Clear vision ahead for Focus Point's growth trajectory

KUALA LUMPUR: Focus Point Holdings Bhd's prospects remain positive, with both core segments poised for continued expansion, according to Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd (HLIB).
In a note, the firm said the group plans to expand its optical segment into underserved areas in East Malaysia, with three new outlets slated for Karamunsing, Bintulu, and Miri.
On the food and beverage (F&B) front, it said while sales momentum persisted, the segment slipped back into the red due to elevated operating costs and soft corporate sales in February 2025 because of Ramadan.
"Nevertheless, management remains focused on improving cost efficiencies and enhancing scalability through greater business-to-business (B2B) contribution.
"Given Focus Point's strong brand presence, expanding footprint, and operational agility, we view it as a compelling proxy for rising consumer spending," it added.
Meanwhile, HLIB noted that Focus Point's optical division delivered a solid seven per cent year-on-year growth in the first quarter of 2025 (1Q25), underpinned by strong traction in both corporate and franchise sales.
It said this growth trajectory is set to continue, driven by robust brand equity and the group's store expansion strategy.
It noted that three new outlets were added in 1Q25, bringing the total to 202.
"Management is guiding for 10 new store openings in financial year 2025, with expansion focused on the Signature, SightSavers, Concept Store, and Anggun formats.
"We also see upside from the recent Medical Device Authority ban on online sales of optical devices and contact lenses, which is expected to redirect demand to brick-and-mortar channels," it added.
Furthermore, HLIB said Focus Point continues to reinforce its leadership in the optical space through strategic marketing.
It noted that the group's 360 Advanced Primary Eye Care campaign, offering free advanced eye screenings led by licensed optometrists, further enhances brand trust and customer conversion.
HLIB added that the group's F&B sales expanded by five per cent year-on-year thanks to positive contributions from retail.
Its Komugi retail arm saw healthy growth, supported by effective marketing activities with more engagement in social media and by key opinion leader influencers.
The group also recently secured a new corporate client to supply frozen Komugi products to a grocery retail chain with 30 outlets.
Management has revealed that negotiations are ongoing with several high-potential new clients, including national coffee chains and a convenience store operator.
"If these materialise, these partnerships could meaningfully boost capacity utilisation for the CK2 facility and lift profitability in the segment.
"Management expects B2B to emerge as the primary growth driver, while retail sales should remain stable," it said.
HLIB has maintained a "buy" call on Focus Point, with an unchanged target price of RM1.10.

Gamuda's outlook positive on strong project pipeline: analysts

KUALA LUMPUR: Gamuda Bhd's outlook remains upbeat, supported by a robust project pipeline, according to analysts. Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd (HLIB) said that despite some delays in converting contracts and minor challenges in its bid for the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) systems package, Gamuda's order book is still expected to grow to between RM40 billion and RM45 billion by the end of the year. HLIB also highlighted that the company has recently been shortlisted for more projects, including New Zealand's Northland Corridor highway. "Gamuda is optimistic of prospects in Taiwan as the award timing of the RM11 billion rail extension could come earlier than expected. "Accounting for the SRL systems setback, Gamuda's high certainty pipeline remains massive at more than RM25 billion. "Further to this, we view the recent conclusion of Australian GE as reinforcing renewables' growth trajectory which bodes well for its existing pumped hydro ECIs (worth RM5 billion each)," it said. Meanwhile, Public Investment Bank Bhd (PublicInvest) noted that Gamuda's year to date project wins have reached RM15.8 billion, with its current outstanding construction orderbook estimated at RM34.6 billion. It said the jobs pipeline remains encouraging, with an additional RM15-20 billion new wins expected by end of calendar year 2025 (CY25), spanning water infrastructure, data centers (DC), renewables, and other key projects across Malaysia, Australia, and Taiwan. "On the property front, unbilled sales are now estimated at RM7.7 billion, with a RM5 billion sales target for FY25. "Regarding the data centre (DC) pipeline, Gamuda's DC partners indicated no plans to slow down or delay rollouts, and negotiations for additional DC projects are progressing well," it said. Gamuda reported a stronger quarter in the third quarter (Q3) financial year 2025 (FY25), with core net profit reaching RM246.8 million, mainly driven by improved performance in its domestic engineering & construction (E&C) division. However, PublicInvest said the cumulative nine month FY25 core net profit of RM664.5 million came in below both the firm's and consensus expectations, accounting for only 66.2 per cent and 63.8 per cent of respective full year estimates. It said the shortfall was primarily due to slower than expected earnings recognition from its overseas construction and property projects. "That said, we keep our earnings forecasts unchanged, as we expect Gamuda's performance to catch up in the final quarter, which has historically been its strongest. "We remain optimistic about its prospect, supported by encouraging project pipeline, and maintain our Outperform call on Gamuda with unchanged target price of RM5.30," it added.

