The NBA world throughout history was filled with what-if scenarios, and the biggest include Michael Jordan, the Chicago Bulls and the Houston Rockets. While most of those scenarios have been overblown and overhyped for discussion purposes, especially in today's era of social media and relentless fight for views and clicks, there are some rare occasions where one decision altered the course of NBA history.

We're talking about Jordan's first retirement. "The Black Cat" decided to temporarily hang it up in 1993 after he won his third consecutive championship with the Bulls. The decision was shocking at the time, but later, it became known that MJ was mentally on edge after the murder of his father, and he needed to get away from the game and the spotlight.
The Rockets benefited from his hiatus
Two years later, he returned and fairly quickly regained his dominance over the Association as he led the Bulls to another 3-peat from 1996 to 1998.
So, what if Mike never retired? Would the Bulls win eight or nine in a row?

A lot of folks feel that way, but not Vernon Maxwell, who was a part of the Rockets team and won back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995. He reminded MJ fans what actually happened when Jordan returned in March of 1995.
"We knew in 1994 we were going to win a championship. We started the year 23-1, or some s**t like that. We knew it was going to be a special year. It was a special team; we had a big African in the middle," Maxwell started his explanation before Matt Barnes asked him if they would've gotten those titles if Jordan had never retired.
"I don't want to hear that bullsh*t. Y'all gotta understand when he took off 45 and put back on 23, Shaq went and beat him. And they were saying, 'He wasn't in basketball shape yet.' Man, fu** that sh*t, he was in basketball shape," Vernon passionately explained.

Jordan needed more time
The Orlando Magic, with Shaquille O'Neal and Penny Hardaway, beat MJ and the Bulls in six games in the second round of the 1995 playoffs. After that, many felt he would never win another championship.
To use MJ's famous "Last Dance" quote, he took that personally. Not only did he get another 3-peat, but Jordan's Bulls set the regular season record in '96 with 72 wins. Also, most importantly, they faced the same Orlando team that knocked them out in the Eastern Conference finals.

Only this time, the Bulls swept them on the way to a title. That's the biggest sign that Mike wasn't all the way ready the year before, even though Maxwell felt otherwise. He returned in March after a two-year hiatus, trying to quickly get back to the swing of things, but that wasn't enough time.
A year later, Jordan had a full offseason and a regular season to get back on the level he was before he retired. And he did exactly that, averaging of 30.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists during the '96 Playoff run.
So, what if Jordan never retired and had to face Maxwell and the Rockets in the Finals? It's hard to say he would've lost because Jordan, every time he had a full offseason during his prime years, steamrolled the competition.
Hakeem Olajuwon, Maxwell and company were a great team, but they didn't have a "Black Cat." And he's arguably the greatest player who ever lived.

Which Nets played the best in the 2025 NBA Las Vegas Summer League?

The Brooklyn Nets are finished with the 2025 NBA Las Vegas Summer League after getting a chance to see four of the five rookies from the 2025 NBA Draft play. Brooklyn came away from the summer league with just a 1-4 record, but they were able to get a sense of what players like guard Egor Demin would look like against NBA competition prior to the 2025-26 campaign. HoopsHype put together a list of how each player on the Nets performed in Las Vegas and the results of their rating system should not shock any Nets fan who watched their team play in the summer league. For starters, Brooklyn center Drew Timme had himself quite the performance as he dropped 25.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. HoopsHype had Timme as the highest-performing players for the Nets, but in terms of the entire summer league, he ranked as the 55th-best player in the event. While Timme did not make the first-team or second-team All-Summer League, despite a solid case for him to be on either of those teams, it did not take away from the fact that Timme played well and caught the attention of some notable figures within the NBA space. Moving on, most Nets fans were watching the summer league to see how the four rookies that were able to play and HoopsHype had a rating for all of them. Forward Danny Wolf was the best-performing player from the 2025 class, followed by guard Egor Demin, guard Ben Saraf, and guard Nolan Traore. For context, Wolf ranked as the 182nd-best player in the summer league. Ultimately, the summer league is a small sample size so time will tell if any of the rookies will be worth their draft slot when they have to go against all that the league has to offer. However, Brooklyn comes away from Las Vegas knowing which rookies have room to improve and which ones will be able to contribute to winning basketball games next season.

Over the last couple of years, San Antonio Spurs young star big man Victor Wembanyama has been one of the most talked about players in the NBA. Unfortunately, last year in his second NBA season, he was forced out of action due to blood clot issues. The shade came from a place of honesty, but it was a still a very critical take. During a segment of his "520 Podcast," former star point guard Jeff Teague made it clear that he would take Paolo Banchero over Wembanyama at this point. He also went on to throw shade at the San Antonio center. "I'm taking him over Wemby, I'm taking P5 over Wemby," Teague said. "Right now, I'm taking him over Wemby, bro. The reason I say he's better than Wemby is because Wemby ain't really done nothing. We just like Wemby because he's a freak. He's a phenomenal player, but I'm just going to go with what I see." Last season with the Spurs, Wembanyama played in 46 games. He averaged 24.3 points per game to go along with 11 rebounds, 3.8 blocks, 3.7 assists, and 1.1 steals, while shooting 47.6 percent from the floor and 35.2 percent from the three-point line. To compare, Banchero appeared in 46 games as well. He averaged 25.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists and shot 45.2 percent from the floor and 32 percent from three-point range. Teague is entitled to his opinion, but it's a very debatable take. It will be interesting to see what the 21-year-old big man has in store for the 2025-26 season. Coming back from a scary health situation, he'll be looking to make up for lost time and to lead San Antonio back to the playoffs. Before long, he could make Teague completely change his opinion if he plays up to his full potential. For more on the San Antonio Spurs and general NBA news, head on over to Newsweek Sports.

Orioles closer Félix Bautista placed on injured list with right shoulder discomfort

CLEVELAND — Baltimore Orioles closer Félix Bautista, who is tied for sixth in the American League with 19 saves, was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday with right shoulder discomfort. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said the right-hander felt uncomfortable while stretching in the bullpen Wednesday during a 3-2 loss to the Cleveland Guardians. Bautista will undergo an MRI when the Orioles return home Friday. 'The (dugout) phone rang in the seventh inning last night and I thought, 'That is not good,'' Mansolino said. 'Then I heard it get slammed down and knew it wasn't good. 'Félix had started his process of getting loose and that's when it flared up.' Bautista did not pitch in the first three games of the series in Cleveland, last seeing action on Sunday at Tampa Bay when he earned his 19th save in 20 opportunities. He missed the entire 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 30-year-old Dominican has a 1-1 record and 2.60 ERA in 35 appearances, limiting opponents to a .134 batting average over 34 2/3 innings. Bautista has struck out 50 and walked 23. 'We just have to hope it's not too serious,' Mansolino said. The Orioles will use a closer-by-committee in the short term with righty setup men Seranthony Domínguez and Yennier Cano at the front of the line. 'We're going to have to bump up their roles,' Mansolino said. 'We'll figure it out.' Bautista will not enter free agency until 2028, but is eligible for arbitration following this season. The 6-foot-8, 285-pounder is in the final year of a two-year, $2 million contract. With the Orioles out of wild-card contention, they are expected to be active sellers before the July 31 trade deadline. ___ AP MLB:
