Lewis Capaldi says ‘I'm back baby' as he makes emotional return to Glastonbury
The crowd started chanting 'Oh Lewis Capaldi' before he began playing the hit song Before You Go, to kick off his set, which had been listed as 'TBA' on the Glastonbury website.
The musician, who announced a break from touring shortly after his performance at the festival in 2023, has just released a new song called Survive.
He told fans: 'It's so good to be back. I'm not going to say much up here today, because if I do, I think I will probably start crying.
'But it's just amazing to be here with you all, and I can't thank you all enough for coming out and coming and seeing me.
'Second time's a charm on this one, everybody.
'It's just a short set today, but I just wanted to come and kind of finish what I couldn't finish the first time round.'
He performed a 35-minute set on the Pyramid Stage with songs including Hold Me While You Wait and Grace.
Introducing his new song, he became visibly emotional as he said: 'The last two years haven't been the best for me, it's been difficult at times.
'This has been my f****** goal, to get back here', he added.
He ended his performance with Somebody You Loved, the track that Glastonbury crowd's helped him to sing when he struggled with his Tourette symptoms in 2023.
The condition causes you to make sudden, repetitive sounds or movements and while there is no cure treatment can help manage the tics, according to the NHS website.
He said: 'I really missed doing this for the last two years, it's been difficult at times to like think that maybe this wouldn't ever happen again…
'I couldn't sing this song two years ago for a different reason. I think I might struggle this time for another reason, but this time it's a good reason.'
He added: 'My name's Lewis Capaldi and I'm f***** back baby.'
Earlier on Friday, alternative pop star Lorde surprised fans with a secret set at Worthy Farm, performing her latest album Virgin, which was released on Friday, in full.
Also performing was rising pop singer Lola Young who treated fans to her UK number one single Messy during her afternoon Woodsies set.
The 24-year-old singer, who was wearing a checked dress and black bralet, brought out a blow-up doll with her face on it as she sang her latest single Not Like That Anymore.
Addressing the crowd, Young, whose arrival on stage was delayed by 10 minutes, said: 'Thank you to everybody who made this happen, and thank you for being here.'
Scottish indie rockers Franz Ferdinand brought out former Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi during their Other Stage set while they were playing Take Me Out, one of their best known songs.
Capaldi sang along with the band after being introduced by lead singer Alex Kapranos as 'the original Capaldi'.
Elsewhere at the festival, British pop rock band The 1975 will be the first headliners to grace the Glastonbury Festival's Pyramid Stage this year when they perform on Friday.
Made up of four school friends, the group, known for songs including Chocolate, Someone Else and About You, comprises singer Matt Healy, bassist Ross MacDonald, guitarist Adam Hann and drummer George Daniel.
The five-day celebration of music and performing arts, which opened its gates on Wednesday, will also host headline performances from veteran rocker Neil Young and his band the Chrome Hearts, and US pop star Olivia Rodrigo.
The BBC confirmed on Thursday that Young's Saturday Pyramid Stage set will not be broadcast live 'at the artist's request'.
This year's line-up features a number of acts listed as TBA, as well as a mysterious act called Patchwork, which will take to the Pyramid Stage on Saturday.
Festivalgoers had a clear morning after significant rainfall overnight, with temperatures reaching the mid-20s, according to the Met Office.
The Met Office's Grahame Madge said: 'Heat and humidity will be building over the weekend. We anticipate highs of 26C on Saturday, with high levels of humidity. By Monday temperatures can be anticipated to be over 30C.
'There is always the chance of a light shower, but there is nothing in the forecast that suggests anything heavier for Saturday for Somerset.'
Avon and Somerset Police said there had been 38 crimes reported at the festival, and 14 arrests made.
On Saturday Irish rap trio Kneecap, who have had one of their members charged with a terror offence, will perform on the West Holts Stage at 4pm.
Before the festival, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said it would not be 'appropriate' for them to perform.
Liam Og O hAnnaidh, 27, was charged with allegedly displaying a flag in support of proscribed terrorist organisation Hezbollah at a gig in London in November last year.
Last week the rapper, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was cheered by hundreds of supporters as he arrived with bandmates Naoise O Caireallain and JJ O Dochartaigh at Westminster Magistrates' Court in Free Mo Chara T-shirts.
He was released on unconditional bail until the next hearing at the same court on August 20.

Performing in the coveted Sunday legends slot this year is Sir Rod Stewart, who previously said he will be joined by his former Faces band member Ronnie Wood, as well as other guests.
Sir Rod's performance will come after he postponed a string of concerts in the US, due to take place this month, while he recovered from flu.

