KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday announced to launch a new programme namely 'Amader Para Amader Samadhan' (Our Neighbourhood Our Solution). The program is aimed at addressing issues in various localities, both in urban and rural areas across the state.
The project with an allocation of Rs 8,000 crore will commence from August 2 and be completed within 60 days.
Banerjee said, 'We will be launching a small project 'Amader Para, Amader Samadhan'. A dedicated task force will be formed, headed by the Chief Secretary, to monitor it. Task forces will be constituted at both district and state levels. Police will also be involved to maintain law and order and ensure smooth coordination and implementation.'
According to political observers, the government has decided to launch this new programme with an eye on the Assembly elections, due next year.
Claiming that 'Amader Para, Amader Samadhan' is a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, the Chief Minister explained, 'Many times, we notice that there are small issues — like setting up a tap or an electric pole — that need attention in localities. We have provided electricity to many areas, but by chance, some places may have been left out. For such minor issues, we are taking up this programme.'

Cops bust fake embassy in Ghaziabad; man running 'West Arctica' consulate arrested

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh Police's Special Task Force has unearthed a fake embassy operating in Ghaziabad and has arrested a man who ran the "consulate" while claiming to be a diplomat of non-existent "West Arctica", a senior official said on Wednesday. The accused, Harsh Vardhan Jain, a resident of Kavi Nagar in Ghaziabad, was arrested on Tuesday. According to the STF's Noida unit, preliminary investigations suggest that Jain was engaged in brokering deals by falsely promising job placements for companies and individuals in foreign countries. He is also suspected to be involved in running a hawala racket through shell companies, the agency said, adding the accused used morphed photos showing him with the prime minister, the president, and other dignitaries to mislead people. Additional Director General of Police Amitabh Yash said the accused was running the bogus embassy from a rented house and projected himself as a consul or ambassador of non-existent countries such as West Arctica, Saborga, Poulvia, and Lodonia, and moved around in vehicles bearing fake diplomatic number plates. Interrogation revealed that the accused had associations with controversial godman Chandraswami and international arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi in the past. In 2011, Jain was booked in a case related to the recovery of an illegal satellite phone. Following his arrest on Tuesday, four vehicles bearing fake diplomatic number plates, 12 forged diplomatic passports of the so-called micronations, fake documents stamped with the seal of the Ministry of External Affairs, two forged PAN cards, 34 rubber stamps of various countries and companies and two fake press cards have been seized. The STF also recovered Rs 44.7 lakh in cash, foreign currency, documents related to multiple companies, and 18 fake diplomatic number plates. An FIR has been lodged at Kavi Nagar police station, and further proceedings are underway, the agency said.

Robbing poor to benefit rich is Modi government's mantra: Congress on loan write-offs by PSBs

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Wednesday accused the government of distributing "freebies" worth Rs 12 lakh crore to its billionaire friends through loan write-offs over the past nine years, and said "robbing the poor to benefit the rich" is the Narendra Modi dispensation's mantra. The opposition party's attack came over the government's reply in the Rajya Sabha that public sector banks (PSBs) have written off an aggregate loan amount of Rs 12,08,828 crore, from the financial year 2015-16 to the financial year 2024-25 (provisional data). In a post in Hindi on X, Kharge said, "The Modi government has distributed 'freebies' worth 12 lakh crore to its billionaire friends through loan write-offs over the past nine years." Economic inequality in the country is at its peak in 100 years, yet the Modi government is squandering lakhs of crores from public sector banks on its "friends", the Congress president alleged. "Robbing the poor to benefit the rich is the core mantra of the Modi government's economic policy!" he claimed. In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, Minister of State in the Finance Ministry Pankaj Chaudhary said, "As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, public sector banks (PSBs) have written-off an aggregate loan amount of Rs. 12,08,828 crore, from the financial year 2015-16 to financial year 2024-25 (provisional data)." "Banks write off non-performing assets (NPAs), including, inter alia, those in respect of which full provisioning has been made on completion of four years, as per RBI guidelines and policy approved by banks' Boards. Such write-off does not result in waiver of liabilities of borrowers and therefore, it does not benefit the borrower," the minister said. The borrowers continue to be liable for repayment, and banks continue to pursue recovery actions initiated in these accounts, he had said.
