Iowa legend among elite in updated CBS college football head coach rankings
The eldest and most-tenured king of college football, Kirk Ferentz has found a level of consistent success with the Iowa Hawkeyes that over 100 FBS programs would gladly trade for in a heartbeat.
While it may not be the most visually appealing or the most fun way to win games, all that matters is the Hawkeyes win games, and a lot of them, with Kirk Ferentz at the helm as the head coach.
His success has been maintained, built upon, and can be counted on in each college football season. The sort of reputation and ability to win games has earned Kirk Ferentz a spot at CBS Sports' No. 19 head coach in all of college football.
19. Iowa
Kirk Ferentz: Kirk Ferentz began coaching at Iowa long before we began ranking coaches here, but his position has typically been the same. He's always in the top 20, sometimes climbing near the top 10, depending on how things went the year before. He's earned respect for his overall body of work, even if some of our voters aren't exactly thrilled by the style of play Ferentz prefers in Iowa City. 2024 rank: 18 (-1), High: 9, Low: 34 - Tom Fornelli, CBS Sports
While at the helm for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Ferentz has amassed winning season after winning season. He has led Iowa to a winning record in 21 seasons since 1999, when he took over as the head coach. He has a career record of 204-124 with the Hawkeyes.
Iowa has made its way to 20 bowl games under the tutelage of Kirk Ferentz, while qualifying for a bowl game every year dating back to 2013.
So, while it isn't always sexy or high flying, it is undeniably winning. When Iowa is back in the coaching search world, the realization of what he truly meant to this program may only hit the fan base then. Kirk Ferentz wins games, simple as that.

Sooners freshman catcher Corri Hicks enters the transfer portal
Sooners freshman catcher Corri Hicks enters the transfer portal The Oklahoma Sooners are in offseason mode after being eliminated from the 2025 Women's College World Series in their 3-2 loss to Texas Tech. The Sooners will regroup and retool to make another run in 2026, but they've already experienced their first transfer portal loss. True freshman catcher Corri Hicks entered the transfer portal on Tuesday evening. Hicks was considered the No. 12 player in the 2024 recruiting class and the No. 2 catcher. She played a limited role for the Sooners in 2025 but made an impact off the bench. In her lone season with the Sooners, Hicks hit .261 with three home runs, eight RBIs, five walks, and had an on-base+slugging percentage of 1.045. She went 2-for-4 in the NCAA Tournament with a home run against Boston and a base hit against Cal. Texas A&M will host the No. 1-ranked 2026 prospect in Iowa this week
Texas A&M's 2026 recruiting class is expected to continue growing this summer, heading into the 2025 season. As we've already witnessed under head coach Mike Elko, recruiting the entire country has not been an issue, with the team dominating the East and West Coasts, similar to former head coach Jimbo Fisher. This month, Texas A&M will host a wide range of elite 2026 prospects, which now includes four-star tight end Evan Jacobson out of Waukee, Iowa. Standing at 6'7" and 200 pounds, Jacobson is already an elite red zone target who thrives in the seam, possessing enough speed and twitch to outmaneuver smaller defenders. Playing in a run-heavy offense, which is very common in Iowa, Jacobson has been Waukee's most reliable receiving target throughout his starting career, thriving in the short game. At the same time, his size advantage has made him a sneaky deep threat. Like many tight end prospects, Jacobson will improve as a route runner once he enters a collegiate program. In Texas A&M OC Collin Klein's tight end-centric scheme, he could turn into one of the better SEC tight ends going into his second or third season. According to the man himself, Jacobson will head to College Station on Thursday, June 5, and spend the weekend with the Aggies for his first official visit. According to 247Sports, Evan Jacobson is currently positioned as the 175th-ranked prospect in the class, the 11th-ranked tight end, and the No. 1-ranked prospect in Iowa. Steelers TE Donald Parham suffers season-ending injury at OTAs
Steelers TE Donald Parham suffers season-ending injury at OTAs The Pittsburgh Steelers added tight end Donald Parham to help bolster the passing game but his season ended before it began when he suffered a torn Achilles at OTA practice. This could be why it was previously reported that the Steelers have renewed their interest in trading for Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith. Parham is a well-traveled player. He started his NFL career in Detroit in 2019 as an undrafted free agent. Parham bounced around between several teams that year before settling in with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020. He spent four seasons in Los Angeles and had 67 receptions in 47 career games. 23 of those games were starts. With Parham out for the year, the Steelers are back to square one for depth at tight end. Pat Freiermuth will serve as the team's No. 1 tight end and primary target in the passing game with Darnell Washington as the primary backup and Connor Heyward rounding things out. With Parham lost for the year, another pass-catching tight end becomes a significant need so don't expect the talk about Smith to go away, no matter who the Steelers might bring in at wide receiver.
