Wild elephants raid villages in Odisha's Rayagada; crops, houses destroyed
BERHAMPUR: A herd of 24 elephants which has been raiding villages in Bismakatak block of Rayagada district has left one family in complete distress. Narayan Huika (56) of Kumbharabadi village has borne the brunt of the depredation as his crop and house has fallen prey to the jumbos' ire.
On Friday night, the herd entered the village and destroyed several houses and crops. Huika suffered huge loss as the herd completely destroyed his farmland along with banana plantation.
He said that upon hearing the elephants arrive, his family left home and ran to safety.
When they returned on Saturday morning, their house was destroyed and the stored paddy, rice and pulses were consumed by the herd.
The elephants also devoured cash of Rs 80,000 kept in a millet bag.
Locals said the elephants have reportedly come from the Nagligiri forest in Kalyansinghpur. The Forest department is keeping a close watch on their movement. Train speed in the area has been reduced to ensure the elephants' safety and prevent further incidents.
Forest officials said the elephants are venturing into human habitation due to a food crisis caused by deforestation and climate change. Officials said the losses would be assessed and as per existing norms, the victims will be assisted.

Vizianagaram: The Vizianagaram One Town police busted a major job racket that duped several unemployed youth by promising jobs in the State Secretariat. Police arrested four members of the gang and recovered Rs 6 lakh from them. A total of nine individuals have been identified as accused in the case. Disclosing the details at a press conference held at One Town police station on Saturday, Vizianagaram DSP M Srinivas Rao revealed that the gang had collected Rs 53 lakh from seven victims across various districts, including Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Jangareddygudem, and Vizianagaram. Each victim paid between Rs 5 to Rs 8 lakh, hoping to secure a government job in AP Secretariat. The gang operated by creating fake appointment letters and ID cards, and even took the victims to Velagapudi Secretariat in Amaravati. The victims believed they had secured jobs until they discovered the addresses mentioned in the appointment letters were fake. Realizing they had been duped, they approached the police. The investigation began following a complaint filed by Vinod, a resident of Dharmavaram in S Kota mandal. Acting on the complaint, CI Srinivas and SI Prasanna Kumar of One Town Police traced and apprehended the culprits. The arrested individuals have been identified as Mahesh (Vizianagaram), Rubin (Jangareddygudem), John (Eluru), and Yakub. The prime accused, Sujeeth, is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital with illness. DSP said that they are searching for the other accused and will be caught soon.

Minister inaugurates police sub-division office in Dhone
Dhone: Minister for Roads & Buildings, Investments, and Infrastructure BC Janardhan Reddy inaugurated the newly constructed Police Sub-Division Office in Dhone on Saturday. The office, built at a cost of Rs.25 lakh, was formally opened in the presence of local MLA Kotla Jaya Surya Prakash Reddy and senior police officials. The inauguration ceremony witnessed the participation of key dignitaries including AP Seeds Corporation Chairman Dharmavaram Subbareddy, former MLA Kotla Sujathamma, Rayalaseema Range DIG Dr Koya Praveen, Nandyal SP Adhiraj Singh Rana, Dhone RDO Narasimhulu, and Dhone DSP Srinivasulu. Following the inauguration, Minister Janardhan Reddy held a press meet at the R&B Guest House, where he spoke alongside senior police officers. He stated, 'It is encouraging to see the new police sub-division office being established through CSR funds. The police department is one of great dedication, protecting citizens day and night, often at the cost of their personal well-being. This is truly commendable.' He emphasized that under the current NDA government, the police department has undergone revolutionary reforms, including the deployment of drones to handle public gatherings, monitor traffic, and manage law and order situations. Drones, he said, have also been effective in identifying suspects in narrow streets and remote areas. He reiterated his commitment to supporting law enforcement, noting that his contribution of Rs.5.50 lakh for the drone was part of a larger effort to improve policing infrastructure. Criticizing the previous YSRCP regime, he said, 'The police force was misused for political vendettas in the past. Today, they function independently and with integrity. The public has regained trust in the police system.' He also credited Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for his role in eliminating factionalism from the Rayalaseema region. 'It was through decisive governance and police cooperation that peace was restored. Former factionists now lead peaceful, prosperous lives thanks to those strong measures,' he said. He also said, 'after one year under the NDA coalition, the police have successfully restored peace in villages. We are proud of the work being done to ensure law and order, free from political bias.'
