Verizon announces a $5B commitment to support small businesses

Axios20-05-2025
Small businesses fuel the U.S. economy — and a new investment aims to supercharge their role in it.
Verizon just announced a commitment to invest $5 billion over the next five years in U.S. small business suppliers with the launch of its new Small Business Supplier Accelerator.
What you need to know: The program helps create a pipeline for American small businesses, many of which are owned by veterans, to work with Verizon and other large corporations.
The strategy: This program is designed to strengthen small businesses — the backbone of the U.S. economy — and to help the country create a more resilient supply chain.
The Verizon Small Business Supplier Accelerator builds on the comprehensive support that Verizon has provided to small businesses and the communities they serve for years.
On top of the $5 billion in supplier spend, the program aims to empower American small businesses to work with Verizon and other large corporations through targeted training and flexible solutions such as:
Faster payment terms.
Modified insurance requirements.
Adjusted indemnification requirements.
The goal: To make it easier for small businesses to join Verizon's supplier network or the network of other large companies.
"Verizon recognizes that small businesses are the backbone of the American economy and a staple in our local communities," said Hans Vestberg, CEO, Verizon. "Our long-standing commitment and investment in small businesses aims to empower local businesses and communities with financial, technology and business expertise and resources to advance economic growth and foster job creation."
Helping over 460,000 small businesses succeed
Verizon is further fueling small businesses through its Small Business Digital Ready program, a free online program offering small businesses nationwide the opportunity to access:
Over 50 expert on-demand courses curated by and for small businesses.
1:1 expert coaching.
Online and in-person networking opportunities.
Curated loans and grants.
In partnership with the nonprofit LISC, Verizon recently announced another Small Business Digital Ready grant opportunity where eligible small businesses who are Digital Ready members (and complete two resources) can apply for $10,000 grants (open until June 30, 2025, at 11:59 pm PT).
Since 2021, Verizon has awarded $13.5 million in grants to support small businesses.
Verizon has supported nearly half a million small businesses through Small Business Digital Ready since 2021, almost halfway to the company's goal to equip one million small businesses with the skills and resources they need to thrive in the digital economy by 2030.
The takeaway: Verizon offers a comprehensive commitment to small businesses that extends beyond a financial investment, aiming to equip these vital economic drivers with the tools and resources small businesses need to grow and protect their businesses using technology.

MLB, ESPN reportedly reach agreement for network to obtain rights to sell out-of-market games, ability to offer MLB.TV

ESPN and MLB are reportedly close to an agreement that would allow the network to carry and the rights to all out-of-market baseball games — and select in-market baseball games — according to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic. The reported deal, which has not been signed yet, would give ESPN the ability to offer to fans as part of the network's newly-launched direct-to-consumer streaming service. ESPN officially announced that service Thursday. It's unclear exactly if — or how — the agreement will change how fans currently access per Marchand. But the network could require fans to have an ESPN direct-to-consumer subscription to get access to From The Athletic: It is not fully clear yet if out-of-market subscribers who pay for the package through cable or other linear subscription would still be able to receive that way. For digital consumers, fans are likely to need an ESPN direct-to-consumer subscription to go along with The overall new pricing for is not yet decided. In addition to that, ESPN would also obtain the rights to every out-of-network MLB game. That's essentially what already provides to customers, as the service offers out-of-network games to fans. But it would also presumably allow ESPN to sell rights for certain out-of-network games to other networks or subscription services. Events such as the Home Run Derby or "Sunday Night Baseball" could be sold to other networks by ESPN, which has previously held broadcast rights for those events. The network could also presumably sell any random out-of-market game to, as an example, Apple TV+. It's unclear if that's what the network has in mind if the deal goes through. ESPN is still expected to broadcast roughly 30 regular-season games per year, according to Marchand. Those games would presumably be available on the network, and not exclusive to its direct-to-consumer offering. As part of the deal, ESPN will also control in-network games for five MLB teams: the Cleveland Guardians, San Diego Padres, Minnesota Twins, Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies. Local fans who want to watch those teams would likely have to go through ESPN's direct-to-consumer service. In addition to owning a subscription to that service — which costs $29.99 per month — the network could charge in-network consumers an additional fee to watch their favorite team's games. The reported agreement comes after a months-long feud between MLB commissioner Rob Manfred and ESPN. In February, ESPN decided to opt out of its partnership with the league following the 2025 MLB season. Manfred ripped the network a month later, saying he felt the league was "being treated disrespectfully" by ESPN. It appears those issues are now water under the bridge if Thursday's reported agreement comes to pass. Should the agreement go through, it would reportedly last for three years, per Marchand. MLB reportedly wants all of its broadcast rights to expire in 2029, allowing it to make a massive payday by auctioning off those rights to the highest bidder or bidders.

