Study: Californians are moving to new Texas city
Texas is 16.2 percent cheaper than California overall, which is likely why an average of 260 residents of the West Coast state are migrating to Texas every single day in search of less expensive housing, lower state taxes and cheaper groceries. While Houston has the highest population of all Texas cities with 2.3 million inhabitants, it's not the most popular choice for Californians who are fleeing the state. Austin is the fifth most inhabited state, with a population of 989,000 (below San Antonio, Dallas and Fort Worth), but it's been the top pick for those coming from the Golden State.
Data shows that 10,633 Californians moved to Austin in 2023, and most of them were millennials. However people are already beginning to sour on Austin , while Houston is climbing the ranks in popularity. Houston's Harris County was found to be the second most sought-out destination among Californians. Housing in Houston is 60 percent cheaper than on the West Coast and renting is 30 percent cheaper.
The city's economic diversity is also an appealing factor, with energy, manufacturing, aerospace and tech industries all having a presence. Podcasting titan Joe Rogan led the charge of people fleeing to Texas when he moved from Los Angeles to Houston with his family in 2020. Many of them followed him, but came to regret the decision. Comedian Tim Dillon moved to Austin in August 2020, but left by the end of the year after discovering that the city didn't have enough good restaurants.
'It's a horrible city without a soul,' he told fellow comedian Whitney Cummings. 'It's not the live music capital of America. It's three heroin addicts busking with guitars. There's zero talent here in any capacity,' he raged. 'There's three restaurants that are good and I've been to all of them twice.' He said on the H3 podcast that Austin 'can't be compared to New York and Los Angeles'.
Comedian and MMA fighter Brendan Schaub, another one of Rogan's friends, ended up regretting moving from Los Angeles to Austin. The 42–year–old relocated his family to the city earlier this year, but confessed on his Fighter and the Kid podcast that he was 'heartbroken' about leaving Los Angeles and said he misses the city. 'I miss my community and my routine,' he admitted.
Shane Gillis, who moved to Austin in 2023 because Texas has no state income tax, told fellow comedian Andrew Schulz 'Texas [expletive] blows.' He repeatedly complained about the homeless situation in Austin, calling the drug–crazed vagrants in town 'screaming runners.' Not only are Rogan's friends regretting their move to Austin, other celebrities and influencers who migrated are having second thoughts too.
Transgender conservative influencer Blaire White announced that she was leaving Texas after four years to return to her home state of California. The 31–year–old left her Hollywood home in 2021 amid rising homelessness and moved to Austin, 'California in my opinion is the most beautiful place in the world. Yes, I said the world. Yes, I said the world. And it's even more of a shame because of that that it's run by demons.'
Male model Lucky Blue Smith and his influencer wife Nara, who is famous for her trad wife content , left Los Angeles in 2022 to move to Dallas. However, within just two years the couple announced that they were leaving the city to live in Connecticut so that they could be closer to New York. In a TikTok video, Nara said that living in Connecticut would allow the couple to own a large house where they could raise their family, while still 'being closer to a bigger city for all the work that we do.'
It's not only celebrities who have complaints. Jian Jiao moved from the Bay Area to Austin in 2021 , and his friend told him, 'You'll hate Austin. It's hot, boring, and there's no Asian population.' Two years later, he laid out the pros and cons of the city. His cons were bad traffic, roadwork, hard and expensive to find plumbers and electricians. Jiao said the seasons were so extreme that icy winters caused damage to pipes and cause trees to fall, meanwhile summers were so hot his kids couldn't play outside.

