They are Gobinda and Sagar — both from Jadla village in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district, and Baljeet Singh and Gurmail Singh, both from Balliyewal in Ludhiana.
On July 29, 2020, the four were booked under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 149 (unlawful assembly) for killing Dara Singh.
According to the prosecution, Dara's younger brother Bahadur Singh told police tyhat they had gone to Baliawal village along with their nephew, Pawandeep, to attend a bhog ceremony of a relative on that day.
Two other relatives, Sagar and Gobinda, also came there with their two to three companions. As the family members were sitting on the rooftop of the house, an argument broke out between Gobinda, Sagar, and Dara.
When he and his brother tried to calm things down, Gobinda, Sagar, along with Gurmail Singh and Baljit Singh, joined in and started beating up his brother. They pushed Dara off the rooftop. Even after he fell to the ground, they continued punching and kicking him.

Gobinda held both of Dara arms while Sagar grabbed his neck and strangled him. When Bahadur tried to help his brother, two to three men who had come with the accused started hitting him with sticks, causing injuries on various parts of his body. Due to the beating, Dara fell unconscious. Seeing his condition, the attackers fled the scene.
Bahadur said he and his nephew, Pawandeep, quickly arranged a vehicle and took Dara to the civil hospital in Koom Kalan, where the doctor declared him dead.
Bahadur said Dara died due to the beating and strangulation by the named accused.
He said an old rivalry was the motive behind the attack A fight took place between the deceased and the accused four to five months earlier during a gambling session in Jadla village, he added.
The accused were booked and and subsequently arrested. After completing investigation, police presented a charge-sheet against the accused in court.

uring the trial of the case, the accused pleaded false implication. The prosecution examined a total of 16 witnesses. The court observed that after carefully reviewing all the evidence and the overall circumstances of the case, it was clear that the accused — Sagar, Gobinda, Gurmail Singh, and Baljit Singh— acted together with a shared intention and played an active and deliberate role in the murder of Dara Singh.
It held that the eyewitness accounts of Bahadur Singh and Pawandeep Singh (prosecution witnesses) clearly stated that the accused assaulted Dara Singh, threw him from the roof, and while Gobinda held his arms, Sagar strangled him.
The court observed that their statements were direct, credible, and strongly supported by the medical evidence given by Dr Gurinder Kaur (prosecution witness) and Dr Osho Blaggan (prosecution witness), both of whom confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxia due to strangulation caused by a neck injury — matching the prosecution's version of events.
The court held that further, the sequence of events, the nature of the injuries, and the lack of any reasonable explanation or defence from the accused strengthened the prosecution's case. "The accused have failed to present any convincing evidence of false implication or challenge the reliability of the prosecution's evidence. They have also not shown any history of enmity or conflict with the complainant or the police that could suggest a motive for false allegations," the court remarked.

Judge calls upon people to take responsibility to prevent human trafficking
Mysuru/ Hassan: Principal district and sessions judge Hemavathi called upon the people to take responsibility to prevent human trafficking. She also stressed that more care should be taken to ensure that human trafficking is not reported in Hassan district. The judge was speaking after inaugurating the Human Trafficking Prevention Day and awareness programme organised at Hasanamba Kalakshetra on Wednesday. She said the Constitution grants everyone the right to live as they wish, and thus better opportunities should be provided. It is everyone's responsibility to ensure that no child is deprived of education. "Children under the age of 18 should not be employed for any work. Upon reviewing various dimensions, it is observed that children are being misused for begging and immoral activities. Everyone should pay attention to their surroundings and join hands to prevent such activities," she advised. Deputy commissioner KS Latha Kumari emphasised that human trafficking is a severe social evil and should be taken seriously, with priority given to its prevention. Delivering the inaugural address at the World Day against Trafficking in Persons at the district police superintendent's office auditorium, he stressed the need for collaborative efforts between various departments and society to end this menace, which is detrimental to the development of society. Amarnath reflected on the changing nature of crime, stating, "Years ago, we read in newspapers about the arrest of five arecanut thieves or bicycle thefts. Later, we started seeing reports of national and international thefts. Now, we are reading about human trafficking. It is disheartening that a conscious civil society must observe a day to address this issue." "Trafficking of children can result in life imprisonment, yet innocent victims continue to be deceived and sold," he added. Amarnath assured that legal aid would be provided to victims from the district to the national level. "The District Legal Services Authority offers compensation to victims, and rescuing and rehabilitating those affected by trafficking is a key priority," he added. Additional superintendent of police C Mallik emphasised that human trafficking is the country's third-largest economic crime. He urged all departments to work together to prevent it.

