These 4 Chicago bars were just ranked some of the best in North America

Time Out30-04-2025

Raise your glass, Chicago: four local bars just landed on the 2025 North America 50 Best Bars list—and a fifth is already being hailed as the next big thing.
The newly announced ranking celebrates cocktail excellence across the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, with Chicago's Kumiko leading the city's showing at number 10 and earning the title of Best Bar in the Midwest USA, sponsored by Tia Maria.
But Kumiko isn't just a bar—it's a meditative escape in the West Loop. Created by Julia Momosé and the team behind Oriole, it's a place where welcome tea replaces party shots. The bar's serene, wood-accented omakase counter boasts just eight seats, where diners taste a progression of Japanese-influenced bites like seaweed-slicked uni, wagyu glazed in black garlic molasses and milk toast crowned with fermented honey ice cream, paired with imaginative sake and shochu cocktails. If mindfulness could be distilled and served in a glass, it might taste like Kumiko.
And then there's Lemon, which hasn't even cracked the top 50—yet. The cocktail spot was named the Campari One To Watch, an award given to a standout bar poised to make the list in the near future.
At the top of this year's ranking? Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico City, which held onto its number 1 spot for the second year in a row.

Osaka Expo 2025 is hosting a spectacular monthly fireworks showcase

Anyone who's been to a fireworks festival in Japan will know just how breathtaking it can be. With a variety of explosion patterns synchronised to music and displays that typically last around an hour, it's one of the most unforgettable experiences you can have in the country. If you haven't had the chance yet, don't worry. Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan is giving you an opportunity to check this quintessential Japanese experience off your list. So, try to time your Osaka Expo visit to coincide with the Japan Fireworks Expo, a monthly programme showcasing a fireworks festival from a different part of Japan. Each show lasts around five to ten minutes and spotlights a fireworks producer central to that festival. This means every display is completely one of a kind, created especially for that night, and tells a unique story rooted in history, tradition and local spirit. The organisers, the Japan Fireworks Project, hope the event will not only introduce the world to Japan's distinctive fireworks culture, but also help preserve this art form while highlighting the charm of some of the country's lesser-known regions. In April, the Japan Fireworks Expo featured the Ise Shrine Dedication National Fireworks Festival from Mie prefecture, and last month, it was Futaba Fireworks from Fukushima, a prefecture in the Tohoku region that is still recovering from the devastating 2011 earthquake. The latter, held on May 31, drew a record-breaking crowd of 180,000 spectators, who gathered to witness an awe-inspiring display of hope and resilience by Itoi Fireworks, a 150-year-old company central to the Futaba Fireworks tradition. This month's fireworks display is set for Saturday June 28, when the spotlight will be on the Omagari Fireworks Festival from Akita Prefecture. This will be a real treat, as Omagari is considered one of the three most prestigious competitive fireworks festivals in Japan. After that, the Japan Fireworks Expo continues on July 21, July 23 (a special 20–30-minute show), August 23, September 27 and October 8. For more information, visit the Japan Fireworks Expo website. Japan's music community comes together to help those affected by the LA wildfires

On January 7 this year, several intense wildfires erupted near Los Angeles, tearing through the area and destroying or damaging more than 10,000 structures. Lives, livelihoods and entire communities were lost, with tens of thousands of residents forced to evacuate. Among the displaced were many musicians and artists, including hip hop producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist Madlib, who lost much of his recording equipment and record collection, and keyboardist and producer John Carroll Kirby, whose home was consumed by the flames. Five months later, both LA as a whole and the local music community are on the road to recovery, but reconstruction work is still ongoing in many parts of the city and a sizeable number of Angelenos who evacuated in January remain in temporary housing. One LA institution that's been working tirelessly to help the city back on its feet is the nonprofit internet radio station dublab, whose Tokyo branch is now providing fans of Japanese music with a groovy way to support those affected by the fires. All proceeds from the digital album A Charity Compilation in Aid of the 2025 LA Wildfires – Resilience –, set to be released by on June 7, will be donated to the fire victims via dublab in LA. Priced at ¥1,500, the eclectic compilation features music from the likes of genre-traversing electronic producer Foodman, Shibuya-kei icon Takako Minekawa, psychedelic rock band Suishou no Fune and singer-songwriter Yuga, all of whom draw inspiration from the LA scene in their contributions. With Tokyo and LA coming together over everything from baseball to doughnuts lately, the two cities' trans-Pacific bond looks stronger than perhaps ever before. The Resilience project looks set to deepen those ties even further – and we can pretty much guarantee there'll be some bangers among the album's 38 (!) tracks. See the full details for A Charity Compilation in Aid of the 2025 LA Wildfires – Resilience – on the website.
