Man mistaken for ex-DBS boss Piyush Gupta in viral LinkedIn post says he clarified who he was from the beginning
SINGAPORE: A woman made the news this week for writing a long post on LinkedIn about her delightful 'chance encounter' with former DBS chief Piyush Gupta, only for him to show up in the comments section to say that the man Janney Hujic had met with had not, in actuality, been him.
Now, it has emerged that the man whom Ms Hujic had spoken to and whose picture she had posted had told her who he was, which would imply that she was aware he was not Mr Gupta when she posted it.
The man in the photo, a 58-year-old named Kumar H Subramaniam, commented on a Facebook post from Wake Up Singapore to set the record straight, especially after commenters had called him out for not having identified himself to Ms Hujic.
He wrote that he had been having lunch at a cafe in Bali, where he lives, when a man, who was also having a meal there with his partner, asked him if he was Mr Gupta. Mr Subramaniam said no and added that he has been mistaken for the former DBS head in the past.
Ms Hujic then asked to take a photo with him, to which he agreed.
' She and her guy mentioned that they had worked at DBS before, and we joked about her pranking her friends that she had bumped into Mr Gupta by chance in public while on their holiday here,' he wrote, adding that he had 'never, at any point,' said 'that he was indeed Mr Gupta.'
Moreover, he had also never agreed to have his photo used to promote any business or social venture, and he does not condone using a resemblance to Mr Gupta to mislead anyone, most importantly, the former DBS chief himself.

SINGAPORE: Minutes before Inspector Imran Mohd Hajar's flight back to Singapore was due to take off, he noticed a man behaving suspiciously just a row behind him. "He was walking around looking for something, which is unusual for me, especially when we are about to take-off five minutes to 10 minutes before," the deputy team leader of the Jurong East Neighbourhood Police Centre, Clementi Division told reporters on Wednesday (Jun 4). The 47-year-old police officer was returning home after a four-day trip to Kuala Lumpur with his wife and daughter. The man rummaged through a sling bag in the overhead compartment for about one to two minutes before allegedly taking some items from it. He then transferred them into an airline bag, the police officer said. "At that point in time, we could not confirm that the bag belonged to him, but we continued to observe till we landed in Singapore," he added. But upon landing, the sling bag was retrieved by a female passenger instead, who got off the plane before INSP Imran. The man was no longer on the plane. The police officer later spotted the man, who was with an acquaintance, at a smoking area at the transit lounge. He noticed the airline bag from earlier being passed between the two men. "That's where my policing instincts said that something is wrong somewhere," INSP Imran said, adding that he took a photo of the two men. Asked why he did not confront the men then, the police officer said he wanted to first make sure that items were missing from the sling bag. He also pointed out that the man he saw on the flight was a foreigner and did not want to abruptly question him. "(I gave him) the benefit of the doubt." TWO CHINESE NATIONALS ARRESTED INSP Imran's next step was to find the owner of the bag. He searched "high and low" for her and went to the baggage conveyor belt for the flight, in hopes that she had luggage to pick up. His guess turned out to be right and he approached the woman to verify if any of her items were missing. The woman realised that some cash and two bank cards were gone. INSP Imran said he believed the victim was a Malaysian and had just started working in Singapore. "She was traumatised, and subsequently, my wife managed to calm her down and told her 'don't worry, we will assist you in whatever we can'," he said. The couple brought the woman to an Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer, who referred them to a duty officer. INSP Imran shared the photos he had taken of the two men, and the Airport Police Division was roped in to search for the suspects. Two Chinese nationals, aged 35 and 40, were arrested on Monday after the police were alerted to the incident at about 8.50pm. Preliminary investigations found that the 35-year-old man had allegedly removed some items after rummaging through the contents of the victim's bag. Using information provided by INSP Imran, his wife and closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, officers from the Airport Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him at a lounge in the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 1. The 40-year-old man, who is believed to be his accomplice, was also arrested. Cash amounting to S$169 was recovered from him, the police said. Two debit cards belonging to the female passenger were discarded in a rubbish bin in an area where the two men had travelled through before their arrest. They will be charged on Wednesday with theft. If convicted, the men may be jailed for up to three years, fined, or both. Commander of Airport Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police M Malathi, said the two observant passengers - INSP Imran and his wife - played a "crucial role" in helping the police and the victim. "Their prompt reporting and detailed testimonies aided in the swift arrest of the suspects and substantiation of the crime, which is inherently challenging due to the transient and time-sensitive nature of air travel," she added. Recounting his actions during the incident, INSP Imran said: "It's just an instinct that we have (as) police officers for many years, and also the training that we received through our policing service." The police officer also said that he tells his children to stay vigilant and be aware of their surroundings during flights and on public transport.

Woman left injured after confronting brother over 7-figure inheritance left only to sons

The woman is one of eight children. She has three older sisters, an older brother, two younger brothers, and one younger sister. Her oldest sister and youngest brother have passed, with her having five living siblings. The woman, Mdm Zhuo Jinfeng, told Shin Min Daily News that her father passed away at the age of 90 three years ago, but his will tore the family apart, as he had left his entire seven-figure fortune to his two living sons. Unhappy with this, Mdm Zhuo confronted her brother on May 31, but the argument soon turned into an altercation. She told the Chinese daily: 'I think the money should be distributed equally. After all, we helped our family run the business when we were young. I went to him to ask for money, but his wife took out a hammer and even wanted to spray insecticide on me. I used an umbrella to defend myself. 'Then my brother pushed me, causing me to roll down the stairs. My hands and feet were bruised, and my head was swollen.' She said that she called the police. Mdm Zhuo's father started out selling eggs before he expanded his business and established a neighbourhood grocery shop. The siblings grew up helping out with their father's businesses. Mdm Zhuo told Shin Min , 'I started helping my parents raise chickens and ducks, sell eggs and mixed rice when I was five or six years old. I didn't have the opportunity to go to school and was living like that until my 20s. I didn't even have CPF for many years, and now I can't get a single cent. It's really heartbreaking.' Mdm Zhuo's brother, however, claims that she had fallen on her own during the fateful May 31 confrontation and that no one had pushed her. Her brother told Shin Min Daily News that he has surveillance footage capturing the incident. Hougang resident calls the police after his asthma gets triggered by burning joss paper
Stomp FB screencapture SINGAPORE: A resident from Block 541 Hougang Avenue 8 felt forced to involve the police after a joss paper burning at the carpark left his family with wheezing and coughing. Speaking to Stomp under the condition of anonymity, the resident said that the joss paper burned around 9:45 a.m. on Saturday (May 31), and the burning resulted in excessive smoke. He told Stomp , 'It's a fire hazard to vehicles parking nearby. Two owners shifted their cars. If the car doesn't catch fire, the ashes still get into cars and homes on the second floor.' Sharing that his family suffers from sinusitis and asthma, the resident added, 'The smoke was so overwhelming that it entered the house. We had to close the windows. I had an asthma attack and could not breathe. I had to set up my nebuliser to stabilise myself. Two of my kids have bad sinus problems and coughed.' The resident shared that he has been living in the neighbourhood for twenty years, and residents typically burn joss papers in a designated bin that is located about 25 metres away in an open field. Asserting that he has no problem with the burning as long as it's far away from homes, the resident said he decided to call the police as he deemed the incident 'a selfish act. The cleaner has to do extra work to clean the area because of the mess caused.' He added, 'We live in a multicultural country where we should be more considerate to others.' Hougang Ave 8 is under the purview of Ang Mo Kio Town Council. A spokesman representing the town council told Stomp that they received feedback about the incident and completed cleaning works on the same day. The spokesman added that joss paper burning is allowed only at designated bins. He said that the town council has decided to display advisory notices on proper joss paper burning etiquette in lift car noticeboards, 'to prevent potential fire hazards' and 'to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.'