Epstein scandal broadens as trove of letters from famous figures published
The long-running scandal surrounding the disgraced late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein broadened on Tuesday after the New York Times published a trove of previously unseen letters to Epstein from numerous powerful figures as well as unseen photographs from inside his Manhattan mansion. The letters, written to Epstein by a number of high-profile individuals, were reportedly compiled as a birthday gift for Epstein's 63rd birthday in 2016. Their publication comes amid intense speculation around Donald Trump's ties to Epstein, who was found dead in a New York jail in 2019 and had long cultivated a celebrity social circle of the rich and powerful. In one letter, former prime minister of Israel Ehud Barak and his wife wrote 'there is no limit to your curiosity.' 'You are like a closed book to many of them but you know everything about everyone,' they wrote, describing Epstein as 'A COLLECTOR OF PEOPLE.' They continued: 'May you enjoy long and healthy life and may all of us, your friends, enjoy your table for many more years to come.' In a letter from film-maker Woody Allen, Allen reminisced about Epstein's dinner parties at his Upper East Side townhouse and described the gatherings as 'always interesting'. He noted that the parties included 'politicians, scientists, teachers, magicians, comedians, intellectuals, journalists' and 'even royalty'. Allen also described the dinners as 'well served': 'I say well served – often it's by some professional houseman and just as often by several young women' who he said reminded him of 'Castle Dracula where Lugosi has three young female vampires who service the place.' Other letter writers reportedly included billionaire media mogul Mortimer Zuckerman; Noam Chomsky and his wife, Joichi Ito; the former head of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab, physicist Lawrence M Krauss; and Harvard biologist and mathematician Martin Nowak. Allen, Ito, Zuckerman and Nowak did not respond to requests for comment from the Times. Barak reportedly declined to comment, and Chomsky's wife responded on his behalf, also declining to comment. Krauss reportedly told the Times that he didn't recall the letter but did attend 'several lunches with very interesting discussions' with scientists, authors and others at Epstein's house. In addition to the letters, the Times also published photos from inside Epstein's seven-story Manhattan mansion. In his office, the images show a taxidermied tiger and reportedly show a green first edition copy of Lolita – the controversial 1955 novel about a middle-aged man's sexual obsession with and sexual abuse and rape of a 12-year-old girl – which the Times said was 'showcased'. Surveillance cameras can be seen in Epstein's bedroom and an adjoining room. In his 'massage room', where many underaged victims said that they were sexually assaulted by Epstein, the Times reports that there were paintings of naked women, shelves of lubricant, and a large silver ball and chain. Elsewhere in the house, dozens of framed photographs show Epstein pictured alongside longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking. They also pictured Epstein with notable figures such as Pope John Paul II, Mick Jagger, Elon Musk, Fidel Castro, Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Richard Branson, Saudi Arabia crown prince Mohammed bin Salman and former Trump White House adviser, Steve Bannon. One frame also displayed a dollar bill signed by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates with the message 'I was wrong!' which the Times said was 'possibly as payment of a bet'. The Times also reported thatthe home's entryway featured framed prosthetic eyeballs, and that a suspended sculpture of a woman wearing a bridal gown and clutching a rope hung in the central atrium. According to the Times, a map of Israel drawn on a chalkboard that had the signature of former Israeli prime minister Barak was also in the home. Epstein died in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges. His death was ruled a suicide. The renewed scrutiny into Epstein's case comes as Trump and members of his administration had repeatedly vowed to release information related to the Epstein investigations. But in July, the administration reversed course, and the justice department announced it would not release any further documents or details regarding the case, prompting bipartisan outrage, including from Trump supporters and conservative media figures. Epstein's case has long been the subject of countless conspiracy theories, in part due to his ties to powerful people. His 2019 suicide has also fueled conspiracy theories for years. The justice department's recent announcement also reignited scrutiny of Trump's years-long friendship with Epstein. In July, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump allegedly wrote Epstein a birthday card as part of a 50th birthday album organized by Maxwell in 2003. According to the report, Trump's letter featured a sketch of a naked woman with Trump's signature. Trump denied the Journal's report and sued the newspaper for libel. Around a week layer, the Journal reported that justice department officials had informed Trump earlier this year that his name appeared in the Epstein files. The paper noted that being mentioned in the records isn't a sign of wrongdoing. Trump's spokesperson denied the report, calling it 'fake news'. Facing growing pressure, the justice department sent Todd Blanche, the deputy attorney general and one of Trump's former lawyers, to meet with Maxwell in late July to see whether she had 'information about anyone who has committed crimes against victims'. The meeting, which lasted two days, was held behind closed doors. On Friday, Maxwell was transferred from a Florida prison to a lower-security facility in Texas.

Machine Gun Kelly shocks fans with spot-on impression of a major star, can you guess who?
