WBJEE results likely soon: Board chief

Kolkata, Jul 30 (PTI) Decks have been cleared for the publication of West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEE) results following the Supreme Court's July 28 order staying the Calcutta High Court's earlier decision to halt the implementation of a revised list of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) notified by the state government, a senior higher education department official said on Wednesday.
'We in the higher education department had already anticipated this and are fully prepared to take appropriate actions immediately," state Education Minister Bratya Basu had said soon after the apex court's order.
Asked about the timeline for publication of the WBJEE results, board chairperson Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee remained cautious, though optimistic.
'Today (July 30), we received the state government directive. We shall implement the directive and let you know about our decision tomorrow (July 31)," she told PTI.
A senior education official told PTI that steps have been taken to publish the results soon.
'We have consulted legal experts, and every step has been taken to accommodate candidates' interests. The results will be out soon," he added.
Before the Supreme Court's directive, Banerjee had said, 'We were ready to publish the results by July 5. But then, the legal developments followed, and the matter became subjudice. We were waiting for the government's directive." The WBJEE exams were held on April 27.
On July 28, a bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria, while hearing the appeal of the state government, vacated the stay of the HC of the state's OBC policy and said 'prima facie, the high court order seems to be erroneous." On June 17, the Calcutta High Court ordered an interim stay on notifications issued by the state government with regard to reservations to 140 subsections under OBC-A and OBC-B categories made by it.
The Supreme Court bench took note of the submissions of senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the state government, and said, 'This is surprising. How can the high court pass such an order? Reservation is part of the executive function." The state had prepared the new list after the high court, in May 2024, quashed the inclusion of as many as 77 communities in the OBC list. PTI SUS MNB

US trade talks to stick to terms agreed earlier
India and the United States are intensely engaged to conclude a mutually beneficial early trade deal by the end of this month, 'strictly' within the bilaterally agreed framework of March 29, irrespective of the ongoing political rhetoric and independent of their strategic relationships with other countries, people in the know said on Sunday. he two countries finalised the detailed terms of reference (ToR) to enter into negotiations of the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) on March 29 during their first physical round of talks in New Delhi. But the agreed framework does not proscribe either nation from purchasing oil and gas from any third country of its choice, they said, requesting anonymity. The two countries finalised the detailed terms of reference (ToR) to enter into negotiations of the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) on March 29 during their first physical round of talks in New Delhi. Later, on April 22, US Vice President JD Vance officially announced the finalisation of the ToR for bilateral 'trade negotiations' during his India visit, and called it 'a vital step toward a final deal' between the two nations in a post on X that day. ToR is a set of bilaterally agreed road map for BTA negotiations. Both sides have concluded five physical rounds of negotiations and several virtual discussions within that framework. In the process, the two sides have already reached some common ground, substantial enough to announce an interim deal, they said. 'We are engaged through virtual mode as on date and likely to iron out remaining differences when the American negotiating team visits India for the sixth physical round this month,' one of the people cited above said. The US negotiating team is expected to land in New Delhi on August 24 to participate in the sixth round of talks from August 25. According to the people, some concrete outcomes are expected after the successful conclusion of the sixth round towards the end of August, despite US President Donald Trump's recent statements and tariff actions against India. Trump on July 30 announced punitive tariffs on Indian goods through a post on Truth Social. The announcements involved 25% on Indian goods shipped to America and an unspecified levy for purchasing Russian oil. Trump's reaction was an outcome of India refusing to budge on retaining protections for its agriculture, dairy and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sectors from unfettered American imports. Another factor behind Trump's reaction was India importing almost one-third of its crude oil requirements from Russia. About that, Trump on July 31 said on Truth Social: 'I don't care what India does with Russia… They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care.' According to the US Energy Information Administration's (EIA) country analysis updated on February 6, 2025, Russia was the primary source of India's crude oil and condensate imports in 2023, accounting for about 39% of its total imports, followed by Iraq (19%), Saudi Arabia (16%), United Arab Emirates (5%) and the US (4%). India imported 4.5 million barrels a day (b/d) of crude oil and condensate in 2023, it said. 'In 2022, after the United States and EU imposed sanctions on Russia, India began purchasing Russia's crude oil at a discount, increasing its imports more than sixfold to 740,000 b/d,' the report said. Energy hungry India, which is the world's third largest importer after the US and China, imports over 87% of the crude oil it processes. 'Economical and reliable energy supply is the top priority of India's energy security, and heavily discounted crude from Russia meets both the requirements. Our energy sourcing is diversified, involving 39 countries. We have recently increased energy imports from the US and this may go up further depending on commerciality. But our sourcing from Russia would not stop under any external pressure. We are not bound by any unilateral sanction as we follow the UN sanction,' a second person said. Energy security is India's key concern and the US is endowed with the natural resource. The proposed BTA may have some definite commitments for enhanced energy imports from the US, depending on the long-term commercial viability, the people mentioned above said. 'But the deal cannot and will not restrict India's freedom in pursuing its independent energy sourcing. We are buying crude oil from about 40 countries, including the US, the Middle East and Russia. And the policy of diversified sourcing will continue,' the first person said.

