Woman charged with attempted murder for ramming into policeman
Cham Shan Jer, 31, is accused of ramming her car into Cpl Muhamad Fahrulradi Sabran on Jalan Usahawan 6, Setapak, around 11.15pm on Aug 1.
She was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison term of 10 years and a fine. If the act causes injury, the penalty can extend to 20 years' imprisonment, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Ikhwan Mohd Nasir objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the case involving an alleged attempt to kill a police officer.
However, defence counsel Nurul Fatihah Abdul Ghani urged the court to grant bail, citing that her client, a single mother of three, also cares for her elderly parents.
"My client is a single mother. We request bail to be set at the lowest possible amount,' she said.
Judge Dr Azrol Abdullah denied bail and fixed Sept 23 for case mention and submission of documents. - Bernama

China national fined RM25,000 for harbouring illegals

In default of payment, Li will face six months' imprisonment per charge. Li was found to have allowed five Filipino nationals — two women and three men, aged between 18 and 48 — who lacked valid travel documents, to remain at the Liubaba Lease premises in Taman Emas, Jalan Penampang, around 9.10pm on July 10 this year. The offence falls under Section 55E(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and is punishable under Section 55E(2) of the same Act. The law provides for a fine between RM5,000 and RM30,000, or imprisonment of up to 12 months, or both, for each illegal immigrant found on the premises. In mitigation, Li appealed for leniency. However, Prosecuting Officer Mohd Sharifuddin Salim urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence to serve as a deterrent. In a separate case in the same court, four Filipino nationals were jailed four months each after pleading guilty to entering the State without valid travel documents. Nanette Sapnay Pili, Cherry Mae Sampung Bernardino, Junaida Omar, and Kc Marwuez Sanchez were arrested during an Immigration enforcement operation at an entertainment outlet in Tanjung Aru at 1.20am on Aug 3. The four failed to produce valid identification documents during the operation. The court ordered their sentences to run from the date of their arrest. Contractor fined for failing to appear as witness

Kota Kinabalu: A 44-year-old contractor was fined RM3,000 by the Sessions Court here for failing to appear as a witness at the Immigration Department office in Kudat. Liew Ket Vui pleaded guilty before Judge Hurman Hussain to the charge of failing to comply with a summons without reasonable excuse. The court ordered that he serve six months' jail in default of payment. Liew paid the fine. According to the facts of the case, Liew failed to present himself at the Kudat Immigration office at 9am on June 3 this year, as required in a summons issued to him in connection with an investigation. The offence falls under Section 40(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and is punishable under Section 57 of the same Act, which provides for a fine of up to RM10,000, or imprisonment of up to one year, or both, on conviction. Liew, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency. However, Prosecuting Officer Mohd Sharifuddin Salim urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence to serve as a lesson not only to the accused but also to the general public, emphasising the importance of complying with lawful instructions from enforcement authorities. The court heard that Liew had been summoned to provide a statement in relation to the arrest of several of his workers at a construction site. Police nab four over armed brawl in Jasin
JASIN: Police have arrested four men for allegedly rioting with a wooden stick and an industrial extension wire by the roadside of Jalan Jasin-Bemban here yesterday. Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said in the 9 am incident, the suspects, aged between 20 and 57, were among seven men believed to be involved in the riot, following an accident involving three vehicles. 'Bemban police station received a call around 9 am from a man reporting an accident along the road. The caller also mentioned seeing a man wielding a wooden stick. 'It is believed that the altercation involved seven men as well as an accident with three vehicles, namely a Volkswagen Passat and a Mitsubishi Triton belonging to the group, and a Toyota Vios owned by a member of the public,' he said in a statement today. He said following the brawl, five suspects fled the scene in a dark silver Proton Exora with an unidentified registration number, leaving the Mitsubishi Triton abandoned at the roadside. Dzulkhairi said two suspects were arrested at the scene, while another two were detained later in the compound of the Jasin District Police Headquarters. Initial checks revealed that a 20-year-old suspect had four previous criminal records. However, all suspects tested negative for drugs. 'Further investigations are underway to track down the remaining three suspects. The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting in a public place,' he said. - Bernama
