Working together saves councils over £600,000
Joint working between two Surrey local authorities has lead to savings of £603,000, according to an independent report.
Since 2022 Guildford and Waverley borough councils have shared a chief executive and leadership team.
In September a shared planning team was launched.
The report also said future savings could be even greater, now the one-off costs of creating shared teams have been met.
Guildford leader Julia McShane said: "We are excited about the potential to build on these results to drive further savings.
"As we continue to work together, our priority is to ensure that the services we provide to residents remain efficient and of the highest quality."
Waverley's leader Paul Follows said: "Our joint working has allowed us to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and maintain the standards of our services.
"We are in a fantastic position to explore further opportunities for collaboration that will generate additional savings and benefits for both councils and the communities we serve."
The report also said there had been no fall in the performance of services by either council.
With the government planning to reorganise local government, possibly merging districts and boroughs into larger unitary authorities, Follows said Guildford and Waverley are in a good position.
He said: "Being able to demonstrate a strong and successful partnership will also enable Guildford and Waverley to make very powerful case for us to have the central role in any future unitary council covering our area."

Wells Fargo calls this e-commerce stock an 'under-the-radar' AI story
Investors should pick up shares of Shopify as the company continues to innovate in an increasingly AI-powered e-commerce industry, according to Wells Fargo. Analyst Andrew Bauch reiterated his overweight rating on Shopify shares and lifted his price target by $18 to $125, which suggests the stock has about 19% upside ahead. Bauch said Shopify has a strong product portfolio and strategic partnerships in artifical intelligence that will allow it to capture similar market share in "agentic" commerce as it does in traditional U.S. e-commerce. Agentic commerce refers to AI agents acting on behalf of the customer or business in e-commerce transactions such as managing inventory, giving customized recommendations and executing payments and other tasks. "While not typically perceived as an AI play, we believe Shopify's AI efforts are differentiated and can serve as another important growth & efficiency driver for years to come," Bauch wrote in a Friday note to clients, calling the stock an "under-the-radar AI story." "Overall, we see AI as an important piece to the Shopify story, and see the business as well-positioned to ride the wave, rather than getting knocked off course. We're taking our growth and margin estimates up modestly on alleviating tariff risks, and the multiple higher on AI confidence," he added. Shares of Shopify are up nearly 3% this year. The stock took a hit in early May after it reported mixed first-quarter results and issued a weak forecast for the current period. However, shares have jumped roughly 17% over the past month following an announcement that Shopify would be included in the Nasdaq 100 index. SHOP 1Y mountain Shopify stock over the past year. According to Bauch, Shopify can be seen as a "thematic AI story" given that its employees leverage AI internally, it offers differentiated AI-powered merchant solutions and is growing partnerships with leading AI companies such as OpenAI, Meta and Perplexity. Shopify and Meta share a longstanding partnership that allows Shopify retailers to sync their products to a catalog on Meta's Facebook and Instagram platforms, therefore growing their reach and sales opportunities. Shopify merchants can also use Meta's advertising tools to target ads and track their customers. In addition, AI-powered search engine Perplexity last year announced it will use Shopify technology for its AI-powered shopping tool called "Shop like a Pro." "While some may perceive the AI wave as a threat, we see layers of opportunity via use cases, efficiencies, and adoption," Bauch said. The analyst projected a $50 billion dollar gross merchandise value, or GMV, opportunity for agentic commerce by 2030, with roughly 30% growth annually between now and then. That, he said, is similar to the early days of e-commerce.

Doge head quit due to 'doubt' over the project
The tech entrepreneur who quit heading up Reform UK's Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) says he did so because the resignation of the party's chairman left him with "a bit of doubt" about the future of the project. After 11 months in the role, Reform UK chairman Zia Yusuf resigned on Thursday alongside Nathaniel Fried, who was said to be leading the unit. Asked by Politics South East whether the Doge audit of Kent County Council (KCC) was going the same way as Elon Musk's project in America, he said "I don't know to be honest, I'm no longer in charge of Reform's Doge." Reform councillors at KCC have said it is "business as usual" following the double resignation. Mr Fried said the outgoing chairman was "spearheading" the Doge initiative and expressed concerns that the scheme "might not turn out how I wanted it to" without him. KCC deputy leader Brian Collins said "absolutely nothing's changed" following the double departure. "We have a focus, we have a mission, that mission hasn't changed, business as usual," he told BBC South East on Friday morning. Both Mr Yusuf and Mr Fried were part of the Doge team which attended its first meeting at KCC on Monday. Reform said the meeting was "very productive" but the party admitted it did not know how long it would take for the unit to produce recommendations. The scheme, modelled on the Doge unit created by billionaire Elon Musk as part of Donald Trump's second term as US president, aims to identify and eliminate wasteful spending. Responding to claims that the "engine room" of the unit had now been lost, Mr Collins said: "The engine room is the 57 councillors that have been elected to run this council." Conservative councillor Sarah Hudson described the current situation as a "mockery". She said: "It's like a circus coming to town, and then you've got various clowns, and they've thrown their toys out of the pram at the first issue that's come along." Mr Fried said he took on the project for free because he felt the "social contract between tax payers and the British government has been a little bit broken". Asked what people in Kent would make of the resignations, just four days into the project, he said he was sure they were "disappointed". "I have great confidence in the local councillors who are working very hard at the moment, especially the head of the council," he said. "I'm sure that people are disappointed but thus is politics." A spokesperson for Reform UK said: "The work of the Reform UK Doge unit will continue. The team is larger than just one man. "Many Reform-controlled councils already have their respective Doge cabinet members, so this work was happening before and will continue after." Follow BBC Kent on Facebook, on X, and on Instagram.