Their headline slot at Glastonbury is set to be the band's only gig this year. The 1975 headlined Glastonbury last night, Friday June 27. But their performance appeared to massively divide the audience, many of whom took to social media to complain about frontman Matty Healy's 'insufferable' stage presence. Their slot at Glasto's Pyramid Stage is to be their only show of the year, and Matty Healy and his fellow band members "pulled out all the stops" to ensure their performance was unforgettable. Healy emerged onto the stage with a pint of Guinness – which he didn't appear to be drinking – in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Early into the set, the star appeared to make fun of his ex Taylor Swift, who allegedly wrote some of her most recent album The Tortured Poets Department about their brief relationship, reported Somerset Live. On stage he told fans: "What this moment is making me realise is that - yeah. This moment is making me realise. I probably am the best so I'm probably the best songwriter of my generation. A poet, ladies and gentlemen, is what I am. I wanted to remind you - this poetry, I believed in it for you." The band then started singing their hit, Chocolate – possibly the least poetic song in their catalogue – before he then said he was joking about being a poet. The headline set divided people on social media: 'Matty Healy swaggering about with a pint he's no intention of drinking is the most annoying thing I've ever seen,' said one. Another added: 'Matty Healy carrying a pint of Guinness around to appear relatable and has not drunk a single sip in 10 minutes.' A third said: 'Matty Healy trolls on stage at Glastonbury: 'I'm probably the best songwriter of my generation — the best, what do we say? A poet.' Another said: 'The thing which makes Matty Healy so insufferable is it's very easy to imagine that all the b*llendery he does on stage isn't just for the performance but that he would genuinely sashay into Gregg's reciting 14th century French poetry.' Another added: 'Matty Healy trying to play the archetypal rock & roller with the leather jacket, pint of Guinness and a cigarette while simultaneously performing some of the blandest music imaginable is quite the contradiction. About as rock & roll as Aled Jones.' But others were loving the set- even if they had issues with the frontman. One said: 'Say what you want about matty Healy but he is a SHOW MAN.' Another said: 'The 1975's music is really good, but Matty Healy really is an insufferable b*llend of a frontman!' Another added: 'I do understand why Matty Healy is a polarising character but I think The 1975 are a brilliant band with sharp songwriting, brilliant diversity in sound & excellent musicianship. Still my favourites!' A fourth said: 'Should have been all about the #1975 but Healy has decided to hijack it and turn in a car crash performance. You can see it in the bands faces. All he had to do was hold it together for one day and he's failed miserably.' A fifth said: 'The 1975 are actually pretty good! It's just a shame that Matty Healy is an absolute weapon.' It comes as a source told The Mirror there was much less of a crowd for the 1975, with Lewis Capaldi and CMAT attracting a bigger number of people to the Pyramid Stage. We take a look at memorable secret sets from past years: THE CHURNUPS 8 The Foo Fighters rocked the Pyramid Stage in 2023 as The Churnups Credit: PA By the time Dave Grohl and co took to the Pyramid Stage as The Churnups in 2023, the secret was well and truly out of the bag. But that didn't deter the American rock veterans, who headlined in 2017, from ripping through a concise nine song set packed with hits. Running out in front of a banner with the Foos' pseudonym on in a heavy metal font, Dave Grohl was all gas no brakes, headbanging and sprinting around like a man half his age. It was a poignant, uplifting return to the farm a year after the band's drummer, Taylor Hawkins, died while they were touring South America. THE KILLERS 8 The Killers played a hit-packed set in Woodsies in 2017 Credit: Getty Two years before they headlined the festival for a second time in 2019, The Killers flashed their Vegas-infused brilliance on the John Peel Stage. Led by showman Brandon Flowers, the band emerged at 5.30pm on the Sunday afternoon and launched into an anthemic When You Were Young. As news spread around the site, the crowd grew bigger with hundreds, if not thousands, of fans gathering outside the tent to hear the hits. It was a memorable moment and paved the way for a glorious return to the top of the bill in 2019 where they were joined by special guests Johnny Marr and Pet Shop Boys. Over 400 fans tried cramming into a tiny tent late at night to hear chilled hits like Salad Days. One lucky person that made it inside, wrote on Instagram: "Mac Demarco secret set in the tiniest tent was worth climbing the muddiest hill." PULP 8 Jarvis Cocker's Pulp performed on The Park Stage in 2011 Credit: Getty Britpop favourites Pulp are riding high once again following the release of critically acclaimed comeback album, More - their first in 24 years. But the magic never really faded, and those who witnessed their 2011 secret set can attest to that. Frontman Jarvis Cocker was in fine form and typically dapper for the Park Stage performance playing a mix of hits and deeper cuts. One fan said: "Wasn't much of a secret as everyone knew by the time Sunday rolled around. We got a spot mid-morning and managed to hold it down as the field filled up. It was an amazing set with people watching it all the way up the hill." As you can imagine, excitement was at fever pitch when Thom Yorke and co eventually appeared, with one gig-goer saying: "Outrageous, the wait the buzz." RICK ASTLEY AND BLOSSOMS 8 Rick Astley paid tribute to The Smiths, alongside Blossoms Credit: Rex Rick Astley and Blossoms were perhaps one of the most surprising combinations to grace Glasto, yet it really worked. The two acts' homage to Manchester's musical heroes The Smiths in 2023 sent fans nuts. Glastonbury 2025 - confirmed acts so far TICKETS to the 2025 festival sold out in just minutes before some of the acts were even confirmed. Here is who has been confirmed so far. Confirmed headliners: The 1975 will take to the Pyramid Stage on Friday. Neil Young will headline the festival for the second time after his last set in 2009 on Saturday after RAYE makes her return. Charli xcx will headline the Other Stage on Saturday night. On Sunday, Olivia Rodrigo is due to belt out her hits for her first appearance while Rod Stewart will perform in the legends slot. More acts to appear on the Other Stage include Loyle Carner and The Prodigy. Doechii will make her Glastonbury debut on the West Holts Stage on Saturday night. Other names confirmed include Noah Kahan, Alanis Morissette, Gracie Abrams, Busta Rhymes, Lola Young, Brandi Carlile, Myles Smith, En Vogue, Amaarae, Cymande, Shaboozey, Osees and Gary Numan. Meanwhile on Instagram, Brit singer Olivia Dean revealed she was back at the festival and would be performing at 3pm at the Strummerville area.