Machine Gun Kelly has shocked fans with his spot-on Jim Carrey impression. The 35-year-old music artist was a guest on The Tonight Show on Monday night, where he revealed his shocking ability to emulate the 63-year-old actor. MGK, whose real name is Colson Baker, was prompted to do his best Carrey impression after host Jimmy Fallon pulled up a tweet he posted on August 2 that read: 'Growing up, Jim Carrey was dad. There's no other explanation for my rubbery face.' He then offered to show the audience exactly what he meant as he said, 'I can do two Jim Carreys if you want.' First, the Cliché hitmaker remarkably mimicked Carrey in his popular film How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The rapper-turned-rocker also shocked viewers as he pulled his best Ace Ventura: Pet Detective expression. View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Tonight Show (@fallontonight) Not only did he manipulate his face to reflect the famous actor's, but he also recited a lengthy line from the movie script without stuttering or missing a beat. It comes after MGK was spotted out in the Big Apple with his 16-year-old daughter Casie. The musician, who is promoting his new album Lost Americana, was stylishly dressed in olive green cargo pants, a clinging baby blue sweater, and white sneakers. While appearing on the Today show's video series 8 Before 8 in July, he revealed that he picked his younger daughter's name. 'Well, I lost the first one and won the second one,' he answered when asked, 'As a father of two girls, what was the name choosing process like?' He elaborated, 'When you are 18-years-old and you go to her mother and you go, "What if we named our kid Kid?" I get why she's like, "Hey man, shut up."' He confessed with a laugh, 'That was one of the names. I was like, "If her name was Kid, that would be sick."' The Cliché hitmaker remarkably mimicked Carrey in his popular film How the Grinch Stole Christmas And while on Today in June he explained the meaning behind his newborn's name. 'She is an epic story. That's what saga means,' he said of the moniker. Referencing his ex Megan's prior miscarriage, He added, 'Her journey, the five years of her culmination of coming, disappearing, coming back again, disappearing, coming back again.' He also connected the name to his Norwegian background, stating, 'That's the Nordic goddess of storytelling. So, she has a storytelling future ahead of her.' Fans previously mistakenly thought the exes had named their daughter 'Celestial Seed' due to the caption MGK used when announcing her birth. Selena Gomez, 33, posts a rare photo with her mini-me sister Gracie, 11
Selena Gomez shared a rare photo of herself and her little sister in a sweet social media post on Monday. The multi-hyphenate, 33, who shared some of the details of her upcoming wedding with her fans on TikTok, posted the picture in an upload called 'good times, good food, good people.' In the sweet snap, the Only Murders in the Building star is snuggled up to young Gracie Teefey, 11, on the patio of a restaurant near the ocean. Gracie is the daughter of Gomez's mom Mandy Teefey and stepfather Brian Teefey. The Ice Cream singer showcased the warm tones in her complexion, wearing a brown sweater. Her dark hair was styled straight and she wore natural looking makeup with red lipstick. Gracie looked cozy in a large charcoal sweatshirt. She resembled her big sister when she was a star on the hit Disney show Wizards of Waverly Place. The tween showcased her ability to use chopsticks, holding a pair in her hand. They appeared to be at Nobu Malibu. Both sisters had a velour blanket on their laps to stay warm in the cool sea air. Another snap in the carousel include Gomez and her fiancé Benny Blanco, 37, enjoying a seafood meal at another oceanside restaurant. Gomez wore a brown sweatshirt, while the music producer added a pop of color, wearing a floral hoodie with an orange background and pink and blue flowers. The couple got engaged in December 2024 and are rumored to be tying the knot in September. During an appearance on Jake Shane's Therapuss podcast in July, Blanco, born Benjamin Joseph Levin, seemed to negate those rumors, saying their busy schedules have kept them doing much planning for the nuptials. 'That's why we both need to chill,' he told the host. 'We've both been working so much. Giving a lengthy explanation about their busy lives, he said, 'We got engaged, and then we were filming music videos for our album [I Said I Love You First]... Then it's holidays, then right after the holidays, we had to start all the promo for our stuff, do that.' 'Then she left to film her show Only Murders [in the Building] and then I met her, then we hung out for a week, and then right after that, it's promo.' Gracie, who is 22 years younger than Gomez, looks very much like her big sis when she was a star on the hit Disney show Wizards of Waverly Place Another photo showed Gomez looking mysterious as she gazed into a mirror 'And then I'm writing another book, so then I had to write a book, and then she came back for one day here. 'And then it was my birthday, and you know.... We're both working on so many things that we hadn't even had time to get into it, but we're so excited. 'I think this summer we're going to sit down and be like, "Okay, what are we doing, hun?"' Gomez also shared a couple of selfies, including one showing her goofy side, wearing red framed glasses, while in full hair and makeup. The other showed Gomez looking mysterious as she gazed into a mirror. The Rare Beauty founder may have time to begin planning her wedding as her schedule may loosen up a bit after season five on Only Murders in the Building debuts September 9.
