Islamic State group was behind deadly attack on Damascus church, says Syria

The sleeper cell behind a deadly church bombing near Damascus belonged to the Islamic State group, which had plans to target a Shiite shrine in a similar attack, Syria's Interior Ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Sunday's attack on the Mar Elias church killed at least 25 people. The attack was the first of its kind in Syria in years, and comes as Damascus under de facto Islamist rule is trying to win the support of the country's minorities.
Noureddine Al-Baba told journalists a second attacker was caught Monday on his way to target a Shiite shrine in the Sayyida Zeinab suburb in Damascus, where many sites of the Islamic sect are located.
Al-Baba said security forces also thwarted a third operation, where an attacker on a motorbike was going to target a crowded gathering in the capital. He did not give further details.
We raided IS hideouts, seizing weapons and explosive caches, said Al-Baba, who said security forces were able to reach the sleeper cell's leader after interrogating the second attacker. He said the church bomber was not Syrian but did not give details.
Al-Baba said cell leader Mohammad Abdelillah al-Jumaili was an IS leader responsible for recruiting extremists from the sprawling Al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria to conduct attacks.
Tens of thousands of IS militants and their families from around the world live in Al-Hol, held by Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. The SDF condemned the attack on Sunday.
Meanwhile, funerals were held for the victims of the church bombing at the Church of the Holy Cross in Damascus. Church bells rang and women ululated as men walked through the weeping crowds carrying white coffins. The crowds cheered as the clergy honoured the victims as martyrs.
Dima Beshara, 40, who lost her cousin Emil, 38, and seven other family members in the attack said Syria has always enjoyed religious coexistence and that she was among many from all sects who celebrated the downfall of ousted leader Bashar Assad in December.
What did they do wrong? They went to the house of God to pray? Beshara said at the graveyard. Am I supposed to be scared every time I want to go and pray? She fears for her life and those of her loved ones, who regularly attend church for prayers, weddings and funerals.
We love everyone. We don't have a problem with anyone. But we hope that they love us in return, she said.

Syria: IS splinter group behind church bombing

Syria: IS splinter group behind church bombing (Image: AP) On Tuesday, the Islamic State (IS) splinter group Saraya Ansar al-Sunna (Brigade of Sunni Supporters) claimed responsibility for the deadly Sunday bombing of a Greek Orthodox Church in the Syrian capital, Damascus. The incident happened when a member of the group blew himself up at the doors of the Saint Elias Church in the Christian-Sunni Muslim neighborhood of al-Dweilaa during Sunday mass, killing 25 people and injuring another 63. The group released a social media post claiming the attack was triggered by unspecified "provocations by Christians in Damascus." In March, a dispute took place at the church when residents complained about Islamic chants being blasted from a car in front of the building. The group is said to have been behind various sectarian threats and attacks targeting Alawites, Christians, Druze and Shiite Muslims. It is also accused of involvement in March massacres that rights groups say killed as many as 1,700 mostly Alawite civilians. Islamists call government claims 'untrue, fabricated' On Monday, Syria's new government claimed that IS had been behind the attack and announced that it had "dismantled" the cell responsible for it. Authorities said they seized explosives, suicide vests, mines and ammunition during raids that resulted in six arrests and two suspects being shot dead. Syria's Interior Ministry said its investigation into the matter was ongoing and that all perpetrators would be brought to justice. Saraya Ansar al-Sunna promptly took to the messaging app Telegram to reject the government's claim, calling it, "untrue, fabricated." Saraya Ansar al-Sunna, which was formed after the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad, warned, "What is coming will not give you respite… our soldiers... are fully prepared." Sunday's attack was the first in a Christian church since the start of Syria's civil war in 2011, according to the UK-based group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has also been targeted by the group. Pope Leo XIV offers prayers for hope, healing and peace Pope Leo XIV, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, expressed his deep sorrow over the incident on Tuesday. A statement issued by the Vatican called for peace in Syria. Further, the statement said Leo was praying for those injured, as well as for the souls of those killed in the attack. Prayers were also offered to God that he provide hope and healing for the Syrian people. Though 10% of Syria's population was once Christian, that number has dropped considerably as a result of war and persecution. Those Christians who remain tend to live in mixed communities in the major cities of Damascus and Aleppo

Mozambique: IS-linked group behind mass child kidnappings

AI- Generated Image The NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Tuesday released a report claiming that Islamic State-linked militants from the regional Islamist terror group al-Shabab have kidnapped at least 120 children in Mozambique's northern Cabo Delgado province since the start of the year. HRW says al-Shabab, which is not tied to the Somali terror outfit of the same name, "has ramped up abductions of children" with most "being used for transporting looted goods, forced labour, forced marriages, and taking part in the fighting." "Al-Shabab needs to spare children from the conflict," said HRW's deputy director for Africa, adding, "Recruiting or using children under the age of 15 to participate actively in hostilities is a war crime." Mozambique struggles to contain Islamist violence in north Since 2017, the oil-rich Cabo Delgado region has been plagued by jihadist violence that has killed at least 6,000 people, displaced some 1.4 million more and forced the suspension of a giant gas exploration project by TotalEnergies. Mozambique government forces have struggled to contain the violence, relying instead on support from troops from Rwanda, South Africa, and other regional partners. Jan Egeland, secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), visited the region this month, exclaiming, "Climate shocks, increasing violence and spiralling hunger are having a terrible impact on the population." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Stoppa det här i skorna! Mina favoritbyxor var för stora redan efter 3 dagar (jag tappade hakan!) trendreporter24 Undo Egeland called the situation in northern Mozambique one of the world's neglected crises. The NRC says more than 5 million people in the region now face critical levels of hunger and more than 900,000 face emergency hunger conditions. Problems in Cabo Delgado have been overshadowed by protests following last year's presidential elections. The situation has further deteriorated after numerous tornadoes battered the area and US President Donald Trump cut off foreign aid.
