Xabi Alonso talks tactics, Sebastian Hoeneß, and VfB Stuttagrt: 'It's going to be demanding'
During a press conference on Friday afternoon, Xabi Alonso spoke with Get German Football News about VfB Stuttgart, Sebastian Hoeneß, and the demands that a game against the Swabians brings.
Alonso's side travel to 8th place Stuttgart ahead of Sunday evening's game this weekend. They'll be looking for an immediate response to last matchday's 0-2 loss to Werder Bremen.
A disappointing defeat regardless, but the fact they failed to close the gap on Bayern, themselves losing last weekend, made it all the more disappointing.
Games between B04 and Stuttgart are always well anticipated by Bundesliga fans. In their last four meetings in all competitions, we've witnessed 13 goals and even a penalty shootout.
GGFN questioned Alonso on the threat VfB carries and how he plans on nullifying Stuttgart's attacking threat.
'I think we know each other very well, these are the games you always look forward to and enjoy watching.'
He continued: 'We know their qualities. They have good intensity and know when to trigger the press. They get good distance between players and can create space in order for their forwards to run into.'
The B04 coach then spoke about his Stuttgart counterpart, Sebastian Hoeneß, and what B04 must do in order to win.
'They have been a great time to watch for a while now under Sebastian Hoeneß. We will have to do many good things to stop them for sure. It will be demanding [for our players].'
Leverkusen are still without talisman Florian Wirtz, who is still recovering from an ankle injury, which will see him sidelined until early April.

German FA confirms Nick Woltemade will remain with senior team through Sunday
Bundesliga striking sensational Nick Woltemade will be remaining with Julian Nagelsmann's national team this weekend for the UEFA Nations League third-place playoff. This despite statements to the contrary by Nagelsmann himself. The VfB Stuttgart man – pulling double duty with the senior team and German U21s this summer – won't be reporting to Germany U21 head coach Antonio di Salvo's camp. Nagelsmann specifically stated that – after the defeat to Portugal in Wednesday's semi-final fixture – Woltemade would 'go straight to the U21s' . The German FA confirmed that this would not be the case one day later. Woltemade started in his first DFB-senior appearance on Wednesday and came close to scoring in the 19th minute. Advertisement Nagelsmann had positive things to say about the 23-year-old's hour-long-shift. Woltemade's initial cap for the seniors should be followed up by a second in Sunday's match. Clearly, the German FA wants one of Germany's most-watched talents to log more minutes at the highest level. Woltemade will now travel to di Salvo on Sunday evening,. 'He made good use of his first 60 minutes as a senior international,' Nagelsmann said of Woltemade on Wednesday night. 'I wasn't expecting miracles. A young player has a lot to deal with.' VfB Stuttgart join Bayer Leverkusen in the race for Manchester City's James McAtee
Sky Germany reports that VfB Stuttgart have added Manchester City's James McAtee to their shortlist, likely as a potential replacement for Enzo Millot. Stuttgart are monitoring several different profiles in the position, with McAtee being a new one added. This is likely due to the future of Enzo Millot being up in the air. The DFB-Pokal winner has been linked with a move away this summer for several months now, and despite a poor season, Millot showed his level in the Pokal final, where he scored twice against Arminia Bielefeld. Advertisement However, Stuttgart are not the only Bundesliga side interested. Eintracht Frankfurt are said to have made an enquiry, while Bayer Leverkusen are also interested. die Werkself have been linked with McAtee as a potential replacement for Florian Wirtz. The 22-year-old is said to be interested in the chance of playing in the Bundesliga. McAtee has mainly been a peripheral figure for City this season, playing 27 times in all competitions and scoring seven times. GGFN | Jack Meenan

Milan show interest in Bayer Leverkusen's Granit Xhaka
After causing a stir suggesting that a return to Basel was imminent, Granit Xhaka has since stated that he's happy at Bayer Leverkusen, where he has three-years remaining on his current contract. However, that hasn't stopped clubs showing an interest in the Swiss midfielder. According to Kicker, Milan have shown 'loose interest' as they prepare for a new era under Massimiliano Allegri as their new head coach and Igli Tare as sporting director. Speaking earlier in the week, Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes confirmed that the club are planning to go into the 2025/26 season with Xhaka, as they too embark on a new era after Erik ten Hag replaced Xabi Alonso as head coach. Advertisement But the fact that Leverkusen retain interest in Malick Thiaw could work in Milan's favour. Last season's second-placed Bundesliga side are scouring the market for a Jonathan Tah replacement and have identified the Milan defender as a candidate. Whether or not Xhaka could be used in a makeshift is, as of now, unfounded. GGFN | Daniel Pinder