Guv visits disaster-affected areas in Mandi, calls for stronger disaster preparedness
1 2 Mandi: Himachal Pradesh governor Shiv Pratap Shukla visited the disaster-affected areas of Thunag, Bagsiad, and Janjehli in the Siraj assembly constituency of Mandi district on Sunday. During the visit, the governor met the affected families and distributed essential relief materials. The governor first interacted with disaster victims in Thunag and remarked that the sub-division suffered the most damage in the recent natural calamity, with extensive losses to private property, land, and livestock. He said cases amounting to over Rs 3 crore in compensation had been approved for final sanction. Commending the resilience of the local people, he said, "Despite the massive loss, the courage and determination of the residents here are truly commendable. While complete compensation for the damage is not possible, all possible assistance will be provided." The governor also met disaster-hit families in Janjehli and offered words of comfort. He said five truckloads of relief material had been dispatched to Mandi and one to Kullu from Raj Bhavan. He assured that more assistance would be sent promptly if requested by the district administration. Calling the calamity a major disaster, the governor said that immediate restoration is a challenge and there is a pressing need to take preventive measures to avoid such situations in the future. Referring to the Supreme Court's observations on environmental protection, he said they must be taken seriously and acted upon collectively. Leader of opposition Jai Ram Thakur, who also accompanied the governor, said the people are still in deep shock as their sources of livelihood were destroyed. He appreciated the state govt for restoring essential services like roads, electricity, and water supply through the district administration. Bihar MP's Wife A Voter In 2 Separate Constituencies: Report
New Delhi: A Left MP from Bihar who challenged the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in the Supreme Court has come under a cloud amid reports that his wife was registered as a voter in two separate Assembly constituencies with two distinct EPIC numbers, election office sources said on Sunday. Petitioner and Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation MP Sudama Prasad's wife, Shobha Devi, allegedly had two EPIC numbers – RGX3264140 and WVA0308544. While one of her EPIC numbers was registered in Arrah Assembly constituency with Lavarish Seva Kendra as the designated polling station, the other pertained to Agiaon constituency with Samudayik Bhavan Araila as her polling station, said sources in the Bihar election office. The fresh 'dual EPIC number' controversy comes close to the one involving Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav, who is also allegedly possessing 'dual' Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers. Earlier, the Supreme Court, while hearing a batch of pleas challenging the electoral roll revision ahead of the Assembly elections in November, posted the matter to August 12, assuring to intervene immediately if there is 'mass exclusion' of voters in the SIR. On Saturday, Tejashwi Yadav stirred a political storm in Patna with a claim that his name was missing in Bihar's draft electoral roll. ECI sources hinted that he might be possessing 'two' EPIC numbers, with only one of them being validated in the SIR. The election office on Sunday wrote to him seeking details of his 'second' EPIC number, which, according to him, had been deleted from the voter list. The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of Digha Assembly constituency asked the Leader of Opposition to present the original copy of the voter ID card whose number was alleged to be missing from the draft electoral roll. 'You are requested to kindly provide the details of the EPIC card (along with the original copy of the card) mentioned by you in the press conference held on August 2, 2025, to the undersigned, so that it can be thoroughly investigated,' wrote the ERO. The letter dated August 3 said the communication was linked to Tejashwi Yadav's 'statement given in the press conference held on August 2, 2025, regarding non-inclusion of names in the draft electoral list published on the basis of eligibility date July 1, 2025'.
