First casualty of new regime as high profile departure set to be announced by Rangers as American owners begin rebuild

RANGERS technical director Nils Koppen has seemingly become the first casualty of the new American regime at Ibrox as reports suggest he is to leave the club.
The Belgian only assumed the role six months ago being promoted from director of recruitment, which left SunSport columnist Kris Boyd scratching his head at that move.

Koppen oversaw the club's transfer strategy and had overall responsibility for the men's academy, medical, football operations, performance and analysis departments.
During his tenure Rangers signed the likes of Hamza Igamane and Vaclav Cerny who have been seen as successes by most supporters.
Yet those additions failed to prevent Rangers finishing a huge 17 points behind rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
Fans were also less than impressed with players like Rafael Fernandes who struggled with injury.
The former PSV scout is to leave his post as technical director just days after the US Consortium took over the club.
Private healthcare tycoon Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises have bought a 51 per cent controlling stake at Rangers and have made £20 million available to begin the summer rebuild at Ibrox.
According to the Daily Record, Koppen's departure will be announced on Monday as Kevin Thelwell officially becomes the club's new sporting director.
Dan Purdy, who worked alongside Thelwell at Everton, is understood to be Koppen's replacement.
The news has been welcomed by fans on social media.
One fan said: "Good start by the new owners, clearing out folk not good enough."
Rangers fans react as 49ers takeover completed
Another added: "Good start to the 49ers era.
"Could have survived here in a lesser position but the promotion to technical director mid-season was nearly as bad a decision as Clement's new contract."
A third commented: "He was not qualified to do the job he had at Rangers in the first place, let alone the promotion he later received.
"Another shambles by the club."
A fourth added: "New regime off to a flyer."
Meanwhile, Ridvan Yilmaz could be set for return to Turkey with Besiktas understood to be in talks.
Robin Propper is another player likely to leave Ibrox this summer - the Dutchman tipped for a return to FC Twente.

Ryan Mason set for first permanent managerial role after agreeing West Brom move

West Brom have been on the hunt for a new manager since Tony Mowbray was dismissed on April 21. Mason quickly emerged as a leading candidate, but Spurs' roller-coaster 2024-25 campaign – in which they secured Europa League success – only ended on May 25. After a short holiday, the former England midfielder was given time to deliberate and has now decided to accept West Brom's offer. It brings a seven-year coaching career at Tottenham to an end for Mason, who progressed through the club's academy to also play 70 times for his boyhood team. A post shared by Ryan Mason (@ryan8mason) A decade on from earning his solitary England cap against Italy, the London-born coach will embark on his first managerial role in the Championship. Highly-rated coach Mason held talks with Belgian club Anderlecht in October before a mutual decision was made to remain at Spurs, which enabled the 33-year-old to play his part in the club's first trophy since 2008. After two previous caretaker stints at Tottenham, including leading the club into the 2021 Carabao Cup final, Mason has long been tipped for a future in management. Mason initially started coaching at youth level for Spurs upon his retirement in 2018 before being promoted to Antonio Conte's coaching staff three years later not long after a seven-game spell as interim boss. Another caretaker role came in 2023 following Conte's departure before Ange Postecoglou kept Mason as part of his backroom team. After a further two years as Tottenham first-team coach, Mason will take over West Brom after they finished ninth in the Championship. Mowbray was dismissed in April after their play-off hopes ended despite only being hired in January to replace Carlos Corberan, who left to take over at Valencia. Mason, whose contract at Spurs was up this month, will be tasked with leading West Brom back into the top flight for the first time since 2021.

Rangers chief Kevin Thelwell says head coach appointment due in ‘coming days'

Thelwell has officially started his role but had already been working on finding a new man to lead the first team after Barry Ferguson's spell in interim charge ended at the close of the season. Outgoing Real Madrid assistant manager Davide Ancelotti remains the favourite with former Swansea and Southampton boss Russell Martin also heavily linked. Steven Gerrard reportedly dropped out of the race. Thelwell is looking to remove further uncertainty over the club's future after a takeover by an American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises was confirmed on Friday. The 51-year-old, who has left a similar role with Everton, said on the Rangers website: 'It's a great honour to be joining Rangers, particularly at such an exciting moment in the club's history. Kevin Thelwell has today begun his role as Sporting Director as the summer of change here at Rangers moves up a gear. Read More ⤵️ — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) June 2, 2025 'While there has been significant work going on in the background prior to my arrival, that naturally accelerates from today, and top of the priority list will be the appointment of a new Head Coach for our men's first-team. 'That search has been progressing well, and the club and I look forward to bringing that to a conclusion in the coming days.' Rangers confirmed that Thelwell had brought Dan Purdy with him from Everton to replace Nils Koppen as technical director. Koppen, who arrived from PSV Eindhoven in December 2023, initially as director of football recruitment, will work with Thelwell and Purdy to 'support a smooth handover'. Purdy spent 11 years at Everton working in scouting and analysis and most recently head of recruitment. Rangers stated Purdy would lead on recruitment and scouting across the men's, women's and academy programmes. Thelwell arrives after three years at Everton. He previously worked for the Football Association of Wales and was head of the youth academies of Preston, Derby and Wolves, the first two working under former Rangers midfielder Billy Davies. He moved to New York Red Bulls to become head of sport for two years before his switch to Everton. 'This is a new chapter for Rangers, and while we recognise success won't come easy, our goal is clear: we need to win,' he said. 'My focus is on delivering that, with discipline and ambition. We'll give everything to move this club forward as quickly and sustainably as we can.'
