Maldives President visits PETRONAS Twin Towers
KUALA LUMPUR: Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who is on a four-day official visit to Malaysia, visited the iconic Petronas Twin Towers on Tuesday (April 29).
Muizzu and his delegation arrived at 9.30am and were welcomed by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and PERONAS' Malaysia Petroleum Management senior vice-president Datuk Bacho Pilong.
Muizzu spent over an hour touring the sky bridge and observation deck, which are popular tourist attractions at the towers.
Muizzu was briefed by Safful Bahari Din, the manager of Visit Management Services, Petronas Twin Towers, about the architectural history of the world's tallest twin towers.
On Monday (April 28), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Muizzu witnessed the exchange of three Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) and two Exchange of Notes (EON) covering various sectors, aimed at strengthening cooperation in various fields for mutual benefit.
Muizzu arrived on Sunday (April 27) at the invitation of the Prime Minister, marking his first official visit to Malaysia since assuming office as Maldives President in November 2023.
In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with the Maldives increased by 4.3 per cent to RM862.7mil (USD189mil) from RM827.3mil (USD180.9mil) in 2023, making the archipelagic state Malaysia's sixth largest trading partner among South Asian countries. – Bernama

Sabah named ‘Malaysia's Most Outstanding State' for 2024

(Wikipedia pic) PETALING JAYA : Sabah has made its mark by being named 'Malaysia's Most Outstanding State' for 2024 at the International Business Review (IBR) Asean Awards 2025. Former Petagas assemblyman James Ligunjang said that for the first time, the awards extended recognition to state governments, acknowledging exceptional leadership and accomplishments at the state level alongside corporate achievements. Ligunjang said in a statement that under chief minister Hajiji Noor's leadership, Sabah had received the highest honour for implementing the Sabah Maju Jaya development framework. The framework centres on four pillars: championing Sabah's rights, leading with integrity and efficiency, fostering development aligned with the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030, and maintaining unity among the state's diverse communities. He said key achievements that contributed to the recognition include an increase in federal special grants from RM26 million in 2022 to RM600 million in 2025, and a 47% rise in foreign tourist arrivals, boosting the state's revenue. Other highlights include a substantial stake in oil and gas revenues from the commercial cooperation agreement with Petronas, yielding over RM3 billion in 2023, as well as foreign investments soaring from RM132 million in 2023 to over RM1 billion in 2024. Ligunjang also cited progress on the Pan-Borneo Highway, linking major cities and rural areas, as a key achievement by the state. He said that Azman Ujang, a chief judge of the awards, also highlighted Sabah's potential in economic development and environmental sustainability. 'He noted increased foreign investment interest, with investments rising from RM132.7 million in 2023 to RM1.07 billion in 2024, and praised the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park's record-high occupancy rate of 90% with 288 active investors. 'Sabah also achieved the highest manufacturing sector growth rate in Malaysia at 4.4% in 2023,' Ligunjang said. He said Azman had also emphasised the state's focus on human capital development and environmental conservation, with 62% of Sabah's land, amounting to 4.6 million hectares, declared free of logging, as part of long-term sustainability strategies. The official awards ceremony is scheduled to be held on July 19, at the Sabah International Convention Centre, Kota Kinabalu, with Hajiji expected to attend as an honorary guest. Ligunjang said the award was announced by the event's secretariat, which also honoured Negeri Sembilan as Malaysia's 'Most Progressive State' for 2024.

PETRONAS ramps up global LNG push to support China's energy transition

In 2024, PETRONAS exported 8 million metric tons of LNG to China, accounting for about 10 percent of the country's total LNG imports for the year, according to the Kuala Lumpur-headquartered company. In addition to ensuring long-term supply capability from its LNG complex by developing several new gas fields in Malaysia, including Timi, Kasawari and Jerun, PETRONAS will advance additional upstream projects such as the Rosmari and Marjoram fields, aimed at bolstering production capacity and meeting future demand, said Shamsairi Ibrahim, vice-president of PETRONAS' LNG marketing and trading, gas and maritime business. "Internationally, we are broadening our supply network, particularly in North America. A key milestone will be the first LNG cargo from our joint venture in Alberta-based LNG Canada, expected by mid-2025," said Ibrahim. Once operational, the project is expected to add 14 million metric tons per annum to PETRONAS' global LNG portfolio, significantly strengthening its export capacity and diversifying its supply base. To better serve Chinese clients and address global LNG demand in a more sustainable way, the company is also enhancing its delivery capabilities. This includes deploying three new LNG vessels to improve shipments to Shenergy Group's Wuhaogou terminal in Shanghai and to supply inland cities along the Yangtze River via creative pipeline systems. PETRONAS' efforts are further supported by its partnership with Tiger Gas, a Shanghai-based company with multiple investments in Malaysia, including LNG filling facilities in Bintulu. The collaboration enhances cross-border LNG infrastructure and reinforces shared commitments to clean energy development. One of the key outcomes of this collaboration is the development of a specially designed LNG vessel capable of carrying around 600 containers. Unlike conventional LNG carriers that require deep-water ports, this vessel can navigate directly into the Yangtze River, expanding LNG accessibility across China's non-coastal regions. Apart from LNG, the Malaysian energy group also supplies petrochemicals, crude oil and lubricants to the Chinese market. It is advancing marine LNG solutions such as bunkering services and expanding its LNG fleet with new LNG carriers. Four of these vessels are currently under construction at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co Ltd, a major shipyard based in Shanghai. Ibrahim noted that geopolitical uncertainties and rising energy security concerns have prompted many countries, including China, to prioritize domestic energy sources. This trend has introduced greater caution around long-term LNG contracts and tempered appetite for new import commitments, creating a more complex and unpredictable global LNG market. "Despite these challenges, PETRONAS remains confident in the value of its differentiated LNG and clean energy portfolio," he said, stressing that the company believes its continued commitment to providing reliable, sustainable energy solutions aligns well with China's long-term energy transition strategy. - China Daily/ANN

Sarawak defends gas rights in court battle with Petronas

Petros seeks to nullify a RM7.95 million bank guarantee claim by Petronas, calling it 'unconscionable and illegal.' Advertisement Amicus curiae Datuk Seri J.C. Fong emphasized that under the SGSA and the Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016 (DGO), Petronas must recognize Petros as Sarawak's sole gas aggregator. He accused Petronas of bypassing legal obligations, obstructing licensed suppliers, and undermining Petros' statutory role. Fong dismissed Petronas' reliance on the Petroleum Development Act 1974, stating the SGSA is a standalone commercial agreement and does not supersede Sarawak's constitutional rights over gas regulation.
