Scientists just created a biodegradable battery using mushrooms — and it actually works
That's because the researchers have successfully created a fungal device that can power small sensors, functioning as a "living battery." It's part of fascinating findings from Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, that showcase the untapped power of the fungal community.
Empa's team noted that various kinds of organisms can produce pathogens, while others can provide medicines. When it comes to electricity, two types have been combined to turn nutrients into energy. The non-toxic, puck-shaped power-maker then safely "digests itself" after its work is complete. Use examples include powering small sensors, or temperature monitors, for a couple of days, according to an Empa news release.
The fungi are combined with "ink" and formed into a battery using a 3D printer, a process highlighted in an Empa video clip.
"For the first time, we have combined two types of fungi to create a functioning fuel cell," Empa researcher Carolina Reyes said in the release.
Some of the battery parts will sound familiar to anyone with knowledge of common lithium-ion tech. A yeast fungus serves as the anode, with a metabolism that releases electrons. A white rot fungus forms the cathode. It makes a "special enzyme" that captures electrons, conducting them out of the cell, according to the Empa experts.
"You can store the fungal batteries in a dried state and activate them on location by simply adding water and nutrients," Reyes said. The report added that simple sugars are good nutrient sources, essentially feeding the fungi as part of the electricity-generating process.
Crafting an ink that maximized fungal conductivity was a challenge. Cellulose was found to be a suitable base. What's more, the fungi use it in the biodegradable process that ends the cell's functional life, according to the release.
The ink "has to be easy to extrude without killing the cells — and of course we want it to be electrically conductive and biodegradable," lab head Gustav Nyström said.

Mushrooms are getting attention in other sectors, too. In the U.K., a Newcastle University team is working on a fungus-based concrete alternative. A project in Namibia is using the organism in a process to make a cleaner brick.
While small, the fungal batteries are evidence that the next energy-transforming innovation could come from an unlikely place. A salt battery in China can amazingly power 12,000 homes, for example. It's all part of the way our power system can operate with a reduced amount of heat-trapping air pollution as a harmful byproduct.
It's important that we reduce and eliminate planet-warming gases, which are linked by NASA and other experts to greater risks for severe weather and a range of human medical concerns, including lung and heart ailments.

Archaeology student from Florida finds rare 9th-century gold during her first excavation in U.K.
An American archaeology student on her first-ever dig found a rare piece of 9th-century gold. Yara Souza, who is from Orlando, Florida, is an international student at Newcastle University in the U.K. She was part of a July excavation in Redesdale, Northumberland, in northeastern England when she made the discovery about 90 minutes into her excavation, the university announced. "I couldn't believe I'd found something so quickly into my first ever excavation," Souza said in a press release. "After I'd had to miss Birdoswald last year, it was amazing to discover something that hasn't been seen for more than a thousand years, I was really geeking out over it." Birdoswald Roman Fort is another excavation that Newcastle University students participated in last year. According to the university, the early medieval object – about 1.5 inches long with a decorative finial at one end – was buried close to the route of Dere Street, a major Roman road which ran between York, England and Edinburgh, Scotland. Dere Street was still used after the fall of the Roman Empire and went on to become part of the modern-day A68 highway. The archaeology students, alongside archaeologists from North East Museums, were investigating the location as it was the site of a chance discovery of a similar object in 2021. "This is an exciting find of exceptional quality," said Newcastle University archaeology professor James Gerrard. "We know that Dere Street continued to be a major thoroughfare long after the Romans and it's clear from this discovery that high status people were using it." According to the university, gold was considered high status and was only used by the elite. Experts involved in the excavation believe the object found by Souza and the one discovered in 2021 could have had a religious or ceremonial use. "It is possible that this pair of objects may have been deliberately buried," Gerrad added. The piece will be further analyzed and could eventually go on display at a local museum.

Why Glacial Lake Outbursts Like the One in Alaska May Happen More Often
Meltwater from a glacier outburst near Juneau, Alaska, is flooding nearby neighborhoods, with officials urging some residents of the city of 30,000 to evacuate. The meltwater is rushing downstream from Suicide Basin, a basin of water dammed in by the Mendenhall Glacier. As of 6:00 A.M. local time on Wednesday morning, the Mendenhall River was in a major flood stage. At 16.17 feet (4.93 meters) and rising, the water level had passed the record flood stage of 15.99 feet (4.87 m) that hit during a 2024 glacial outburst flood, according to the National Weather Service. Mendenhall Lake and River, both downstream from the glacier's tongue, are under a flood warning. The NWS predicts the river will crest at up to 16.75 feet (5.1 m) Wednesday around 8 A.M. local time. Glacial outburst floods happen when the ice dams holding back glacial lakes fail, allowing a sudden release of water. They're unpredictable and happen without warning. A 2023 study found that globally, 15 million people live in areas that could flood. More than half of people in at-risk areas are in India, Pakistan, China, and Peru. And with a warming climate, ice is becoming more unstable and glacial lakes are growing—a 2020 study based on satellite imagery found that between 1990 and 2018, the volume of water dammed in glacial lakes had grown 48 percent. Suicide Basin has flooded before. In fact, according to the NWS, the basin has released an outburst flood at least once a year since 2011. These floods have now set a record three years in a row: In 2023, the river crested at 14.97 feet (4.56 m) after an outburst, a record exceeded just a year later in the August 2024 flood. Residents had to evacuate by inflatable boat in the middle of the night during the 2024 outburst, according to the Red Cross. Now, only a year after that disaster, the river is setting a new record. It's a threat glaciologists in mountainous areas around the world are trying to better understand, Fabian Walter, a senior scientist at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL told Scientific American in 2020. "These glaciated mountain faces were more or less stable,' Walter said. 'And now, with climate change, the whole stability is changing."