Walmart reports solid second-quarter sales and profits despite a challenging tariff environment

NEW YORK -- Walmart Inc. reported increases in second-quarter profits and sales Thursday as it continues to pull in price-sensitive shoppers for everyday essentials like groceries despite a challenging tariff environment. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based company, the nation's largest retailer, also increased its annual profit and sales outlook. It's among the first group of major U.S. retailers this week to report quarterly results that should shed more light on how consumers are coping with rising prices because of higher tariff costs. The company said Thursday that it earned $7.03 billion, or 88 cents per share, for the three-month period ended July 31. That compares with $4.50 billion, or 56 cents per share, a year ago. Sales rose nearly 5% to $177.40 billion. A growing list of companies including Procter & Gamble, Cosmetics, Black & Decker and Ralph Lauren have told investors in recent weeks that they plan to or have already raised prices because of tariffs, though modestly. None of that has derailed consumer spending. Shoppers spent at a healthy pace in July, particularly at the nation's auto dealerships, even as President Donald Trump's tariffs start to take a toll on jobs. However, some of that spending could have been shoppers buying furniture and other items to get ahead of the expected price increases, analysts said. On Tuesday, Home Depot, the nation's largest home improvement retailer, reported improved sales during its latest quarter as consumers remained focused on smaller projects amid cost concerns and economic uncertainty. But its performance missed Wall Street's expectations. The Atlanta-based company also said shoppers should expect modest price increases in some categories as a result of rising tariff costs, though they won't be broad-based. Target, which has been struggling to reverse a persistent sales malaise, announced a new CEO to take over in February. It reported another decline in comparable sales and said would only raise prices as a last resort. Chief Commercial Officer Rick Gomez said shoppers are focusing on value and so the discounter is leaning more into its store label brands, which tend to be less expensive than its national labels. But it's Walmart that serves as a barometer of spending given its outsized power in the retailing landscape. Walmart maintains that 90% of American households rely on the retailer for a range of products, and more than 150 million customers shop on its website or in its stores every week. Walmart had said back in May that prices had started to increase in late April and got higher in May. But it said a bigger sting would start to be felt in June and July when the back-to-school shopping season went into high gear. Analysts were expecting 73 cents per share on sales of $175.93 billion for the quarter, according to FactSet. Per share results, excluding effects of charges related to certain legal matters and from business restructuring, was 68 cents. Walmart's U.S. comparable sales — those from established physical stores and online channels — rose 4.6% in the latest quarter, slightly higher than the 4.5% gain in the fiscal first quarter. The business was fueled by groceries and health and wellness items, the company said. Global e-commerce sales rose 25%, above the 22% growth in the fiscal first quarter. The company said Thursday it expects earnings per share to be in the range of 58 cents to 60 cents for the current quarter. Analysts expect 57 cents per share, according to Factset. Walmart also expects sales to be anywhere from 3.75% to 4.75% for the current period. For the year, Walmart is raising is per share estimates to a range of $2.52 to $2.62, up from the previous estimate of a $2.50 to $2.60 range. Analysts are expecting $2.62 per share, according to FactSet. Sales are anticipated to increase to 3.75% to 4.75% up from 3% to 4% growth it projected in May.
