying nice things As Israel begins its operation to occupy Gaza City with its 1mn residents, the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave can only get worse. The situation in Gaza is already dire after nearly two years of the conflict. Mass starvation deaths – including those of children – are being reported. Almost all of Gaza has been flattened by the Israeli military, which now occupies 75% of the enclave. Aid into Gaza is down to a trickle thanks to Israel's restrictions. Yet, the Israeli war cabinet voted earlier this month to authorise the operation against Gaza city, despite reservations by Israel's military chief. This clearly shows that Netanyahu and his ultra-right-wing coalition will stop at nothing to demolish the idea of a Palestine state. In fact, troubling measures are afoot in West Bank as well. This week, a controversial construction project that would see the building of 3,400 housing units and practically bisect West Bank was approved by Israeli authorities. Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotrich called the project a significant step that erases the 'two-state delusion'. All of this is being done with the concurrence of US. Note, Hamas recently accepted a new ceasefire proposal that would release 10 living hostages. But Netanyahu has decided to ignore this and move ahead with the Gaza City operation. Of course, Trump can bring Tel Aviv to heel if he wants to. But his MAGA base is against this. Arab leaders, meanwhile, appear to be only expressing concern for Palestinians. Some Arab regimes may not be too unhappy if Tel Aviv 'makes' the Palestine 'issue' go away. US also is using Israel to make strategic gains in West Asia – remember Syria, Lebanon, Iran – at the expense of Russia, which is stuck in the Ukraine war. As these international strategic games go on, Palestinians are bearing the brunt of IDF attacks. They have been reduced to subhuman conditions as much of the world sheds tears but professes helplessness. Macron also called Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who offered to host Russia-Ukraine peace talks. 'Had a very good conversation with my friend President Macron. Exchanged views on efforts for peaceful resolution of conflicts in Ukraine and in West Asia. Reaffirmed our commitment to further strengthen the India-France strategic partnership,' Modi said on social media. Macron said in a social media post that he and Modi 'coordinated our positions on the war in Ukraine in order to move towards a just and lasting peace, with strong guarantees for Ukraine and Europe's security'. A readout from the Indian government said Macron shared his assessment of recent meetings between the leaders of Europe, the US and Ukraine in Washington, and his perspectives on the situation in Gaza. Modi reiterated India's 'consistent support for peaceful resolution of the conflicts and early restoration of peace and stability', the readout said. The two leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, civil nuclear cooperation, technology and energy and pledged to strengthen the bilateral strategic partnership. Macron conveyed his support for the early conclusion of a free trade agreement between India and the European Union. Macron added on social media that the two sides agreed to strengthen economic exchanges and the strategic partnership in all areas as this is the 'key to our sovereignty and independence'. 'Following up on the AI Action Summit held in Paris last February, we are working towards the success of the AI Impact Summit to be held in New Delhi in 2026,' he said. The two sides will also work closely to prepare for the French presidency of the G7 and the Indian presidency of Brics in 2026 for more effective multilateralism, he added.
