Cyclists and bikers' road safety campaign launched
A major campaign focusing on the safety of motorcyclists and cyclists is being launched in Surrey. It comes as figures reveal 470 motorbike riders and pillions, along with 351 cyclists, were killed or seriously injured on the county's roads between 2022 and 2024. The Habit for Life campaign by Surrey Roadsafe is targeting all road-users with practical education, advice and tips on how to keep those on two wheels safe. Habit for Life begins on Tuesday and is intended to coincide with the increase in road deaths and injuries during the summer months. A spokesperson said: "These figures have identified a need for greater intervention into the protection of these vulnerable road-user groups, especially around the summer months where peaks in data are evident." The campaign, which is being promoted at public events and social media, encourages people to "adopt habits which could save a life". Surrey Roadsafe is a partnership between the county's police force, county council, fire service and National Highways. It aims to reduce the number of road deaths and serious injuries, support vulnerable road users, tackle "high-risk routes" and promote safer road use. Follow BBC Surrey on Facebook, on X. Man who stalked radio DJ avoids prison
A stalker from Surrey who left a radio DJ feeling "unsafe and paranoid" by repeatedly sending her letters, emails and gifts has been spared prison. Keaton Adams, from Englefield Green, even went to the Heart radio studio in Leicester Square, London, in January this year asking to see presenter Katrina Ridley. Westminster Magistrates' Court heard on Tuesday that Adams, 51, persistently tried to contact Ms Ridley between 1 November and 20 February, claiming he was in a relationship with her. He pleaded guilty to one count of stalking involving serious alarm or distress and was given a 16-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months. In December, 60 messages, some of which were "delusional in nature", were sent in just three hours, prosecutors said. One message sent to the radio station read: "I'm going to say goodnight now baby girl…I love you always." Adams also contacted Ms Ridley on her personal email, wrote about her having "spyware" at his home and said they were going to get married in Australia. In December 2024, he sent coffee mugs to the studio with "I will always love you" printed on them. Ms Ridley said in her victim impact statement that the stalking had "a huge impact" on her life, leaving her feeling "unsafe and paranoid" and unable to use public transport. A restraining order has been put in place, banning Adams from contacting Ms Ridley or her colleagues and from visiting Leicester Square. Follow BBC Surrey on Facebook, on X. Surrey council to make £18k eco upgrades to offices
A Surrey council is washing its hands of paper towels in favour of electric hand driers for staff. Runnymede Borough Council will replace 22 hand towel dispensers at its Addlestone Civic Hall site on Station Road, Addlestone, with 18 standard driers to reduce "carbon and costs". Last year the authority spent £12,000 on paper towels but said the £18,000 spend on new driers would save money in the long run. The idea was initially raised in July 2024. Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service , Councillor Isabel Mullins described the move as a "welcome idea from staff" and added that cost savings were "very much there". The existing system was described as producing "large amounts of unrecyclable waste". However, questions have been raised over why the authority was making the changes ahead of its potential dissolution. Devolution plans, which would merge some boroughs and districts within the county to create new unitary authorities, are due to take place in 2027.
