Arson squad investigating after two vehicles torched in Côte Saint-Luc
Police responded to several 911 calls at around 1:25 a.m. and found an SUV on fire on Mapleridge Avenue and another car on fire in the parking lot of an apartment building near Caldwell Avenue.
'The Montreal fire department quickly arrived on the scene to extinguish the fires,' said SPVM spokesperson Caroline Chevrefils, adding that another nearby car sustained 'significant damage.'
'Certain elements at the scene suggest that the fire was of a criminal nature,' said Chevrefils.
The two vehicles were towed for analysis, and the SPVM's arson squad is investigating the fires.
There were no injuries or arrests.

Suspect in stabbing of Abbotsford shopkeeper charged

Charges have been laid against the man accused of stabbing an Abbotsford store owner Saturday morning. Timothy Richard Louis Rowley, 40, is now facing charges of assault with a weapon and aggravated assault in connection with the altercation that unfolded at a strip mall near Townline and Maclure roads. He remains in custody. The victim, who according to police was randomly stabbed by an unknown man who was attempting to steal from the store, remains in hospital. The Abbotsford Police Department initially said the shopkeeper suffered life-threatening injuries, but in an update Sunday said the individual is currently in stable condition. Polie said the suspect was on statutory release from a previous conviction at the time of the stabbing. Statutory release is required by law for incarcerated people after serving two-thirds of a fixed sentence, after which the offender serves the remainder of their sentence under supervision in the community. Online court records show a man with the same name has a lengthy criminal history of offences in several B.C. cities. He was most recently sentenced to five years, 11 months and 20 days in prison for aggravated assault and breaking and entering in September 2020 for an incident that happened in Maple Ridge in May of 2019. The records show Rowley is next scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

Man dead after shooting on PEI, RCMP investigating
RCMP on Prince Edward Island say they're investigating after an apparent shooting that took place on the west side of the Island on Friday. Mounties say in a Saturday news release that officers responded to a report of shots fired on Route 125 in Urbainville around 8 p.m. The release does not indicate whether anyone was shot, but says a vehicle involved in the incident appeared to have crashed into ditch and struck a telephone pole. They say a man who they believe to be the driver was pronounced dead at the scene and a 50-year-old woman from Summerside was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police determined the incident to be a targeted and isolated incident and there is no reason to believe there is a risk to public safety. The RCMP say the investigation is continuing with 'extensive police resources,' including RCMP Forensic Identification Services, RCMP police dogs, Summerside Police and Kensington Police Services.

Ontario man fined $3,700 for illegal hunting in provincial park

(File photo) A man from Pikwakanagan, Ont., has been fined and handed a hunting suspension after pleading guilty to illegally hunting moose and deer in Algonquin Provincial Park. Scott Nerlich was fined $3,700 and prohibited from hunting for two years after admitting to unlawfully harvesting wildlife during the closed season. The case was heard by Justice of the Peace Harley D'Août Gervais in Pembroke on April 14, 2025. Province stresses protection of wildlife The Ontario government emphasized its commitment to enforcing hunting regulations to conserve vulnerable species. 'The Ontario government is safeguarding moose and deer populations by ensuring hunters do not hunt in provincial parks during the closed season,' the ministry said in the bulletin. Conservation authorities indicated that this case serves as a reminder that hunting in provincial parks without proper authorization is prohibited. The same day, the ministry also released another court bulletin detailing another man being fined for letting his dogs loose in a protected wildlife area.
