How Indians used UPI in July
UPI transactions showed that groceries and supermarkets led the way with over 3 billion transactions. Representation image
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) released its list of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions for the first time on Sunday (August 11). According to the NPCI data, Indians conduct UPI transactions for mostly paying for groceries, mobile network bills, restaurants and service stations.
UPI transactions in July showed that groceries and supermarkets led the way with over 3 billion transactions worth Rs 64,882 crore. In comparison, fast food restaurants recorded 1.22 billion UPI transactions, and other eating joints and restaurants saw 1.15 billion.

The top five categories by volume were groceries, fast food, other restaurants, telecom services, and fuel stations. By value, the leading categories were debt collection, groceries, fuel stations, utility payments, and phone recharges.

In the National Achievement Survey 2024, Punjab's education system ranked first, surpassing states like Kerala. This year, 848 govt school students qualified for NEET, 265 for JEE (Main) and 45 for JEE (Advanced). In the health sector, the finance minister announced revolutionary changes. Currently, 881 Aam Aadmi clinics are operational, offering 107 types of medicines and 47 lab tests free of cost. He also announced that a health insurance scheme of up to Rs 10 lakh for every family will be implemented from Oct 2. This scheme, which requires only an Aadhaar and voter card to avail, will cover medical expenses for all citizens of Punjab, regardless of income. Around 3 crore people are expected to benefit from this initiative, which includes impanelment of 552 private and all govt hospitals, with plans to add 500 more hospitals soon. Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) is set to transfer 76 supervisors following persistent complaints of collusion with contractors in facilitating illegal construction. Residents also allege that supervisors, working in tandem with private builders, demand hefty sums to overlook unauthorised floors. GDA has around 200 supervisors in the seven zones under it, but its manual does not specify a maximum tenure for postings before an employee can be shifted. Many of the supervisors on the list have been posted in the same zone for more than five years. Officials admitted that supervisors posted in the same zones for years had formed "unholy alliances" with local realtors, and said the reshuffle aimed to curb the spread of illegal colonies, which have risen from 321 in 2021 to 351, occupying around 3,000 acres. "We hired a private contractor, prepared a cost estimate, and even had construction material delivered," he said. But that evening, a GDA supervisor reached their house and warned the family that the work violated regulations. Unsure how to proceed, the family considered abandoning the plan. "But the contractor assured me it could be 'managed' for Rs 40,000. Construction went ahead without further interference. Only later did I realise the nexus between contractors and supervisors," he added. According to a GDA official, despite checks and balances, illegal construction has been unabated in the city. "We deduced that many of the supervisors are working in the same zone for years and have developed a nexus with contractors, allowing illegal construction. This nexus needs to be broken, for which GDA has prepared a list of 76 supervisors who will be transferred to other zones."