'Don't elect Muslim immigrants': Islamophobic attacks follow NFL headquarters mass shooting after Muslim NYPD officer gets killed
The tragic shooting on Park Avenue has ignited a wave of political disinformation (Getty Images) A tragic mass shooting on Park Avenue in Manhattan has become the latest flashpoint for political disinformation, with far-right voices attempting to link the attack to Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani—despite no evidence connecting him to the crime. The incident, which claimed four lives including an NYPD officer, quickly turned into a digital battlefield fueled by Islamophobic rhetoric and political fearmongering. Right-wing figures falsely blame Mamdani despite lack of evidence In the chaotic aftermath of the shooting, conspiracy theorists and conservative commentators pounced. Far-right personality Laura Loomer accused Mamdani of inspiring 'a generation of pro-Islamic cop killers,' writing on X, 'This is why you don't elect Muslim immigrants to office.' Other voices resurfaced old statements from Mamdani about defunding the police—remarks he has since walked back—to question his legitimacy as a public servant. This narrative gained traction online before facts could surface, despite the real story being far different. One of the victims was Officer Didarul Islam, a Muslim Bangladeshi immigrant and father of two, who was working security when he was fatally shot. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch called him 'a hero,' saying, 'He made the ultimate sacrifice, shot in cold blood… He died as he lived: a hero.' Spike in snatching: 2025 records highest percentage rise in cases till April
1 2 Panchkula: Snatching cases have seen an alarming surge in 2025, with the city recording the highest percentage increase in such incidents compared to the same period over the past four years. According to available data from Jan 1 to April 30, 2025, a total of 27 cases were reported, which is nearly 50% of the total cases recorded in 2024. This sharp rise has raised serious concerns among both the public and law enforcement agencies. The year 2021 saw 29 snatching incidents, while 2022 witnessed a jump to 51 cases. The number increased to 61 in 2023, the highest annual tally so far. While there was a slight decline in 2024 with 54 cases, the first quarter of 2025 alone has nearly matched half of last year's total — indicating a possible year-end count that could surpass all previous records. What's more concerning is the number of cases solved. Only 7 out of 27 cases were cracked so far in 2025, resulting in a workout rate of just 25.9%, the lowest in five years. In comparison, the workout rate stood at 72.4% in 2021, 54.9% in 2022, and slightly improved to 62.3% in 2023. But it dropped to 44.4% in 2024 and has now plunged to below 26% in 2025. The police provided the data in a reply to an RTI application. The mid-year trajectory suggests that if the current pace continues, 2025 could become the worst year for snatching incidents in recent memory. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Premium 3 & 4 BHK ( 1079 - 1829 ) from ₹72.03 Lacs* at Jessore Road Srijan Realty Learn More Undo However, ACP (crime) Arvind Kamboj said, "At present, there is a dip in the number of chain snatching cases. After the recent arrest of two notorious snatchers, who were involved in a number of snatchings, there are no cases being reported, barring a few small incidents." The police said the number of cases and workout rate will be better as the year progresses. The police also claimed they have put up an increased number of nakas at different points of the city to stop snatching and to keep an eye on other miscreants. Snatchings Leave Trauma and Fear Behind It's not just the loss of valuables like purses or chains that victims suffer, but the lingering trauma and fear that stay with them long after the incident. The emotional scars often outlast the physical loss, leaving many hesitant to walk alone or feel safe in their own neighbourhoods. "Even one and a half years after my chain was snatched while I was walking with my friend in the evening in Sector 24, even today I always fear the same when I go out for a walk. Not only have I, but I have also made other friends not wear chains now. The chain was worth Rs 2.5 to Rs 3 lakh, but despite being caught on the CCTV camera, the miscreant could not be nabbed," lamented Sheela Malik (65), a resident of Sector 25. "We have been speaking to snatching victims. Some of them even get hurt or injured when this crime takes place. Many even stop going out for a walk in neighbourhood parks due to the fear," shared Mohit Gupta, founder, Solution Box. 'Law and Order Has Failed' Slamming the law and order situation, Hiteshi, general secretary of the Federation of Residents' Associations (FORA), Panchkula, rued, "Every time a new DCP takes over in Panchkula, it is claimed we will do this and that. But, when any crime takes place, they say we do not have enough police force. They just give lame excuses. Law and order is in very bad condition here and we do not feel safe. Patrolling is only in the name. " Year: Snatching: work out 2021: 29; 21 2022: 51; 28 2023: 61; 38 2024: 54; 24 2025 (Till April 30): 27; 7 EOM MSID:: 122936314 413 |
