Gold Cup 2025: Diego Luna brace helps USA past Guatemala, secure place in final
Luna tallied in the fourth and 15th minutes before Olger Escobar made it 2-1 in the 80th minute.
American goalkeeper Matt Freese made five saves, including a diving stop at the left post on Joe Morales in the second minute of second-half stoppage time.
The U.S. will play either Honduras or Mexico, who play later Thursday, on Sunday in Houston.
Luna, a 5-foot-8 Real Salt Lake midfielder, scored his first U.S. goal on Sunday against Costa Rica and leads the team in goal contributions in 2025 with seven (three goals, four assists).
At this time a year ago, he was miffed that he was not selected of the U.S. Olympic team for the Paris Games.
Now, he is a mainstay, at least for this iteration of a team that does not include most of the European-based players. Still, Luna appears to be playing his way onto the roster for the 2026 World Cup.
He opened the scoring with his quick reaction to rebound of a long shot by Luca de la Torre. Goalkeeper Kenderson Navarro fumbled the ball straight to Luna, who brought it down with his right foot before delivering a left-footed strike.

Luna silenced the pro-Guatemala even further with his laser from 22 yards after taking a pass from Malik Tillman.
The desperate Guatemalans dominated the rest of the half, outshooting the U.S. 12-2 over the final 20 minutes.
Navarro was the story early in the second half as the U.S. looked for a third goal. First, he parried a header by Patrick Agyemang in the 62nd minute, then two minutes later Agyemang broke free but couldn't get the ball past the keeper.
The saves proved huge when Escobar dribbled to the top of the box and slipped a shot through several Americans.
This was the nations' first-ever meeting in a Gold Cup knockout round and Guatemala's first appearance in a Gold Cup semifinal since 1996.

Liverpool soccer player Diogo Jota was killed in a car crash on July 3, along with his brother, Andre Silva. Both of them were in a Lamborghini on the A-52 motorway in Spain when a tire burst, causing the car to veer off course and catch fire. Both Diogo and Andre died by the time help could arrive. Diogo Jota was a high-profile rising star, with his signing with Liverpool in 2020 making him a big player in the English Premier League. However, his brother, Andre Silva, was also a capable and well-known footballer in his own right. Diogo's brother, Andre Silva, died at 25 Diogo Jota's brother André Silva, 25-year-old Penafiel player in Portuguese 2nd League, has also passed away following the in peace, André. 🕊️ Andre Silva was born on 28 April 2000, and he's Diogo's younger brother by an age gap of 3-4 years. Both Andre and Diogo are natives of Portugal and got their start in local Portuguese football leagues. However, unlike his brother, Andre was still focusing on Portuguese football at the time of his death. Andre's full name is André Filipe Teixeira da Silva, and he's been confused with another Portuguese footballer in the past, also named Andre Silva, who's played as a forward for RB Leipzig in Germany. André Filipe Teixeira da Silva, by contrast, was an attacking midfielder for Liga Portugal 2's Penafiel at the time of his death. Prior to this, Andre had played for the Gondomer Sport Club and FC Porto. Andre had attended his brother's wedding AC Milan is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva. Our heartfelt condolences go out to their family, friends, and all who are mourning. May they rest in peace. Andre Silva didn't share as much time in the spotlight as his more high-profile brother. However, the two siblings appear to have been incredibly close. Andre and Diogo had often shared vacations and training sessions with each other. This extended to Diogo's high-profile wedding to Rute Cardoso, which Andre Silva attended, just ten days before the car accident that would kill them both. While Diogo Jota is survived by his wife and the three children he's had with her, Andre Silva had no publicly known partner or spouse at the time of his death. Nonetheless, many of Diogo's friends and colleagues have included Andre Silva in their tributes which mourn the star footballer's untimely demise.