Top Glove outlook remains weak as industry challenges persist: analysts

KUALA LUMPUR: Top Glove Corp Bhd's earnings outlook is likely to remain under pressure, with industry challenges expected to persist into the second half of 2025 (2H25), analysts said. RHB Research said Top Glove Corp reported third quarter (Q3) financial year 2025 (FY25) core loss of RM2.3 million, bringing 9MFY25 core loss to RM0.9 million. The firm said that results were below its expectation due to the challenging cost pass-through despite a sequential improvement in volume sold. "We expect industry headwinds to persist into 2H25 due to a higher operating cost environment and intensified competition," it said in a note. On the same note, Public Investment Bank Bhd (PublicInvest) remains cautious on Top Glove's operating landscape, weighed down by persistent pricing pressure and a sluggish demand recovery. The firm noted that the stable-to-declining trend in raw material prices is expected to further cap any upward adjustment to average selling price (ASPs). "At this juncture, earnings visibility remains weak due to tariff uncertainty and an imbalance demand-supply dynamic," it said. Meanwhile, Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd (HLIB) expects Top Glove to register a flattish quarter on quarter (QoQ) results in Q4 FY25. Looking ahead, HLIB said the sector remains clouded by heightened uncertainty around the supply- demand dynamics heading into 2026 and beyond, worsened with elevating operating costs. "Given upbeat results, we revise our FY25 from a loss of RM1.3 million to a profit of RM21.3 million. "However, we cut our FY26 to FY27 by 4 per cent/ 31 per cent following lower ASP assumptions to reflect the weakening outlook. HLIB has maintained its 'Sell' recommendation and lowered its target price to 60 sen.

Malaysia gains from supply chain shifts; Sunway to benefit: HLIB

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia continues to benefit from global supply chain diversification, which is driving sustained demand for industrial space amid rising geopolitical tensions, according to HLIB Research. In line with this, HLIB said Sunway Bhd's enlarged land bank in Rawang, Selangor, is well positioned to strengthen the group's economies of scale and deliver stronger returns. The research house noted that Sunway's recent acquisition of a 40.3-hectare parcel has increased its total land holding in Rawang to 139.6 hectares, with a combined gross development value (GDV) of RM2.7 billion. According to HLIB, the larger land bank will allow Sunway to spread common infrastructure and marketing costs across a bigger GDV, driving greater operational efficiency and improving overall return on investment. "While Sunway has prior experience with smaller-scale industrial projects in Subang and Dengkil, this represents its first full-fledged large-scale industrial park. HLIB Research added that the move allows Sunway to diversify its portfolio, reducing reliance on the residential segment and providing a more balanced, resilient revenue stream. Sunway purchased the freehold land in Kuang for RM65.1 million, with an indicative GDV of RM700 million. It will be acquired through Sunway Rawang City Bhd, a joint venture between Sunway (70 per cent) and Amal Resources (30 per cent). The transaction is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025. The land will be developed into an industrial tech park, with the first launch targeted in the first quarter of 2028, following the construction of a LATAR Expressway interchange. HLIB Research said the acquisition price implies a land cost-to-GDV ratio of 9.3 per cent. It noted that the land comprises about 26.8 hectares zoned for industrial use, 9.7 hectares zoned for agricultural use and 3.8 hectares designated for electrical pylons. "The group is expected to incur additional costs to convert the agricultural portion for industrial use, which is projected to raise the adjusted land cost-to-GDV ratio to slightly above 10 per cent, which is still within the typical 10–20 per cent range for industrial land in the Klang Valley," HLIB Research added. The firm kept its "Buy" call with an unchanged target price of RM5.90 a share. "With the group's widening exposure in the Malaysian economy, the stock provides a good proxy to the domestic economy, which is currently entering a new phase of growth," it added.
